Just in case this is your first Steam Sale remember the golden rule:
Do not buy unless it is a limited time deal (Featured deals, 12hr deals, Community choice) or the final day of the sale!
Otherwise you risk buying a game on sale only to see it get a bigger discount on a limited time deal.

    • And check Amazon, they often match our beat the US prices so you don't need a VPN.

      • +9

        And check r/GameDeals.

Rocksmith 2014 ~$6.27 USD @ Funstock Digital using code #FUNISHOT

        Sid Meier's Civilization®: Beyond Earth™ $39.99 AUD @ GameAgent

Euro Truck Simulator 2 ~$1.87 USD @ Nuuvem

Easiest way I can explain the "recommended" Steam Sale tactics is with the Steam Sale Flowchart - with an additional step:
If you get to the "Buy The Game" bit (or really don't want to wait), it's worth checking the other legit Steam key resellers such as Amazon and GreenManGaming -eg this GMG deal / code - who are sometimes even cheaper.

r/Steam nearly always has a very comprehensive post about "today's steam sale deals" - here is the Day 1 thread - with further useful links. Also check r/GameDeals as mentioned above.

Yes, most of this info has been mentioned elsewhere, eg by @indemnity, but I feel like it's worth collecting and putting near the top of the comments for MAX OZBARGAIN COMMUNITY SAVINGS POTENTIAL. Merry Christmas & happy gaming!

    • +2

Don't forget the other golden rule: purchase all games as gifts and leave them in your inventory. That way you can trade them later on if you still haven't played them or don't intend to.

      • +4

You can play games which you buy on Steam? I seem to just collect them when they're cheap and 'I'm saving sooooo much'.

  • +3

Are you ready for a miracle?

  • +5

If you are interested in purchasing MGS V - Its cheaper on Nuuvem at the moment:
    http://www.nuuvem.com.br/produto/2557-metal-gear-solid-v-gro… ~ $9 USD

However, need to use hola addon on chrome to purchase.
Also MGS: Revengence is $5.99 (Hidden sale)

    • For some reason I couldn't get purchase to go through with nuuvem so I ended up buying it from GMG for $10.72 USD with WINTER-SALE20-GROGRE.

      http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/au/en/pc/games/action/metal-…

      • Code is actually DECEMB-202014-GREENM.

    • +3

Be careful with Nuuvem now guys, due to steam's region-locking of lower-cost stores (RU/CIS, SEA and Sth America) you may end up with a game you cannot activate in Australia. I am not slagging off Nuuvem or anything here or even saying they're 100% no go now, just do your homework before buying there.

      More info: http://www.engadget.com/2014/12/17/steam-region-locking/

      • +1

I only read that yesterday. It makes you wonder whether price gouging leads to increased piracy.

        • Personally, it'll make me less likely to just take a punt on cheaper indie games - US$10-15 isn't a lot of money, but when you can pick them up from traders for US$3-5 it's a lot easier to impulse buy. And I'll probably be more inclined to ask Uncle Torrence for AAA games simply to test they ACTUALLY WORK…coz again, picking up AC Unity/The Crew for $30 I wasn't too miffed about the bugginess, but if i'd paid $80+ for utterly broken games at launch, it'd be a very different story.

Flipside I guess is I understand why it had to be done…with the Ruble in particular so volatile, games like Civ: Beyond Earth could be had for US$18, so they had to do something to stop everyone just buying out-of-region given it's less than half price (or 75% off for AU). I get the 'price gouging' argument, but in these cases it was more about setting prices that were affordable for those territories - charging US$60 for Civ in Russia just wouldn't have been realistic.

  • +3

I'd recommend using Enhanced Steam (http://www.enhancedsteam.com/) to see what the best prices are

    • I had to remove that as it kept giving me SSL errors in the client.

  • Credit to Plankton for the table.

    Credit to gamedealsmod on Reddit

It's obviously a copy paste job given that it even contains the same mistake on Rocksmith pricing.

    • -2

i don't think you can copy and paste tables, so there was some effort involved in making this, even if the info was lifted from an existing table

    • +7

Nope. That's what the price was when the sale started.

I also posted it originally without a table because I didn't know how to make one. I actually waited half an hour after the sale started because I didn't want to post a crappy listing of the deals, but no one else was posting it so I decided to just go myself and figure out how to make a table. And I ended up getting a dupe by less than a minute lol :(. It took me 44 minutes to complete the table.

      • +2

Thanks for the effort & time.

Voting for Community Choice has changed this year. Limit is one vote every 24 hours and each vote gets you a holiday trading card.

See link to Steam Sale Flowchart before making a purchase.

  • +1

My wallet is ready. And my account ready, for purchased un-played games from the last 3 years of steam sales.

  • +5

Beyond Earth - 40% off and still $54 USD?? That is still some crazy markup

    • +3

      $29.99 on Amazon

Edit: opps, I put in a link to Metal Gear ….. fixed now :)

      • that was no mistake :P

        • whoa! What happened to the picture of the weird little kid with the backpack …… don't tell me the lizard ate him :)

        • +1

@Ebany: haha updated my gravatar :P

    • +2

It's all part of the massive Australia Tax which Valve/Steam loves to impose upon us. I mean it costs them so much more to host those files on servers for Aussies to download compared to anyone else in the world, right? /sarcasm

Heaps of examples of how much we get stung in AU: https://www.steamprices.com/au/topripoffs
eg. check out COD4 — (prior to this sale) still $49.99 for Aussies, but $19.99 for Yanks… $50 for a SEVEN YEAR OLD game!?!?

Rule: Never buy at full price on Steam. Only buy when on sale or from other vendors.

      • Steam don't set the prices. Publishers do

        • +1

Actually, Steam advise the Publishers on what prices should be.

Also, as a by-note, many publishers allow Steam to handle their regional pricing as an individual allows a financial advisor to handle their Nest Egg. Basically they hand over control to Steam expecting the best results.

This is why a person should never shop through Steam itself unless they're desperate, done their research, or simply bad with money :)

        • +1

@Ebany: Steam provide advice, particularly on regional differences, but ultimately it's the publishers that determine pricepoint. If you honestly think Activision are saying "oh really steam, you reckon charge Australia US$120 for the digital deluxe edition of advanced warfare? ok you're the boss!" then you're dreaming. Their pricing is more likely to be determined by their regional retail bricks & mortar partners bleating about digital undercutting/threatening their business than by anything Steam tells them.

        • +1

@Dominus: It's more like (to use your example) Activision are saying "oh really steam, you reckon charge Australia US$120 for the digital deluxe edition of advanced warfare? ok, if you think they'll pay then do it".

And it works because people pay.

        • I'd say it's definitely the publishers seeing as there are repeat offenders such as 2K and Bethesda that consistently jack up prices. And it's not only on steam, they do it on GMG and others as well. GMG even has a special ANZ price gouge code

        • @philsaggy: GMG even says in their EULA that if they catch us Aussies buying games through a VPN ……… lets just say it wouldn't end well :)

  • +8

I would recommend you NEVER buy Steam games unless your using "Enhanced Steam" (won't link, not sure on forum policy). This simple add-on can tell you everything from historical lows to current specials, on & off the Steam site.

As an example. I followed the link for Beyond Earth (which I want badly as I love Civ games) and found it's currently on special with Amazon for only $30, and I could see immediately that it's historical low was $25.

A person has to be seriously crazy not to use this add-on, and it can be installed on Chrome or Google - obviously anyone who wants it on iExplorer should be shot.

    • +3

Been wondering if there's an add on like this. For anyone interested in using a website instead, check out "isthereanydeal.com"

      • great site

      • This add-on uses the database from that site as well, uses a heap of areas to access data.

I find it makes loading a page just a touch slower but the bonus of knowing vital information is invaluable.

    • +1

Yeah, only install for web not on client. Otherwise you get SSL errors.

      • Very true. I also recommend people bookmark the actual website it comes from as the author does "on-the-fly" updates for events (e.g. the recent X-Mas auction).

    • +2

      There's also this site: http://www.steamgamesales.com
Does the same thing without installing anything. It does get rather slow during steam sales, though.

  • Praise Gaben !!!!

Gaben what are you doing to my wallet? GABE NOOOOOOOO

  • Good to have a new copy of MS Flight Sim X after my cd died years ago!

    • Is it any good? I bought it for the kids old computer, which is an old Core2Duo E8400, 4Gb RAM and an ATI/AMD 6570 graphics card. I assume it'd run OK-ish, considering it's a fairly old game?

      • It is what it is, Its a flight sim and you spend 1/2 the time looking at dials and indicators.

That being said, that computer is more than sufficient to run FSx. Being updated for steam it has several bug fixes and optimisations that were lacking in the original, uses less ram etc.

  • +3

Looks like Amazon have Dark Souls 2 for $15 USD.

    • +2

      Praise the sun!

      • +2

If only I could be so grossly incandescent.

    • Does that work in Australia? No region lock?

      • Don't know sorry, didn't buy it yet.

      • +1

Amazon Dark Souls II works fine for Australians.
Just make sure you setup a fake US billing address.
I just activated it on Steam without any issues.

    • It's $14.79 usd on the Steam for Americans too.

Just the usual price gouging for Australia.

Same thing is happening with beyond earth.

Can buy a $20us steam gift card from eb games (cost $23au from memory) and give the code to an American friend and get them to gift the game to you, and then he owes you $5 :p

Got on there with no intention of increasing my 200+ games library. 15 mins later and I'm out ~$90. 11/10 would do again.

    • Edit: NVM. Sold out :P

    • Back in stock at GMG

      $6 USD using code DECEMB-202014-GREENM

  • anyone remember the days when steam dailies used to be mostly 75% off at least?…

    • They still are, now they just get the OzTax :)

  • lol steam…That beyond earth price is higher than when the game came out at most other key shops.

    • Not really Steams fault for the price the publisher sets on the platform.

      • I know that but steam does actively support price gauging via regional price discrimination.

  • is it just me or is that 'Enhanced Steam' plugin for Chrome not working??

    • @Reactor - It's working for me, though sometimes I have to reload the page - I assume Steam has just changed something in their code with the end of the Auction.

@General Public - Just ensure you download the up-to-date version, it will automatically detect Firefox or Chrome. Should be a slide panel under your Steam Avatar picture which loads, green light means it loaded ok, red means some (or all) of the script failed.

  • For the racing fans out there F1 2014 is on sale as well $24.99 lowest ever… http://store.steampowered.com/app/226580/
