Server works great on Windows but still a bit flaky on a Linux

Works great on my Nexus. Would much rather install from Playstore than Amazon

      • Agree apart from the issue if table space is low you can store apps direct to cloud holdings with Amazon but I have yet to find a way to do this play store. Make space, download, uninstal, reinstall my apps all.

        • Not sure what you mean - You can re-install apps from play store and to backup data you can use a Google account or one of the many backup apps

        • @LoungeLizard:
          Ah thanks . Ll'

I will take on board your comments, I will look into backup apps, if I can store data on them I will then have free space for downloads, Kindle books, and so on. Only to use as needed.

Reinstalling from 'my apps' in Google play, store is fine apart from those free offer apps that make you pay if reinstaled.

          @Kevan2:

An investment in Titanium Backup or MyBackup Pro is definitely worthwhile. I use the former and it's simple to backup your apps and data, and then backup the Titanium Backup folder to your PC. Then you can uninstall any apps you don't need knowing that you can reinstall to the state that they were in when you backed up (ie. same data).

        • @dazweeja: thanks will do the work.

        • @Kevan2:

I think you can backup one app at a time with the free version of Titanium. MyBackup Pro has been free at Amazon a couple of times but I don't have any personal experience with that app.

  • Can't sign in. Not sure why

  • I'm confused, what's the difference between this one and XBMC? I have XBMC at home…will this enhance the experience due to ability access my media from my mobile phone? (which will consumes lots of data watching it from train?)

Do you need to configure router port forward for this to be accessible from your smartphone?

    • I just installed it. Nice dashboard, it seems slicker than xbmc/kodi

not sure about data, smooth HD stream to my phone over wifi -edit- the phone app allows you to select bitrate for mobile data/wifi/chromecast so you can limit your data use in app

It selected a port on setup, default was 8096 for me

XBMC / Kodi is a standalone playback program, which will adjust the resolution of the source video to fit whatever device XBMC / Kodi is running on (eg: 1080p MKV source file played on a 720p tv - XBMC will downsize the video) - but it will play ONLY on the device that is running XBMC / Kodi.

Media Browser (and Plex) require a server running their server version of the program and it will then SERVE (stream) video to any connected client (ie: you might be running the client on a mobile phone, on an android TV device, a tablet etc.). The server will re-encode the source video on the fly, specific to the client on the playback device. eg: if the mobile phone only has a 480p capable resolution, the server will re-encode the video (and if necessary, drop the bit rate so it can stream over a wireless connection) for the client software on the mobile phone.

likewise if the android TV device can output at 1080p and the source video is say 720p, the server will re-encode and upscale the video to 1080 (but you can't add detail to the existing source file of course, only take it away).

    I will stick with xbmc

its opensource & supports livetv from mythtv

from the brief read it appears Mediabrowser is also open source - but yes, I would need to run it on another machine as my NAS cannot run it. At least with XBMC / Kodi I can have a 'dumb' NAS with all my media on it, then play it on the TV (which is the main, almost sole device which I use to watch / listen to my media anyways).

Mediabrowser supports DVB-T tuners and can stream live TV too.

      • Do you happen to know if Mediabrowser will offload the transcoding to the GPU?

I really like Plex, but my Microserver struggles big time transcoding HD tv / movies, whereas Kodi / XBMX can handle it as the graphics card does all that hard work, but can't serve the tv/movies to my Rasp pi or Chromecast without a lot of stutter.

If this could be the best of both worlds I will be mighty interested.

I always love the sound of these types of apps but then I inevitably get to the point of realising i watch about 0.1% of anything I own (legitimately or otherwise) more than once so in the end all these things do is provide a huge amount of clutter for me to maintain wade through maintain and occassionally I would get to show off to someone new as they scrolled through thousands of titles and realised I must never leave the house if I actually watch all of this. :p

Once I got past the "collector" (hoarder?) stage I realised that I was also paying electricity and spending time on maintaining infrastructure to store this (personally to me) useless data. It provided an unexpected sense of being psychologically unburdened when I turned it off and stopped curating my collection also. Like paying rental on a storage unit then storing items you would've thrown in the trash otherwise.

Still have a count of never on the situation of wanting to watch something again and not being able to find it again.

    • Depends how much storage (over life) and electricity costs (per month) outweigh a ~$10.15 netflix/amazon prime/etc subscription (+ ~$2/mth for DNS/VPN).

Although one's content selection is higher with the former. The former also scales nicely with larger households who are avid media consumers.

    • Thanks for taking the time to share

  • How does this compare to Plex? I rarely use the mobile apps except for music. The missus uses it to watch TV shows on Nexus 7. But the killer app for Plex has been the Samsung Smart TV app.

    • id also like to know. ive already paid the $80 for plex lifetime and find it pretty much meets all my needs, and more.. but always willing to consider what else is there. anyone used both?

    • At a base level, they are very similar. Plex's interface is a bit smoother and slightly better resolved, but Media Browser works just as good as Plex and also contains features that Plex lag on releasing. E.g. Media Browser has had parental controls for a long time, whilst Plex has only just released this feature after years of requests, and then only to paid subscribers.

I have used both extensively on PC, mobile and Roku. I've still got both installed, but I will be uninstalling Plex soon.

      • Thanks for that. I'll test it out once they release the Samsung Smart TV app. Until then Plex is doing the job fine.

  • This will have to be pretty mind blowing to replace Plex. Having said that, far and away my biggest issue with Plex is jumping to certain times using the phone as a remote. It is an absolute nightmare trying to seek small increments with the slider, especially when you think you have the right time, you go to lift your finger and it moves ever so slightly, jumping forward a few minutes. Might not sound like much, but when you're watching sport that you don't know the result of, 2 minutes can be one hell of a spoiler.

    • I'm guessing you mean on the mobile app? I know on the Samsung app you can punch in hours/minutes/seconds and go where you like.

  • Hi, I'm new to the smart TV's. Can this app be installed to the tv and play rmvb files?
