Alienware's new 13 inch gaming laptop has arrived and is currently $300 off RRP. That's 15% off.

You could get the cheapest option for $1599 but that's regular price with lower res screen (1366x768), less RAM (8GB) and regular HDD (1TB).

The top of the line comes with a 2560x1440 screen but that doesn't feel neccessary and too taxing on a GTX 860m. Right now its $2099 from $2499.

It's the first laptop by Alienware that is compatible with their Graphics Amplifier ($349) which allows use of a desktop graphics card.

I have bought one before Christmas but it got stolen…so no review from me.

Ends 1st, January, 2015.

The external GPU is a great concept, but I don't think this is going to be the one to make the masses move to this concept.

Thumbs up for a cool idea, average price even on sale (then again, it is Alienware).

  • Decent price for Alienware for once.

    • I'm not sure if "decent price" & "Alienware" should ever be used in a sentence together :)

      • Haha, well it's not $60000 for once. They still look really ugly and bulky, much rather my Asus.

Even though I will concede Alienware's stuff has gotten slightly more sensibly-priced, this is still a couple hundred dollars more than an equivalent or better-specced Horize from Logical Blue One; which you could also take with you on the go without looking conspicuously neckbeard.

Unless E-Peen or the dud3bro-g4m3r aesthetics matter to you; go with a more sensibly-priced ASUS, Gigabyte or Horize.

    • Pretty powerful rig, the GTX850M should get you Med>High settings on most games at playable frame rates (30fps~)

Just don't expect to bump everything up in every game and play away at 60fps because you'll be disappointed.

    • See the link I posted above. Some much better specced laptops for the same price and a much more reputable and renowned vendor than ShoppingExpress.

      • ended up getting metabox 17.3 4710mq 560m 250 gb ssd 1tb hdd 1478 $ from affordable laptop

        • For those specs, that's a fairly good price.

Are you sure you meant GTX 560M for the GPU though?

          Also, how much RAM?

        • @Amar89: yes its gtx 560 m ddr5 with 2 gb dedicated graphics and 8 gb ram

better specs as lenovoy50 which retails for 2100$ here

        • @Fixmyi: Interesting that they would include such an old GPU with a Haswell CPU.

You can find some gaming benchmarks of the GTX 560M here. It can game at 1920x1080, but don't expect to come close to 60FPS on High Settings with lots of AA/AF.

  • Sorry my mistake its gtx 860m
I was surprised when u said Its an old gpu then I saw the number . I guess 860m is much better then this 560m
I am new to gaming what do u recommend to install after I get the laptop
Which os? And. Some other programmes ?
    Thanks

Yeah that's what I thought. I would be worried if you got a GTX 560M in a brand-new laptop.

Mobile GPUs use deceptive naming conventions. Even though it's called the GTX 860M it doesn't really perform that closely to it's current desktop counter-part, the GTX 760.

It'll provide acceptable performance @ 1920x1080 as long as you keep the AA off and the AF to a minimum. More taxing games like Metro: Last Light it'll struggle with at any settings aside from the Lowest.

If gaming's your priority then it has to be Windows 7 (Home Premium). The amount of Mac or Linux compatible games out there is miniscule and emulating/hacking games to run on Linux is a very tiresome process. Definitely not a for newbie.

As for other software; depends what you intend to be doing with this laptop. It goes without saying though, the very first things you need to install are the latest drivers for all of your hardware (Google your laptop's model number and find the driver download page on the manufacturer's website; which would be Metabox. Obviously visit NVidia's site for your GPU drivers. Don't download drivers from any other websites aside from the manufacturers).

Some useful freeware that everyone should have:

      • K-Lite Mega Codec Pack
      • ImgBurn
      • Revo Uninstaller
      • CCleaner
      • System Ninja
      • Malware Bytes Anti-Malware
      • SUPER AntiSpyware
      • Ultimate Windows Tweaker v2.2
      • Spybot Search & Destroy
      • 7-Zip or PeaZip
      • Irfan View
      • LockHunter
      • Acronis TrueImage WD Edition
      • HijackThis
      • Recuva
      • Daemon Tools Lite
      • FileHippo Update Checker
      • AusLogics Disk Defrag
      • WinDirStat
      • Driver Fusion
      • Process Hacker
      • WinAmp
      • VidCoder or Handbrake
      • Exact Audio Copy
      • Classic Shell
      • Free File Sync
      • PeerBlock

I would also recommend using Firefox as your browser with the following essential add-ons: AdBlock Plus, AdBlock Plus Pop-up Addon, Better Privacy, Ghostery, NoScript, Self-Destructing Cookies, Classic Theme Restorer, Download Status Bar, Stop Autplay, Flashblock and Download Helper.

For benchmarking and monitoring, the following is good (again, freeware):

      • MSI Afterburner
      • AS SSD Benchmark
      • Crystal Disk Mark
      • Crystal Disk Info
      • Core Temp
      • CPU-Z
      • GPU-Z
      • HWMonitor
      • Speccy
      • SpeedFan
      • BelArc Advisor
      • Sandra Lite
      • Prime95
      • Passmark Performance Test
      • NovaBench
      • Furmark
      • 3DMark
      • PCMark

Last but not least, before you do anything drastic or fiddle with anything that looks serious on your laptop, that you're not sure of; Google it.

  • Oh boy what a list . Thanks for your help I need to google first to see what some of the above software do.
For drivers they say I will get dvd with all required drivers .
What are your favourite games ? I only played on PS3 and now moving to pc
I have played uncharted series , just cause2 gta5 and some cod
Are there any open world titles like uncharted

    • Probably unrelated to uncharted and all (I've never owned PS3 or 4), but Skyrim is good on PC, even better with mods.

    • For drivers they say I will get dvd with all required drivers .

That's no good. They could be outdated. You never install drivers from bundled disk media.

Just go to this link, click on the link under "Model", and find your laptop. The model number is probably on the bottom of the laptop itself.

I need to google first to see what some of the above software do.

Most of it is fairly straightforward and harmless and also well-supported, so it's unlikely to cause you any issues. I've been using that list of stuff for years now.

Ultimate Windows Tweaker and Classic Shell are very powerful tools for customising Windows behaviour, appearance and functionality; they're definitely more power user tools, but as long as you create a System Restore point before using them and make sure not to touch any options you're not familiar with, you'll be fine.

You'll probably also find K-Lite Mega Codec Pack a bit confusing because there's a million installation options, but generally leaving things at default should work pretty well.

Also, be careful what registry entries you delete with CCleaner and what files you delete with SystemNinja.

What are your favourite games ?

Here's some good lists for you:
      http://games.on.net/2014/01/pc-gaming-calendar-2014-75-great…
      www.gamespot.com/forums/pc-mac-discussion-1000004/big-pc-exc…

Older stuff you should definitely play on the PC would be:
Mass Effect series, Dead Space series, Batman Arkham series, FarCry 2 and 3, Alan Wake, Hitman Absolution, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Payday 2, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Max Payne 3, L.A. Noire, Black Mesa Source, BioShock, Dishonored, and Sins of a Solar Empire

Lastly, for people new to PCs, I can't recommend TweakGuides Windows 7 Tweaking Companion enough (the free version). It's 400 pages of useful advice on how to optimise, customise and maintain your PC's performance and stability in the long-term and it's very easy-to-understand and the writer gives plenty of step-by-step instructions on how to do everything.
