Yeah I'm actually going to buy this game, there aren't many Wii games I would buy that aren't Zelda but this is one of them.

    • Definitely worth playing if you haven't. It has a very different feel to other first person shooters. There is a strong emphasis on scanning in the first one which is thankfully toned down in the sequels. I don't think it quite reaches the calibre of the Zelda franchise (especially twilight princess) but this is easily over 100 hours of (mostly quality) atmospheric content. The soundtracks are particularly memorable.

  • Be wary that this game is just under 8GB is space, If you have a basic model you'll need extra storage space to even purchase this I think. Incredibly good deal regardless, this is part of a 3 game discount which has already cycled through DKCR and SMG2. MPT being amazing as physical copies can go up above $100 as it's essentially 3 games in 1.

      Yep.

Just to expand on this for anyone who is unsure:

You cannot save/install games to an SD card & Nintendo recommends an AC powered hard drive because some portable hard drives draw more current than the USB 2.0 ports can provide.

Additionally, any hard drive you use will be formatted (all the data deleted and the drive prepared for use with your Wii U) so make sure that it isn't a drive that you have important stuff on.

      • And for some reason they do not recommend USB flash drives…

        • Can I use a Flash/Thumb drive as an external storage device?

          • Because these devices have a limited number of rewrites and are not suited to long-term storage of important game data, we do not recommend the use of Flash/thumb drives as an external storage device solution. For best results, we recommend using a hard drive with its own power supply that connects to the Wii U via the USB port on the console.

          • Commercial Flash memory has a limit on the number of times you can write over it and we don't recommend flash memory devices for long-term storage of important save data.

They work just fine (I use a 64GB one). Most come with a 2-5 year warranty so I'm not too concerned about it failing anytime soon. I haven't heard any reports of people running into issues with a USB flash drive on the Wii U.

        • +1

Although they work fine, they just aren't advised due to the obvious write/rewrite nature and it's limitations. It's still a viable option , many just prefer to be safe, especially if you're going all digital(not advised with aussie pricing).

        • +1

@Juddy: Realistically, if what you are storing is a game then the drive probably wouldn't be getting smashed in terms of writes anyway. Most of the games files will be static and won't change once they are on the drive. It's not like the disk the Wii version was distributed on was getting re-written.

I'd have thought speed would have been a bigger concern, with some cheaper USB drives not exactly being quick which would prompt them to make a general recommendation of not using them.

        • @Yuri Lowell:

Many do work, but not all of them. Had to play around with a few combinations of thumb drives and sd card/usb reader combos before I got one to work.

Just a heads up to those wanting to try.

        • @Smigit:

You're probably right. Someone just seemed unsure why Nintendo didn't recommend flash drives; I thought I'd fill them in.

Maybe it is constant read access which is an issue.

        • @Juddy: Yeah your answer was 100% correct, I just find Nintendo's reasoning regarding writes interesting.

        • @natsumezoku: Ah I wasn't aware of that. I'm using a Sandisk Ultra Fit USB 3.0 64GB on mine.

        • @Yuri Lowell:

I haven't heard any reports of people running into issues with a USB flash drive on the Wii U.

Check the GAF thread. There are plenty of people who used USB sticks which croaked. You can certainly do it, but it's highly inadvisable and you're basically playing on a ticking time bomb, especially if you're appropriating an old flash drive you had lying around when the read/write maxes out.

        • @Strand0410: Link? Hard drives aren't 100% reliable either, no storage format is.

        • +1

@Yuri Lowell: Google it, I stumbled across it while looking for solutions to Bayonetta 2 last year. No storage format is ironclad, but HDDs are engineered to last years of almost daily use so when they die, it's a mechanical failure. Flash drives are not, and have an explicit number of rewrites when they're sent from the factory. You can use a USB stick, but it's not advised by Nintendo who aren't in the business of selling HDDs.

    • Hi everyone,

I have the basic model and thought I will only buy disc games but eshop deals like this are so good makes me re-think.

I have a question though, if I download games from eshop into a hard disk/flash drive but sometime later hard disk/flash drive dies and data is not recoverable, can I re-download my games from eshop? or I loose my games forever and will have to buy again?

      will appreciate your answers!

      • +1

Yes, you can download again, but only to the same Wii U console.
If your console breaks, you have to send it to Nintendo Australia to verify your purchases. Hopefully, they improve this process.

  • does it work with the gamepad or do i need wiimote and nunchuk?

    • It'll only work with the Wii remote + nunchuk

      • To elaborate, the games only work with remote/nunchuck as the trilogy is a remake of the first two titles with a new control scheme and only allow for use with the wiimote combo due to it being for the Wii.

        • +2

Oh, thank you for the heads up. I'll pass then, so glad I didn't download it last night as I f****** hate the Wiimote and Nunchuck. It's the reason my Wii died a horrible lonely death in the roof space.

        • I don't find it that hard. You prefer the GameCube control scheme?

        • @Jesmond: I just hate Wiimote nunchuck gaming in general. Have yet to enjoy a single game using it and I really hope they remake the Wii Zelda game that used this so I can one day play that.

        • @Where's_That_Cake: Super Mario Galaxy? ;)

Currently playing through the first one on my Wii and it's very enjoyable.

        • @TLZ: Bought it on original Wii and its in storage, never liked the control scheme again.

        • @Where's_That_Cake:

It really is the best combination for Metroid Prime Trilogy :-) Big improvement over using the gamecube controller, not just my opinion but many reviewers also.
You have to give it a chance, i was the same as you but after sticking with it if it's an option for the game i prefer using this combo over regular controller.

        • @Jesmond: I know people pour so much hate on the Gamecube controller, but truth be told it actually works really well- certainly better than a PS3\PS4 and almost as good the the 360 controller.

        • @rodripa: bah humbug, the PS4 controller is the best I've used. I'd rate the WiiU Pro next in line personally.

  • would love to get this… cheapest place to get a wiimote plus these days that actually work with the Wii U? Can anyone please guide me? Thanks

    • You can get two preowned (non motion+) ones at EB Games - https://www.ebgames.com.au/wii-139030-Wii-Remote-Controller-…

      They also have 2x nunchucks for $8 - https://www.ebgames.com.au/wii-139028-Wii-Nunchuk-Controller…

    • KMart pretty cheap for non motion + also. This is where i got from.

      • would these work with the Wii U? I've seen comments that some 3rd part remotes do not sync in game?

        • Non motion does not mean its non Nintendo.

They are official nintendo Controllers, just not the new Motion+ ones (which are around $100 with nunchuck!)

Both Wii and Wii U controllers work with both Wii and Wii U compatibility wise. It's just the new gamepads etc that wont work with Wii.

I've used both the standard and Motion+ on my Wii U but can't justify 3 or 4 x the cost.

        • +1

          You need a sensor bar

  • +2

nice price, too bad i never really got into these games.

    i want thousand year door.

    • I was fighting the final boss on MP 2 and my memory card (GC days) failed. Never got into the series after this.

  • any chance they will update to allow to work on gamepad only?
They would sell so many more games for gamepad only

    • Gamepad only

No, but Nintendo did say that any games that had classic controller compatibility will be fully compatible using only the gamepad to play!

  • Worth buying for a casual gamer? The only action games I've ever liked were Bioshock and Bayonetta. I've got Metroid M but haven't played that yet and only got it because it was cheap.

    • +2

They're more like First Person Adventures and MP1 and 2 fall into the "best games ever made" category too. Personally I cannot recommend them enough. On a side note do yourself a favour and put Other M in the bin, playing it before will only taint your view of the series and playing it after has been known to induce severe nerd rage thought to be a symptom of withdrawal for older Metroids.

      • Haha I guess I'll buy the trilogy then. Other M was only $5 anyway so I'll just leave it in the backlog for now.

      • +1

OH LOOK, IT'S RIDLEY, I'M SEVERELY TERRIFIED OF HIM DESPITE BEATING HIM 4 TIMES BY THIS POINT IN THE METROID CHRONOLOGY, SAVE ME MALE CHARACTERS

Team Ninja, y u do dis.

        severe nerd rage

  • Each of these was $60-$100 when they came out from memory so this is a great deal. Pretty bold moving turning one of their beloved side-strollers into an epic 3D adventure game, but I think Nintnedo ended up with the best possible outcome.

    • Did you mean a real pirate?

        • +3

"Yeah, but "pirating" of obsolete software is not illegal."

Yes it is. Whether the game is one month old or five years and hard to find is irrelevant. You may be able to morally justify it, but you certainly don't have legal rights to do what you want with the title. Also you could buy the game today and play it on a current gen Wii U if you wished given the Wii U is backwards compatible. The Wii is also readily available, so difficulties in running the game if you locate it isn't even a great excuse.

        • +2

          Lol, "selfish of them", nice.

        • Selfish of them to not make an HD remake

How generous of Sony to make The Last Of Us HD on PS4 one year after its release on ps3. Obviously this is because Sony are SO GENEROUS and such a fan-oriented company, and no way have the money in mind when they made this decision.

        • +3

Yeah, but "pirating" of obsolete software is not illegal. and Nintendo added NOTHING to the game.

          Wow. This is just ignorance.

It's 100% illegal because it's a title that Nintendo is still selling and generating revenue from (if this deal didn't make it obvious). Even if they weren't selling it in the eshop, it's a legal grey area. The only legit scenario is if you own a physical copy of the game and you ripped the backup from that. If you own the game but downloaded the ISO from the internet, it's not 'your' copy and is thus illegal again.

        • +1

@Strand0410: Whereas I wouldn't mind pirating Xenoblade coz that shit is 300 bucks for a physical copy! Still, I cannot! I must complete the collection!

        • @FrankMcFuzz: I'm playing devil's advocate here. I've emulated GCN ISOs on my PC via Dolphin, games I own physical copies of but wanted to replay in full HD and widescreen. It's up to individuals to draw their own line, and that's my one. It's just ridiculous to see misinformation like "it's not illegal because it's uh, obsolete? and um… Nintendo didn't add anything, so there!" It captures the stereotypically entitled gamer perfectly.

        • So ignorant and so sure of yourself at the same time. Good on you, Sage. The only intellectual property you can use without permission is that which is in the public domain. I can assure you NONE of Nintendo's IP is.

  • For those who have the GCN titles(like myself), and looking to see the changes here they are

For $13 for 3 games, you can't really go wrong.

  • Pretty sure the nintendo eshop screwed up just now and gave me MTP for free.

    • Yep its official, I got metroid trilogy for free from the eshop!! I had just clicked the button to go to payment screen (had not even entered credit card info yet) when the eshop suddenly hanged, then crashed after a few seconds. Next thing I know is I have downloaded Metroid trilogy onto Wii U and definitely did not put a payment through (as is evidenced by my online banking). So I'm playing Metroid at the moment for free, and umm Legally? I didn't steal it, nintendo handed it to me haha!

  • Metroid Prime is my favourite video game of all time. Such unique gameplay. It was made in 2002 on the gamecube and the graphics still look good. For anybody considering buying, it is worth the price for the first game alone!

  • If I didn't already own the first 3 separately (and hadn't finished them 100% multiple times) I would totally get this. It's so much game for the amount you're paying and I can't recommend it enough. They're some of my favourite games of all time.

  • Got it….great price…..wanted to try but not for over $100 from ebay hehe

  • I also bought Mario galaxy 2 back when special, but decided to skip donkey dong country because I heard that tropical freeze is better anyway. Did I make the right choice? Another Q, should I also buy the original Mario galaxy even if I have the second?

    • Donkey Kong Country Returns was a great game but there was something about it I don't personally like. Playing co-op was a nightmare, made it so much more difficult. Tropical Freeze I haven't played yet but in terms of the difficulty at least they added an "easy mode" with extra hearts and whatnot.

As for buying the original Mario Galaxy, for sure! It's more of the same but that's by no means a bad thing, both games are great fun.
