These look like they have that lip on the bottom to cut into your hand when carrying full, instead of the better rounded edge, and those wheels that break instantly and don't roll when it's full (the only time you'd need them)… like every other cheapo plastic tub.

The starmaid are the best because:

      • completely clear, you can see exactly what's in which tub
      • rounded bottom edge, so you can carry it, even when full of heavy stuff
      • seals fairly tight, protecting the contents
      • no crappy easy-break wheels
      • pretty strong and long-lasting.

I have over 50 of them. I own a smaller house because I don't need a big one anymore, I can store my stuff in the garage and still find it when I need it. My house isn't cluttered, and I save about 200 grand over a bigger house. That's the real bargain.

      • I carry them by…. drum-roll… the handles, the top lip. What it's designed for ;)

I appreciate your points, but it's splitting hairs IMO. The bunnings ones are so similar, on points that don't really matter (or become a genuine problem).

We have a 12sq house, and yeah, 'professional' storage styles makes an insane difference. A house that small scares people… but it's how you manage it. We work in M3 not M3 ;)

100L storage box with lid $12 at masters box hill south (Vic)
    Maybe other stores too

      • yep, that's it.
        Thanks for that.
Not as good looking as transparent ones, but very strong and stackable

    • +2

Yep, got a bunch of these. They aren't going to break and the handles won't snap when you pick them up. They also stack really well.

  • +3

I put homebrew cans in these and they can definitely hold a lot of weight. Very well-constructed.

It makes you wonder how much profit is in plastic countainers.

These Starmaid containers, as has been mentioned, are well made. They would be the clearest plastic, making it easier to see through. My experience has been with the smaller 25? litre containers, which are made of the same material.

The plastic has some flexibility to it, therefore it is not brittle. The lids clip on, and the units are stackable.

I dont think there are any wheels on these (aren't any on the size I have), though this probably isnt a big issue, as I dont think I have ever used the ones on the other 'el cheapo' containers I have (and it means they wont roll of the shelf).

So, probably one of the best containers on the market. Have had a few cheaper ones break, and I suspect a number of the cheaper ones are made from inferior material.

    • +1

There's two types actually. One with no wheels - one with - and wheels mean there's four "squares" inside the container - so the bottom inside is not flat. I hate them for that reason, and they're the only ones my local WW gets in stock.

    • I don't know how you got from all that to "one of the best containers on the market" lel.

      • +3

Probably from the collective wisdom of a lot of people who have bought a variety of containers over the years and have communicated their thoughts about those containers in forums like these.

        • +2

Only my collective wisdom, and perhaps a non objective comment. Have had quite a few different branded ones over the years though. The Huro branded ones (Big W) have been equally good, but are different sized containers.

    • i think removing the wheels got you the warranty! haha
wheels and handles are easy to break!

    • My understanding is, that they use oil products/byproducts to make this kinda stuff. Price/quality adjusts somewhat accordingly.

Just thought I'd put that out there.

    • Cost of material to make them should be less than $1/kg.

Noticed the plastic on some of mine is very clear, while others have cloudier plastic. Having them side by side, the former are quite a bit nicer than the latter. Not sure which ones are newer so can't say if they've improved or cheapened them.

Check carefully for cracked/broken bits when buying in store - even though the plastic on these is less brittle than the cheapies, they still seem to get damaged prior to sale.

Main issue I've had over time is the locking handles breaking. There's a weak spot where the handles connect to the lid, and the handle becomes prone to snapping in that corner.

Not sure if it is the photography, but the ones on this web site appear to be slightly cloudy:

      https://www.masters.com.au/product/900036133/starmaid-storem…

And if there has been a change in manufacturing, perhaps it was due to a changes after going into administration:

That is a crying shame about the receivership. The quality of their products was second to none. I put my money where my mouth is and I have a house full of their products. I think one of the reasons for the premium price is their use of virgin food-grade plastic in their products, rather than use recycled and weaker plastic in their moulding process. The only other Australian company I know of which has a similar quality is Fischer plastics. Their range of storage boxes etc. were commonly available at KMart and Bunnings, but have slowly been replaced by cheaper Chinese knockoffs. Unfortunately they are cloudier and slightly more brittle. I fear price is winning out over quality.

        • Check out Icon Plastics Product in Bunnings. They got the same quality as Starmaid. So far as I know, they are doing just great.

      • Uh oh… Maybe time for me to stock up on the good ones before they become just another cheap plastic tub that breaks under pressure. Shame there's such a priority on price over quality.

Bought the last intact ones in coburg vic. Now to store all my eneloops in it.

    • last intact ones

There were two left where I went today, and the good one was stuck fast inside the non-intact one. After doing an Incredible Hulk demo for the other shoppers in the aisle, I managed to divorce the two. Was offered, and accepted a rain check on these, which lasts for 12 months. Depends what happens with the external administration as to whether Woolworth gets more stock and I can actually use the rain check.

      • Wow, you're lucky to get a rain check. Bought online, went to pickup last night to be told no stock and they'd refund my money in 3 days. No notification of stock issues until I went to pick it up and they couldn't find my order. Great service Woolworths.

  • They weren't priced at my woollies but scanned at the cheaper price. Thanks OP

  • How do these tubs compare against the wheeled Supercheap Auto ones - which I find pretty good. Better or worse ?

  • Is this at all Woolies at the moment? I am in NSW, Fairy Meadow 2519

  • Deal expired!

  • I ordered 10 on line with free delivery from my local store for this morning.

Delivery man right on time, however I refused delivery as they were 'Home Collection' brand, not Starmaid.
Delivery man was good about it, advised me to phone Customer Service.

Did so, spoke to CSM Paul, who could not have been more helpful. Offered me immediate refund or redelivery of correct items.
I requested correct items, he then advised he would call my local store, and phone back within 30 minutes.

Within 30 minutes he phoned back, advising the store would have new stock tonight, and would I like delivery tomorrow morning.

    • Where are you located? I ordered on Monday and no delivery yesterday, this morning I got an email saying out of stock and my order refunded.

    • +1

Well tomorrow morning has come and gone, and a differnt Woolworths delivery man, has just attempted to deliver the same 10, WRONG, 'Home Collection' brand tubs that they tried to deliver yesterday.

      Sigh.

I again refused to accept delivery, and again rang customer service.

This time i spoke to CSR Christine, who actually seemed a bit out of her depth, but pleasant with it.
Firstly she wanted to give me a refund, but I respectfully declined saying I would rather have the Starmade tubs, even if it took a few days, no worries.

We had to go off to the supervisor for that request. Some tine later, Christine came back with her supervisors suggestion of I take the refund, and go down myself to the store and see what i could get.

      Sigh.

After a bit more back and forwards, I suggested to Christine that at her next CS team meeting she may like to raise the issue that suggesting to an 'On-line' shopping customer, that it would be a great idea if you cancelled the on line order and went down to the shop, kind of defeats the concept of on line shopping, and that it would be reasonable to have my problem dealt with without me having to go to the store…..

So in reply to that I was asked" so you want the refund?"

      Sigh.

No I replied I want the goods I ordered, however be that as it may, can I have a Raincheck?

Silence on the other end. To move things along I then uttered, you do have a Raincheck policy. Off again to the supervisor we went. Some delay.

In the end I am to get a refund (3 days) and a 'coupon' by email, or so I am told………..

      • Umm, bad luck…

I got 12 of these price beat by Master, paid online about 5 days ago but still "Order Being Processed"…
