  • Been looking for a 'cheap' basic home theater system.

Any opinions on this? So many to choose from this seems a good priced option, Samsung TV and a S4 in the house.

Is it worth spending an extra $200 for the 7.1 version?

    • These systems are pretty basic.

imo it would be better to spend the extra on this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/176322

That will be a much better system than this Samsung one, it has a proper AV receiver, not an all in one Blu-ray/receiver combo like the Samsung, forget how many watts the Samsung says it has, it would have nowhere near the 1000 watts Samsung claim.

    • Any opinions on this?

      Lower your expectations.

Realistically, less than a grand for a 5.1 system is not going to give you decent sound.

30% THD is the going rate in most Mini Hi-Fis, all-in-one Home Theatre systems, portable radios and crappy bookshelf speakers these days.

      • It does depend on what you're used to. I got a similar system free when I got my Sammy TV few years back, and it certainly is worth the $350. Not used to audiophile gear so can't compare, just the dollar value I put on the enjoyment of having it :)

        • Agreed.

I'm not saying you can't get good sound for this price, there are real gems out there but they're had to separate from the slew of garbage; I still have a very old, Philips bookshelf set that cost around $300 that blows away stuff I've bought costing twice or three times as much.

  • save a couple extra dollars by buying through ebay, and collecting the 2% cashrewards.

    Thanks for the post OP!

  • $590 extra for the upgrade. 7.1 + vacuum tube amp + 2 hdmi ports in instead of 1.

not sure if its worth it or not

    • Additional info: I do like audio quality (NAD stereo equipment with Wharfedale speakers) but it gets zero use(kids!). This is for the kids room to improve the TV speakers for the improved Star Wars experience when we watch movies together. If it was going in my cinema room, different story!

  • I have had this system for nearly 2 years now, easy to setup and hasn't skipped a beat. Surround sound works well and makes movie watching and xbox on the home tv more enjoyable.

Without a doubt you can get better sound but imo this is good price for no fuss, wireless rear speakers setup that gives you the surround experience, if you want to spend more that's when you look into receivers etc.

  • Just ordered this myself last night to also grab the $50 Good Guys store credit.
Read good things about it and wanted something simple, entry level that is easy to setup and integrates well with the Samsung TV. Was tossing up between this and a Sony or Samsung soundbar.
