The new version of the cheap Linux board that everybody loves!
Apparently due to the new SOC, it has approx 6X the processing power of the older B+ model. Since the USB and Ethernet bus is one shared processor, NAS performance wouldn't be that much better than the previous RPIs. The form factor is the same as the B+ so it will fit in the cases and accessories for it.

It seems to still be a fair upgrade over the previous model

Also, apparently a version of windows 10 will be released for the PI2 since it uses the newer ARM7 Architecture.

http://dev.windows.com/en-us/featured/raspberrypi2support

Having a more powerful PSU is even more highly recommended now, with a minimum power output of 10W (5V,2A).

Features:

  • Quad Core CPU,
  • 1GB RAM,
  • 900MHz Board Clock Speed,
  • 40 GPIO Pins,
  • 4 x USB Ports,
  • 4 Pole Stereo Output,
  • HDMI Port,
  • 10/100 Ethernet,
  • Micro SD Card Slot

EDIT: For free shipping ($45+), you could add a power adaptor

Or a case
You can also get this case for $4.99 as opposed to the $10 case above.
Mod: 3/2 12:40PM updated price in title from $38 to $41.80 (to include GST)

Still available on eBay from Element14 for $55 or best offer with free postage: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251817612551

  • Hmm…
You can now provide up to 1.2 Amp to the USB ports – enabling you to connect more power hungry USB devices directly to the Raspberry PI. (This feature requires a 2Amp micro USB Power Supply)

Oh and Windows 10 IOT is "Internet of Things" and apparently has no desktop GUI…

    • no desktop GUI…

      whaaat? :(

Cross-device compatibility will be there thanks to Microsoft's "Universal App" strategy, based on the Windows Runtime platform (once known as Metro. Although the desktop might not be available, the Windows build will support visual applications. “It is a headed device, HDMI primarily at the moment but then LCD panels in due course.”

        eg. You won't have a desktop, but you'll have a GUI. :P

  • Anyone wants to sell their old raspberry-pi?

  • OoS but I ordered anyway. I'm not in a hurry.

  • RS Components have it available for a few dollars more here

    Looks like they've stocked up!

    http://au.element14.com/raspberry-pi/raspberrypi-2-modb-1gb/…

    1051 left as of now.

  • 1056 back in stock at Element14. Decreasing by the minute.

  • I have managed to purchase one before they were out of stock. Looking forward to getting my hands on it and building a case. I am particularly interested in the OSMC (Open Source Media Centre) https://osmc.tv/about/, as the Raspbmc (XBMC for Raspberry PI is no longer supporting the updated board.

Check out the following blog for further details:

  • 991 left. ordered.

  • Would http://www.howtogeek.com/139433/how-to-turn-a-raspberry-pi-i… work?

I want to use it as a NAS Back up.

Here is a link to the same case for half the price :) Might want to update the first post.

    • that version has deadly chemicals in it apparently..

      • haha I noticed that as well but it's the same part number and spec sheet so who knows?!

      • Says who? It is exactly the same case! If that one has deadly chemicals in it, so does the other.

        • the $10 one says it contains no SVHC, the $5 one doesn't. manufacturer part number is the same, but order code is different, who knows.

        • +1

@mr kindface: It's on special. They append 0x to item code for specials. It's also advertised in the last quarter issue of Connect.

Bought one, even though I don't even know what it is and what is for!
    Thanks op!!!

      • +1

So long as It's cheap, we will buy it and work out what it does later, Lol.

  • Down to 700

  • In theory, I should still get my first shipment today. Can't wait to test OpenELEC 5.0.1 on it. Wondering how well it'll run Kodi compared to the B+. Also want to see whether it fits all my B+ cases. Hurry! lol

    • I wouldn't expect a big jump in performance just yet, probably have to wait a couple of releases till they make full use of the new cpu and extra ram.

      • +1

Wouldn't surprise me if they had done some work already. The Pi 2 has its own image, different from the Pi image. I guess I'll see when it gets here. Still looking forward to testing it all out. I just love new toys. lol

        • +1

Slight update here. There definitely is some performance improvement when navigating menues in Kodi. Rebuilt an equivalent library (of reasonable size) not disabling fanart, and menu navigation and browsing the library is still marginally quicker (unless I'm imagining things). As for playback, it does not appear to make any difference. I had some files showing artifacts due to the software-decoding process running into CPU limitations and the same files still have the same issues. You'd think six times the power should make some difference, but currently it doesn't.

    • Well, strike that getting it today. Just checked Toll tracking and my package still shows at Sydney. Even if it's in transit to QLD, given the current time I don't see how I'd still be getting it today. :/

  • +1

    One bought.
That's SIX I have now!, one B, original 256 Meg,
    one original B 512 Meg
    two A+'s
    one B+ and now this

probably should do something with them, they're so cheap!

    it's the thought that counts?

    • Same here,
      Bought one now
      Have 2 B 512 for the home.
      5 B 512mb for family and friends.
1 B+ when it came out but not currently using
1 A+ + Camera module, was thinking of making a remote camera but haven't finished.

Not sure whether to replace them all or not with RPi 2….

  • Just brought one. At this stage, I do not know what I will use it for. But, I hope to learn to do something with it.

  • Whats the difference between the same day dispatch and Auspost? I left it as default (same day dispatch) as there are only 11 left.

    • I think 'same day' would mean they should package and label and post the item that day - like you or I would.
Australia Post is probably a bulk submission where they collate a lot of orders and submit them to Aus Post via a bulk form. This might be done every day or so depending on the number of order shipped this way.

  • OUT OF STOCK
241 will be available for delivery on 02/03/2015

  • Very interesting piece of hardware indeed. I still prefer my hefty desktop and sometimes my laptop run 24/7 do not mind the power bill that much. Viva solar panels in QLD.

  • Just ordered one although not sure what I am going to use it for ! Thanks for the deal.

  • +1

    WOW.. Received it already :)

    • What time yesterday did you order? I ordered mine at 8am yesterday and its still sitting at 'processing'.

    • what courier did they use? gotta make sure I'm home so it doesn't get stuck at some weird depot if I miss it

      • Mine came Toll Overnight.

There is tracking information against your order on the Element14 site.

        • ah found it, thanks

  • Thanks! Got a Pi and a new tip for my iron for $48.54!

  • wow, already received it this morning

  • Decided to place order even though they have no stock.

Just received order confirmation with expected delivery date "W/C 16/03/2015"

Looks like I will be waiting nearly 6 weeks :-(

    • Order status now changed to complete and shipped!

They also split the order and sent the case and power yesterday. It arrived today. I'm surprised they didn't hold on to those items for a day so that the whole lot could be sent together.

I'm impressed with the service from element14.

  • Yay. Got mine just now in Brisbane.
Ordered about 10 pm on Monday, processed and shipped 2 pm Tuesday, in my hands by lunch time Wednesday. And I must say that all my Element14 orders have been this quick.

  • Pretty good service - ordered it yesterday and got it today in Perth!

  • +1

Very good service from Element14. Ordered pi 2, case ($4.99 black) and power supply (5V 2A) yesterday at 8 PM. Received in Sydney at 3 PM today. Did not buy IR receiver, though it would have been very useful.
Slight wriggle to get into the case. Unit so light that HDMI cable is lifting it up. Connected wired keyboard, mouse through a hub, wired internet and HDMI cable.
Downloaded and installed NOOB. So far good. Planning to program GPIO with python to do some hobby work.
Using a class 10 microSD (30MB). Many thanks to ozbargain for all the helpful postings.

    • Where is the black case for $4.99..Link.

  • Ordered last night around 10:00pm and still showed 129 in stock but got email today saying out of stock and won't ship until 23/02/15 :-(

  • According to Element14's "Check stock and lead times" droplist:

1,500 will be available for delivery on 14/02/2015
240 will be available for delivery on 02/03/2015
1,413 will be available for delivery on 08/02/2015
1,200 will be available for delivery on 15/02/2015

Not sure why they put it in that order. Reordered:

1,413 will be available for delivery on 08/02/2015
1,500 will be available for delivery on 14/02/2015
1,200 will be available for delivery on 15/02/2015
240 will be available for delivery on 02/03/2015

From past experience these figures will change frequently. Check them regularly if you care.

  • can't figure out element14's fulfilment process.

ordered 3 units at 11:00am yesterday, order still showing processing.

ordered 1 unit + 1 case at 11:28am yesterday, order was shipped out by Toll Overnight at 2pm but hasn't yet arrived.

so the earlier order hasn't shipped, but the later order has. and both orders were in by noon for same-day delivery.

  • I ordered mine yesterday @2PM. Still waiting in Newcastle. Obviously Element14 are very busy, and some allocations go astray. I wonder how many people are employed by them.

    • Still waiting. Toll Priority, obviously don't give priority to Element 14.

      • Just received. I also had Toll call me earlier to apologise. ;-)

  • Played around with NOOBS image from http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/
Raspbian boots and works OK. I had trouble with other OS from NOOBS operating system install manager.
Then installed openelec 5.0.1 from http://openelec.tv/get-openelec
I am happy with my quick testing of openelec 5.0.1. Meets my simple requirements.

    • Actually, there are a few things I couldn't get to work on my Pi 2 running OpenELEC 5.0.1 that work absolutely fine on my Pi B+ with 5.0.1 and seemingly the same setup. One example being IR over GPIO. Has anyone got this working?

      • Dunno.. Will test when mine shows up! I'm just using an IR LED receiver wired direct to the GPIO - same for you?

        • Yes, same here. Let me know how you go.

        • @daerka: Missed the courier!! :(

          Damn their fast service! lol

        • interested in how you go … if you get it working can you let me know what IR you bought and where from?

        • +1

@Elijha: Any IR receiver on a 38KHz frequency that can take 3.3V should work on both, the Pi and the Pi 2. I've been using a TSOP34838 on my Pi B+ without any issues, and it should equally work on the Pi 2. There's probably something still amiss in the OE image for the Pi 2. Just have to wait for the next update, I'd say.

        • @daerka: Pretty sure I'm using a 5v one, with inline resistor without issue. It was a spare.. lol

Had to program the obscure remote manually, but it's an easy process.

        • @ryang: 5V one should still work, hooked up to GPIO 3.3V, though it's probably better to use a properly rated one. If you got a spare 5V should be fine, if you need to buy one, make sure it's rated for 3.3V.

        • +3

          @daerka: OK, after much screwing around - finally got it all working on the RPi2! Couple of issues;
          - Default install of OpenELEC 5.0.1 starts with wireless disabled !! ANNOYING!
          - By default (ANNOYING AGAIN!!) RPi LIRC is disabled… Add dtoverlay=lirc-rpi to your config.txt (http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=217308&pid=1915101)
          — You will probably need to grab the new overlays as well - or Milhouses's builds (and his overlays)

        • @ryang: Yeah, was going to post that. Got the official build running, just had to add the overlay into the config and put the overlay file into the according directory. Thanks though.

        • @ryang: OpenELEC 5.0.2 is now out, looks like they might have fixed the wireless and IR issues:

projects/RPi2/patches: add patch to build 'RTL8812AU' driver with kernel 3.18 and enable this driver for RPi2 builds
          lirc: fixed ir blasting

But good find on the workarounds too :)

  • Placed an order this morning. Board wasn't in stock but placed the order anyways. Just got an email saying it was on it's way, due tomorrow… Woohoo..

  • just receive it , vic. too fast. just ordered when still have 80 left

  • It is $38 now… I can't get the free shipping with the $4 case as it stays at $43 AUD

    • It's been $38, the entire time - Ex GST price. Element14 are business direct suppliers.

For free shipping, add a PSU.

  • received mine today. going to set it up with ubuntu and hook my weather station up to it and have it serve my app. hopefully weewx will work on it… I had the 512mb B version which always crashed. might have been the power supply or just a faulty board.

  • I have earlier RPi boards and they didn't handle USB insert while it was on. If you inserted a USB device while the unit was on it couldn't handle the sudden power draw and cause the unit to instantly reboot, often corrupting the SD card contents. Do these later RPi boards have the same issue?

    • Sounds like a power supply is to me.. I can unplug and plug anything with it on, without any issues.

They are sensitive though, especially the earlier models and firmwares.

      • I was very aware of using decent power source … its a known issue with the first 256 and 512 Mb models. Do not handle the sudden power requirement when USB inserted. Someone had made a mod where you solder a capacitor on.

        • My rPi B has been running for nearly 12 months 24/7. I use a power supply from a router 5V/2A.

  • +1

    Plenty of stock (> 1000) again. :)

    • Singapore stock, but still good. I really do have enough now for the moment, though. lol

  • Got one via Elements.. Ended up being $53 incl shipping. Hardly the $38US they advertise.

I had a Model B one but hopefully this will be faster. Had more USB ports as well.

    • $38USD = $48.50AUD.. So it's pretty bloody close with shipping!

    • +2

You know you could have gotten this cheaper, right? Adding $7 worth of items (excl. GST) would have brought that under $50 delivered (incl. GST).

As a side note, the Pi is advertised as a US$35 computer (not including shipping), which would be closer to AUD 45 given our terrible exchange rate at the moment. In contrast to just about everything else, the Raspberry Pi 2 is actually cheapest in Australia!! :)

  • Ordered one, showing delivery estimate of 2/3, hopefully that will come in a bit.

  • Ordered mine on Tuesday evening, still no sign of it. There's a tracking number on the website, but doesn't work when I try it in Toll's system. I was expecting to receive it yesterday :(

    • Same here. Mine was coming via Toll Priority. If you goto your order on the Element14 site. My Account/Order Status & tracking/ Then look at the Tracking Number / Date Shipped section, click on the Consignment number eg: APPT1234567, & it should take you to the correct site.

  • +1

    For Emulation users :- Retropie

  • Got mine today.

  • Got mine from element14 today. It's great and much more responsive than the last gen. Highly recommended!

  • Great. I am going to use this for FreePBX.

  • Apparently, this deal is expired now. Seems they finally did an exchange rate adjustment.

    $41 now excluding GST.

    • Bugger! It was actually a sale - mentioned on their homepage that it was a special release pricing..

They must've been flying off the shelf though - 1,000's would come into stock, then disappear in a couple of hours!

      • +2

Yeah, wished I'd at least have bought another five at $36.60 + GST now. This might actually be better value now if you need more SD cards.

        • Hmm.. Nice find! Image appears to be a Sandisk Ultra, so not to shabby.

        • @ryang: Pretty sure it's a Sandisk Ultra, as that's the only card they have listed with Noobs for the RPi 2 (or rather the only Noobs card they're awaiting stock). Other plus is that it's $45, so it's free shipping. I think it's just an oversight on their part, though, will likely see a price increase soon too.

  • +1

Neowin has a report of Raspberry Pi 2 freezing and rebooting when a Xenon flash is used.

    Has anyone had this issue?

A camera flash will make the Raspberry Pi 2 freeze and reboot

    http://www.neowin.net/news/a-camera-flash-will-make-the-rasp…

    • That doesn't sound very good, but I don't really have the equipment to replicate. :/

    • +1

Meh, there are lots of pictures of the RPi2 already out there, so don't take a picture of your rig with a flash. Or do it when not booted up. Or put some tape over the power supply chip.

      • Mmm, I would expect the broadband EMI from a leaky flash to cause problems like that, rather than the bright light.

    • +2

      I confirmed on my unit.

Easily fixed — cover up U16 or put it in a case :)
