SimCity 2000 Spec. Edition - Free on Origin

970

Was updating my games and noticed this was free. If anyone missed out on the previous deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/173993 it seems to have popped up again. I don't know what's different from this edition to the normal edition and not too sure how long it will last for.

        Fund. Fund. Issue bonds.

    Unfortunately, I think that playing this on a modern PC would look rubbish. The resolution is fixed, meaning that it would be very low res blown up to your full 1080p desktop screen - making it extremely blocky/pixelated. I suppose you could play in a window, but then it would be tiny.

    • Yeah, it's a pity that they didn't release the Windows port.
      This runs under DOSBOX, and you have no choice but to play it at its default resolution windowed mode (dont even attempt this at 4k resolution!)

      • So how do I play this on Windows 8?
        I tried to load it, but it keeps on crashing?

          @MrZ:

          What do you mean? Windows 8 is great, and I'm a long time Windows XP, 7 user.

        • -7

          @GregRust: Why do millions of people hate it then? Why have Windows 8 sales been no where near the levels of previous version of Windows (Vista excluded). Why is Windows 8 market share so average after over 2 years on the market?

        • +2

          @MrZ: The UI decisions are the primary reasons for Windows 8 lacking popularity. Underneath it all, Windows 8 is a clean and fast OS. I don't use it myself, but I've set it for people so that they barely can tell they're not using Windows 7.

          None of this helps the original poster with their compatibility problems though.

          @MrZ:

          Win 8.1 + Classic shell = superior

        • @zeggie: How do I do this? I think my computer is on its last legs, but I hate the Win 8 UI.

        • @RJK:

          If you have to go to all that effort to make Windows 8 look like Windows 7… why not just… you know… use Windows 7? facepalm

        • +4

          @MrZ:

          Because an OS is more than just an interface.

        • +2

          @MrZ:

          All that effort to install a single application?

        • +2

          @MrZ: Well any installation of Windows is an investment of time. You may be surprised to learn that installing Windows 8.1 on a newer machine is actually a lot less effort than putting Windows 7. This is because installing Windows 7 usually involves tracking down and installing drivers manually, which may not be made available for that specific model, whereas Windows 8.1 will detect most of the drivers. Tweaking Windows 8.1 to bypass Metro is relatively trivial.

          The other advantage of Windows 8.1 that will be obvious to most users is the fact that it's noticeably faster. This has been confirmed in many independent benchmarks.

          I believe you're letting your understandable hatred for Metro UI get in the way of a balanced view, and your desire for others to conform to your views get in the way of basic netiquette.

        lucky I'm rocking a 1280x1024 17" incher…

    • I would suggest playing the Mac port in an emulator if you really want a SC2K fix. It will run at the full res of your monitor.

    Last time I played this, I was fired (in the game) :(

      my dad seen me play and said: "I hope to god in future you don't become a city planner".
      So I joined the LNP party.

    I paid $100 for this game in 1999 from harvey normans.

    i think i got ripped off.

    Should have waited 16 years

    • +4

      You paid $100 for a 5-year-old game?! I think you might be thinking of SimCity 3000, which was released in early 1999.

        Did they try to sell you a monster hdmi cable with that?

        • +2

          Monster were only manufacturing VGA cables at that time.

    I recommend checking https://www.origin.com/en-au/store/free-games/on-the-house once a week or month etc. This offer has been up for a while and just from checking that page my Origin accoutn is looking pretty good with BF3, PvZ, Peggle, Wing Commander 3, Dragon Age: ORigin, Crusader: No Remorse, and now SimCity. idk what I missed before these deals but worthwhile keeping an eye on!

    • Thank you. For a moment I thought I was going mad. This has been free for ages. I redeemed it on the 10th of Dec.
