  • Lots of info re the deal, but what are they like as a VPN? Do they genuinely not keep records? Reliable, Fast?

    • I read somewhere that they keep records for up to 10 days. It has been a reliable service for me with decent speeds to whichever server I have connected to. Haven't had any trouble with them since I started using it about six months ago.

  • I've used these guys for the past few years. The VPN stuff works well & I haven't had any outages (unlike vpn.sh). But streaming video over it wasn't very good (where as vpn.sh has been very good).

Their DNS/ibDNS service works a treat. I've asked them to add some sites & they did, which was handy.

Their App is easy to setup & use. I mostly use them for public wifi & book depository price checking.

Their customer service is very good (quick to reply & follow up if you haven't replied to them).

As for logs, I never believe any of these guys who say they don't keep logs.
Rule of thumb is just assume that
    - They keep logs,
    - Their local law enforcement & security organisation (NSA, MI5, ASIO, KGB, etc) have access to these.
    - They can decrypt your traffic (i.e. don't use it for banking)

You're probably safe to use to say avoid the proposed ISP meta data collection or downloading games which are banned in oz, but I wouldn't be uploading support videos to the ISIS youtube channel, or hacking Sony using them & thinking your safe.

  • +1

Been using this company for a few years too. They have been awesome, with android and ios support too.
I've tended to buy on the black friday sales. Had an issue with billing, where when I renewed it started a 2nd product, rather than extend the existing subscription. Went to live chat and they fixed it right away.

    In regards to logs …
"We do not spy on our users and we don’t monitor their Internet usage. We do not keep logs with our users’ activity. We will however record and keep the following data for 7 days:

Time, date and location VPN connection was made.
    Duration of the VPN connection.
    Bandwidth used during the connection.
This information enables ibVPN to enforce our Terms of Service, spam, crimes using the service, etc. If there is a violation we will use these trace logs to determine which account is in violation and we will terminate the service and/or take further action."

The company is based in Romania too, like a lot of VPNs, so even what logs that are kept cannot be subpoenaed by any legal body or agency as far as I'm aware. Unlike a US based VPN, for example, which would have to hand over logs and info at the request of any subpoena from US or other country that the US has agreements with.

    • But their main server is host in the US, so the US govt has access

      • +1

thats just a server. still no logs though. and the company is not US owned, and headquarters not there either.

and if thats still a concern, dont connect to the US server. no P2P servers there anyway.

        • You don't know if they do/don't have logs anywhere. It doesnt matter if its a US company or not. If they host anything with a company which has any business in the US they're required to handover anything the US authorities demand, even if that info isnt hosted on US soil.

That US server has your a/c details, IP address, login, password, etc, you download ibvpn clients from that server (or the apple/android store).

The service is good for many things, but its certainly not as secure as they (or the rest of the industry) claims.

        • @supabrudda: If the country that the VPN company exists in has nothing of interest to the US< then the US will not be n a position to demand anything, sure they can ask but not demand. Its not like the US is going to invade them, or nuke over this stuff.

The Ukraine for example relies on the US for income now that the Space Shuttle is finished with. Ukraine is an integral part of the US space program and very susceptible at a government level to US pressure. However Romania is not in that same position. As a rule Romania is ignored by the US economically and is willing to tell the US to #$*K itself if it tries to push its laws on them. There are many countries the US has no interest in, and Romania being one of them also just happens to have some of the planets best internet infrastructure, an NBN if you like. This makes it ideal for truly untraceable VPNs.

There exists the ability to run them without logs, truly untraceable, and make a good income. Therefore there is motivation to employ exactly that practice in a country more than willing to stand on its sovereignty and act as a buffer between them and any US demands or requests. It is entirely feasible there exists proper, VPNs.

        • Agreed

ibVPN is owned by Amplusnet, a Romanian based business. They aren't answerable to any other country.

Romania is subject to the EU wide Data Retention Directive, but the laws have yet to be effectively implemented.

Confirmed with iBVPN, the only data that is kept for 7 days, time, date and location VPN connection was made, duration of the VPN connection, bandwidth used during the connection. And quoted from support "As for the other opinions, they are just that…opinions and conspiracy theories"

  • if what u said is true, then whats the point of any VPN?
