Apply for a David Jones American Express Credit Card in Store by 18th Oct 2009 Get 20,000 Points

20

Be sure to spend outside DJ within 7 days of receiving the card to get 20,000 Bonus Points which can be redeemed for $150 worth of DJ gift cards.

You can also get a supplementary card fee waived for the first year.

Earn 1.5 Points per $ spent outside DJ

Earn 2 Points per $ spent inside DJ
No points capping or expiry

Receive 1.5 Gift Points for every dollar you spend at millions of places here and around the world, and 2 Gift Points for every dollar you spend shopping instore at David Jones.

Down side is the — $99 card fee, but you can cash in the bonus 20 000 points and get a $150 in gift cards thus making $51 profit.

DJ gift cards expire after 2 years. However I think you can use the remaining credit to buy another gift card so you dont lose any money before it expires thus getting another 2 years extended.

Another down side is you can only cash in points for DJ gift cards or Travel. Not very fexible as i dont spent alot at DJ but i think ill make the wife happy when she gets the supplementary card and the DJ gift cards in the mail.

I also think DJ price match, so i plan to do that and use my gift card to buy a new Laptop on boxing day.

The sales person told me that its 7 days of activating the card you need to make a purchase outside David Jones to get the 20,000 Bonus Points which can be redeemed for $150 worth of DJ gift cards.

However i dont believe them as it states on the flyer its within 7 days of receiving the card. However I will be going away on holidays soon so i might not get the card on time so it will be a waste of time for me. Does anyone know about this for sure? I think ill call amex first thing on Monday to make sure.

I think DJ staff get the annual fee waived but not share holders? Has anyone else been able to sucessfully get the annaul fee waived on one of these cards?

  • However i dont believe them as it states on the flyer its within 7 days of receiving the card.

    That sounds wrong.
It will be from the activation date as they have know way of knowing when you actually get the card.

If you want the card sooner ask them to express post it to you. As long as the application has not gone too far this can added
I dont know if they will do it on the DJ card however American express have happily sent me cards using express post before.

  • If you apply in-store, they'll give you a temporary card straight away. I think from that point it's activated. But I believe the 7 days starts from when you get the actual card - as no other store is going to accept a piece of cardboard! It was actually quite scary how fast they processed it and gave me an instant 15k-limit credit card.

By the way I just cancelled my DJs card (before end of first year) - didn't need a card with annual fee. They offered to reduce it to $50 but I said no thanks. The free gift wrapping at Christmas was handy though.

Might get the missus to sign up this time.

    • are they charging the annual fee upfront or at the end of 1 year?

  • From my view, AMEX should be free of charge not just for the first year, but always.

The reason: Most of them do not accept it - specially no bargain site takes AMEX. With Amex there is an annual card fee and then there is a membership fee for collecting points.

    • Depends on the AMEX card. I have a Gold AMEX Credit Card that I don't pay any annual fee for - ever - including a supplemental card for my wife and enrolment in their full awards program (I have it linked to QFF).

      • Hi mate, which amex card is this? QFF points and no annual fee sounds good.

        • It would be one which is not publicly available or a promotion which ran for a certain time.

        • It's just called American Express® Gold Credit Card. I have this card too but mine costs money to entrol in the reward program. I'm only keeping it because I can have up to 4 supplmentary cards for free which is really handy. e.g. I've given one card to my uncle in China since most online stores outside of China do not accept Chinese credit cards.

edit: yes, it was a promotioin. I recieved a letter in the mail a few years back (not sure how they got my details) from them saying I was eligible. I thought it was a good deal so I applied.

  • Most people will not be able to get a card.

AMEX has very strict Credit Rating criteria.

90% of people fail & will not get the card.

    Don't rely on this promotion…

    • 90% of people fail & will not get the card.

      90%?

      I dont think so

      • 90% is probably an exageration, but they do have a strict criteria especially with the current credit crunch. I applied for one about 10 years ago when I was working a part-time job and got turned down. Recently I applied for the DJ Amex card with my gf, she didn't qualify but I did. We both recieved a $50 gift card (i.e. $100 in total) on the spot for spending just for applying. Later when I recieved my card, I got another $100 upon activation. The $99 annual fee is pretty steep but I think it's worth it. So far I must have redeemed close to 10x $100 gift cards. We bought heaps of stuff during the last end of financial year sale with them.

    • I dont think so, 2 of my friends on 457 visa was unable to get any local cards except Amex (and then citibank).

  • —> Coolsteps

I was looking at notebooks and equipment in David Jones, Doncaster. (It's in Victoria and while a new store, is not the city one).

At the time (maybe 9 months ago), they did not have ASUS netbooks. What they did feature prominently, were Sony notebooks in the $2000+ range.

I also looked for microSD cards. They did not have any at the time, but tried to offer me 6 GB of SD card … ie a pack of a 4 GB and a 2 GB card. (It was that or an arrangement for 12 GB of SD card)

So, the thing is, although they said they price match, it looked like they were stocking items you cannot get in other stores … which meant they could have a price match policy without having to ever, actually match prices.

So … you might want to check what you want in a notebook and what prices you can get it for … then phone in to see if they have it

In the end I gave the DJ vouchers to someone else as a present and she was very happy :) (She used them to buy cosmetics during a recent promotion at DJ)

    • thanks fountit i think that is so true. all their items seem to be priced high. dont worry i know my pc's and prices ill make sure too get the best deal or ill simply buy elsewhere. like yourself ill probably end up giving the gift cards to the wife to use.

  • Too much of a hassle to save 100 bucks buying something you may need while possibly could get somewhere else cheaper. I hate the fact that theyhave all these time restrictions, not for me thanks for the poster though.
