as much as I enjoy using this phone when it was still current, for $99 these days you could arguably get a better phone (http://www.dicksmith.com.au/prepaid-mobile-phones/optus-noki…)
the 3GS is stuck on ios 5 or 6 so you cant really say the app ecosytem will be better than a windows phone as most of them you wont be able to download or run properly

I will answer myself: NO !
These are perfect phones to use when overseas. If you get robbed or stolen - no worries!
there are MANY smartphones < $99 and more than perfect than the above!

Yup, as above this phone was great for it's day. I had it till about April this year and it was beginning to get real slow, even with a clean install.
While I can't comment technically, it felt that with latter iOS updates, the phone slowly became obsolete in the sense it would take years just to get in the phone book.
But I do miss my ole' 3GS.
