  • It almost appears too cheap. I wonder if they've had many returns on these?

    • No. They always have one or two cheap receivers post Boxing Day.

    • they had the htp072 last year for $199, which i was hoping to be on sale for this year's boxing day. they didnt put it on sale, but i opted for this anyway.

  • Picked one of these units up to replace a Yamaha receiver that failed. Very impressed with it so far.

I price matched at HN and picked up something else to take the total to $300 and qualify for a $30 AMEX statement credit. HN are also selling an entry level Yamaha amp which they will do for $247 but it lacked USB input and did not have the auto-calibration MIC.

The calibration really makes a big difference, it accurately detected the distance between speakers and watching my first movie with it last night I was impressed with the clarity. I don't doubt my previous Yamaha amp could have done the exact same job, it's just easier to get this one going.

I do miss the 6ch stereo option from the Yamaha but I'm sure it's only a button press away on the Pioneer.

    • how do you do the calibration? is it in the manual?

      • I have the previous model

If it is still the same method,

You need to connect the RCA port to the yellow port of your TV (AV input)
then Use the Blue Setup button on your remote then navigate the ugly looking menu on the tv

      • It comes with an auto calibration MIC, you just plug it in to the amp and run the setup. It gauges the distance between speakers as well as some other settings and adjusts itself accordingly.

    • Can't find it from HN web site

      • Neither could I, they have them stacked high in store though.

  • Tempting just to use as a DAC for headphones as my TV only has optical out.

  • Runout? US Site showing RRP of USD $249.99
    http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/AV-Receivers/Pio…

    • so the way the $AU is slipping, $247 is a very good price. Tempting. At 80watts per channel it is slightly lacking in power to play my "doof doof"

    • Even when the dollar was par, the US/AU price differences for receivers was an anomaly.

  • Good price for a good entry level unit. I paid a bit more for the VSX529 that is on sale as well, to replace the VSX1019 in the second room. Remember the Pioneer On Screen Display (OSD) can't be accessed via HDMI on this unit, has to be via RCA analog video cable to use the OSD and run MCACC etc.

    • -3

can it access the VDO or the MCG or have to go via SCG and WACCA

      • so much nope!

  • From what I can see this is really just the 2015 model of the VSX-523 which has been selling for $210 - $225 recently. So $247 is an good price for the 'new' model, although I believe it's exactly the same as the VSX-523.

A great entry level unit though and well worth the price. But that RRP seems stupidly inflated.

    • 2014 u mean?

  • If only it had more Watts.

    • Yeah 120w per channel is what I like so that you never actually have to max out the volume.

    • Depends on speaker efficiency, 80W could well be more than you can use.

      Actually, is it this one?
      http://www.pioneer.com.au/au/products/62/98/405/VSX-524-K/sp…
That claims 130W into 6ohm - there's a trap there if you're hooking up some 8ohm speakers and might be a reason why 80W is not enough for you - though even 40W into efficient speakers should deafen you in a house setting.

      • Not 524K, 524 shall be the earlier model.

        • It is the 524-K, the K just means black.

    • My speakers are 120W maximum each and my current amp is 500W.

  • Does this have a speaker pack?

  • do they have 1 or 2 years warranty?

  • Anyone know how good this would be with a record player?

  • Picked up the last one from strathpine, even though the JB site said there wasn't any there.
Sticker price still showed $529 but scanned at the sale price of $247.
Used a $50 voucher from Coke Rewards too so Merry Christmas to me :-)

  • Was this amp packaged with a speaker set recently for around the similar price? Quite sure I saw it on here?

    • That was the VSX 523 deal, just search Pioneer.

  • The link now goes through to an error page. Hoping the sale might still be on instore.
