With that big screen, it would be way more useful with Android on it. Shame. Windows Phone OS is very limited in playing back video (e.g. mkv) and accessing the flash drive.

    • Might be better in Windows 10, if this phone supports it.

      • All phones on Windows Phone 8.1 were said to get Windows 10. :P

        • I wonder what that will be like… we'll probably find out around 21/22 January.

        • @happychappy1: I am going to ignore it :P They announce it, and every moment after that til I get that update makes me feel like my phone is outdated.

          Yeah, I am hyped too.

I watched two MKVs on my Lumia 930 yesterday. Moliplayer pro works very well.

Wouldn't go back to droid from wp8 if you paid me. Have you ever owned a wp8 phone?

      • +3

yes and WP, 8 or 10 or 1millionth only has is the smooth interface to hide away their incompetencies. Behind that nice looking tiles, everything else is lacking, even the basic app like youtube. And when you dig into details, even Viber is struggling to load, yes it allows you to answer Viber call almost immediately but the screen is taking forever to load.

I completely agree. Windows phone looks good on top but all the apps seems poorly designed. Even similar apps (on iOS and Android) seems missing features. I am still to find a app that stands out.

FWIW I prefer Tubecast to YouTube app. If you want a basic cheap smart phone, I think windows phone offer the best value.

@Ronnnie: Yeah, I agree, if your needs are not too sophisticated then WP is a cheap smartphone and have to rely on browser for the rest. If you need a quick check on train timetable, or your bank account, or making immediate claim for medicare/centrelink, etc. then look elsewhere into iphone or android.

          @lgacb08:

Doesn't the here transit app cover public transport time tables? I live regional so don't know.

I got this phone during the previous deal which was slightly better than this one. I find its a great phone for the price, I mainly got it to try WP but also to see if a 6 inch phone isn't too big for me. What impresses me the most is the screen, very easy to read outside, and despite the resolution still quite sharp. Okay it isn't as good as $500 Android phones screen wise, but then its less than half the price. The only app that I use a lot that wp doesn't have is hangouts. If I didn't have a tablet though, I'd probably hate the fact the apps are lacking. The Rdio app I actually prefer to the iOS and Android version too, a lot of apps have actually just got recently updated and supposedly windows 10 is around the corner.

        • @Ronnnie:

only if your public transport system supports it, i don't know if sydney falls under this category, it works in perth but definitely does not work in melbourne :)

        • I have a Lumia 930, but had the 920 before that. I also have a Samsung S4 supplied by work. The 920 ran rings around the S4 in general performance, let alone the 930. The S4 stutters and locks up just transitioning from the home screen to the apps screen. I don't notice any major differences in apps, you can nit pick I guess.

To me WP apps look and work in a consistent way. Android apps look horrendous half the time and don't seem to work to any frame work.

There is absolutely nothing special about Android. It finds itself where it is because it was the only free touch enabled OS at the time to compete with IOS. If you like it, good for you, I think it's a dogs breakfast. When it comes to phones I want a fast device that works. And I ain't some noob, I have been working with AIX and Linux for years.

        • @sallan75:

Yeah but you are making the mistake of comparing horrible Touchwiz with Android. Lots of people make this mistake, I never realised how horrible TW was until recently. I decided to try the Samsung tab s because they were cheap during the recent 20% off eBay sale, and now I know how horrible the performance of TW is. If you compare iOS, WP against pure Android, then most people won't notice much a difference performance wise between the 3. Android has the advantage of being a more mature os (a lot of features wp haven't got or are just starting to receive) with vast array of app choices that just aren't in the wp world yet. In a lot of ways even iOS has been playing catch up to Android. Things like swype typing has been a standard in Android for years, while the others have only started to implement it, or in iOS case haven't even bothered.

        • @peter05: you can get a whole list of supported cities in the HERE TRANSIT app under the '…' in Coverage then swiping to All.

Find your city then press Show More to see all services.

Melbourne shows as Routing without schedules, while Schedule-based routing is available for Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Darwin.

No coverage is available for Hobart.

      • Yes, went from WP back to Android after dropping my lumia and the screen shattering. Kind of a good thing - I got a Chromecast and can use plex on android!

    • It's quite easy accessing the internal memory or microSD from both a PC/Mac or the phone itself. using the file managers or just Windows Explorer.

MKV support is now present in the desktop and Xbox One versions of Xbox Video so I would expect it to arrive on Windows Phone sooner rather than later. Not to mention VLC is in private beta and will be released soon enough anyway.

  • I picked one up the last time HN had a deal. The phone is a good but is too heavy and slippery sucker.

  • unfortunately we went back to the droid.. dev on windows phones are too damn restrictive.

Even the basic ability to be able to have control over SMS backups are non existent. All done in the cloud and no access to its data are available.

    • +1

cloud is good, as long as it's not iCloud and you're not a celebrity.

      • Boss asked us to print out an SMS transcript from a client for a court case. Person had a Lumia 930…. no problemo with an ANDROID and IOS.. boy oh boy, banging our heads with the windows Lumia.

        • Don't know how to print screen on a WP?

        • @wolfenator87:

are u able to print screen a whole 100+ pages transcript? please do share your expertise. up vol + power will only capture current screen on display.

  • What is the camera like on this model Nokia phone?.

  • wasn't this unit were $199 or $200 not long ago?

  • Voda gives you this for $240 on a 24 month $30 plan. Why would you buy it, just wondering …

    • I'm confused, how is locking yourself into a $700+ contract with a terrible plan over two years a good deal?

  • It's 20 per month without calls and data etc. 30 pm with the phone. That plan suits me, so the phone's 240. What have I missed?

  • Well there's better plans available at $20/m. Plenty prefer to buy a phone outright and then get a better valued prepaid plan, which usually works out cheaper over the same period.
