Bare drives were US$260 on release so worth keeping an eye on prices for these new drives.

    • Amazon link says US$299…delivery will be around AUS$30.

Where did you see the US$260 for the Bare Drives please Gav?
…or were you just looking at the articles in engadget, gizmodo, PC Gamer, etc

      http://www.extremetech.com/computing/195543-seagates-first-s…

      • Yup, Engadget, etc. mid-December. I assume they were quoting RRP.

    • Only 3 months ago, I paid $250 AUD for TB Toshibas :(

    it's a seagate though…….i don't really trust them anymore.

When is WD releasing a 8TB drive?

I have the opposition opinion - who is right?

      • +2

People who are focused on ensuring their redundancy/backup scheme is solid and have little time for brand quibbles until more rigorous studies than Backblaze and Hardware.fr appear.

The only failed hard drive I've ever had was a Seagate.

        • last few days I have 2 WD died on me…..

    • WD (HGST) do sell 8TB filled with helium for US$749.95 at Amazon :) very light lol
Is on special too. Better get them now !!! Says down from US$1,099.99:

Seen them for $999 somewhere…Go for it :) heheheheheehe

  • Showing up as AU$411.75 delivered for me: http://i.imgur.com/WxxA8OX.png

    • Probably ~$10 cheaper if you pay in USD with a 28 Degrees credit card.

  • Might be worth holding out for a decent price local stock. These are the SMR Drives I believe.
I'm seriously keen at $40per TB max but cheaper would be nicer.

Might be worth holding out for a decent price local stock

Given that both my Seagate external 4TB drives failed in <3 years, having a local return/refund option would be worth it.

Personally I'd recommend price matching an Australia source at Officeworks (assuming they get them in) as I got refunds on both of my failed Seagate drives, even after 2-3 years.

      • Was it the drive or usb to sata interface? I have had 12 external interfaces fail over the last 10 years, but all drives were OK.

        • Since they were still under warranty, I didn't bother to pull them apart to find out.

The last drive to go was giving me issues for 6+ months where I had to completely power down to get it to be recognised at boot. If I just did a reboot, or disconnected then reconnected the USB cable, Windows couldn't access the drive.

But thankfully I was just using them for backup drives and didn't lose and info.

  • Whoah the actual single disk 8's are available to buy for consumers now? Helium or regular?

    • I believe these are the special hard disks that are slower than normal to write to. They are designed for archiving, not frequent use like normal drives.

Still wouldn't buy Seagate drives these days. They seems to be having too many problems.

  • Are these drives esata internally? Ie. Can be broken out to use in a desktop machine?
