The new version of the cheap Linux board that everybody loves!
Apparently due to the new SOC, it has approx 6X the processing power of the older B+ model. Since the USB and Ethernet bus is one shared processor, NAS performance wouldn't be that much better than the previous RPIs. The form factor is the same as the B+ so it will fit in the cases and accessories for it.

It seems to still be a fair upgrade over the previous model

Also, apparently a version of windows 10 will be released for the PI2 since it uses the newer ARM7 Architecture.

http://dev.windows.com/en-us/featured/raspberrypi2support

Having a more powerful PSU is even more highly recommended now, with a minimum power output of 10W (5V,2A).

Features:

  • Quad Core CPU,
  • 1GB RAM,
  • 900MHz Board Clock Speed,
  • 40 GPIO Pins,
  • 4 x USB Ports,
  • 4 Pole Stereo Output,
  • HDMI Port,
  • 10/100 Ethernet,
  • Micro SD Card Slot

EDIT: For free shipping ($45+), you could add a power adaptor

Or a case
You can also get this case for $4.99 as opposed to the $10 case above.
Mod: 3/2 12:40PM updated price in title from $38 to $41.80 (to include GST)

      • Download to large and fast SDHC/microSD and rsync over SSH to real NAS over Gigabit Ethernet.

After all, Pi is much more power efficient than my HP MicroServer… ;-D

However, the ODROID-C1's quad core Cortex-A5 1.5GHz may be a concern as Pi 2's Cortex-A7 looks more advanced (although clocked at 900MHz only).

        • Not really… Cortex-A7

Up to 20% more single thread performance compared to Cortex-A5 at similar energy efficiency

          http://www.arm.com/products/processors/cortex-a/

So, it would be like a 1.07 Ghz A-5 equivalent.

        • @josephchi: Thanks for pointing this out. Will do some more research on A5 VS A7 diff. Most likely I'll sacrifice Gigabit Network support for more powerful CPU ;-D

  • Can somebody add links for ideal power supply etc

  • It think the product is actually the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B not the B+. Since I'm not that techy, I'm holding out on getting one, until I see some demos with the Windows 10 platform.

    • Yeah, good move. Wait till you see the demo else it is just a hype.

  • +1

Couldn't help myself and just ordered one. Next day delivery when ordered before 12PM. To get over the $45 for free shipping, I added this PSU: http://au.element14.com/pro-power/psu-raspberry-pi-2a-5v/psu…

uhh… they are for different things.
Not sure if there's a hack to turn Chromecast into a linux machine yet.

      • +1

Please explain in layman's term what this thing can do. And why they should shut up and take my money.

        • This is pretty much a desktop.
Is this answer easy enough to understand?

I think chromecast acts more like a conduit to get content onto your TV from your source (PC, smartphone and tablet)

        • Chromecast is more comparable to an AppleTV. It's a device for streaming media to a TV. The Pis are essentially low powered, but full functional computers. I tend to use them for tasks that would be overkill for a full computer, like acting as acting as a backup device, network monitoring, firewall, router etc. Their expansion facilities mean that you can build your own devices off of them.. The skies the limit. :)

        • -1

Same thing a WDTV can do….+.

  • Cheap, better than Chromecast

  • +2

This is probably more of a forum question but what do people here use the raspberry Pi for (apart from HTPC)? Is it more of a tool for learning using the GPIO ports?

    • One is a secure Torrentbox (similar to this but set to sync automatically with our home media server) and an always-on device to send Wake-on-LAN packets.

Older one is sometimes used for random *nix projects so I can power down the hungrier desktop.

    • +3

monitor my electricity consumption, solar generation, database, proxy server.

    • +2

Well personally I buy the new models when they come out, then do nothing with them, then repeat :D but I will actually use this one if the windows 10 port is good

    • +1

I use a second monitor at my desk. Dual screens causes many issues and you can't have your own mouse/keyboard just for that screen.

So I mounted my Raspberry Pi to the back of my second screen and have a wireless mini remote to select the TV Show etc I want within Kodi.

    • It can be used to enable retrocomputing. E.g.
      * As as file server for Apple II computers
      * As an emulator of Apple II computers
      * Or put one inside an Apple II to give it access to Pi interfaces.

      • I used it for Mame & PSX, but it was too slow.

        • +1

RPi2 is apparently fast enough to run PCSX full speed.

    • I have a rPi B running PBX for almost 12 months.
      http://www.raspberry-asterisk.org/

      • can it do the 729 codec?

        • No, I use the codec on phones or ATAs.

    • My RPi sits in my Computer Desk Draw collecting dust :)

Not powerful enough to be used as a HTPC

Makes for a good FTP Server or Motion Sensing Recorder

    • If you have kids, I suggest installing Kano. You won't have the advantage of the custom keyboard, but it is excellent for learning.

  • Ordered - hopefully this will play HD video well, even if it doesn't - it will be fun to tinker with.

  • +1

one of the reason to buy this is compatibility with windows 10 (IOT version). things that i can think of to create with it.
*Public Display TV player (instead of using expensive mini PC) play PPTX file.
*easier to work with for those who doesnt want to spend time learning linux.

    great find! Upvote from me!

  • hang on i'm confused.

OP linked to http://au.element14.com/raspberry-pi/raspberrypi-2-modb-1gb/… which appears to be a model B, not B+

    the model B+ is http://au.element14.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDis…

which is the correct one referred to by OP?

    • +2

      http://au.element14.com/raspberry-pi/raspberrypi-2-modb-1gb/…

The new one is the Raspberry Pi 2, Model B, 1G.
The old one is the Raspberry Pi 1, Model B+, 512M.

      Same board layout. Confusing naming.

    • +3

The B+ you link to is the original Raspberry Pi (1), not the Raspberry Pi 2.

The Pi 2 B is identical in layout to the Pi 1 B+ (eg 4 USB ports).

The link in the OP is correct.

      • +2

So his title is wrong then.

  • Great, I can use my $25 voucher from the last order!

  • +6

Note that the $38 doesn't include GST. It should probably be added to the title.

    • +3

Just came to write the same thing. Dodgiest part is that GST didn't appear until after I confirmed and placed the order. On BOTH the checkout AND order review screens it came up as "$Total: 219.60, GST: $0.00". Wasn't until I went to the order history page that the true price of "Total: $241.56, GST: $21.96" was displayed… Poor form.

      • +3

Agreed. I have bought from them before so knew what to expect.
The only time I saw GST was the second confirmation email they sent me!

In their defense, they are focused on wholesale/trade buyers. They even pop up a dialog trying to send you to retail-oriented sites.

  • No. of Bits: 32bit

Does it come with a screwdriver?

    • huey

    • +2

      How many cable ties?

  • I went to buy this, on their website but then I remembered I have an OUYA in a box doing nothing.

OUYA is more powerful in terms of raw power, but it does nothing for me.

    • You can sell it to me if its doing nothing for you.

      • How much would you pay for an amazing OUYA with two lovely controllers?

  • Damn I bought this, didn't read carefully and got charged with 12.95 shipping… bought a case with it too.

Didnt end up as a bargain, got charged $57

    • Ring the customer service line and see if you can adjust the order before they send it.

  • anyone doing arcade emulation on one of these? mame etc?

If so, how do you find it - and what do you use for controllers?

    • I've done nes, snes, gba etc on the B+ with USB snes controller clones, worked fine after lots of setting up and fiddling

  • I think I'll wait a couple more years for a RPI that can do 4K video.

    • Youll be able to get android sticks that do native 4k for pretty cheap, fairly soon.

      • I believe you can get sub-$100 android tablets already with 4k and hdmi-out , using Allwinner A31s SoC.

      • You can already get a board like this capable of 4K video but its still fairly expensive. Very Powerful though of course:

        "
SoC – AllWinner Ultra Core A80 4x Cortex 15, 4x Cortex A7 big.LITTLE processor with Imagination Technologies PowerVR GC6230 GPU with 64-cores, and support for OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0/3.0, Directx 9.3
        System Memory – 2GB DDR3
Storage – 8GB NAND Flash + micro SD card up to 32GB
Video Output – HDMI 1.4a up to 4K30

  • Nice. I almost bought a pre-loaded SD Card but I might make an afternoon out of it, wander down to office works and grab a card/reader before setting the software up myself.

  • Just got one, but my price was $38…. or is that US dollars?

    • +1

ok I'm an idiot, that is pre GST

  • RS sell them for $41.80 (includes GST) and includes free shipping: http://au.rs-online.com/web/p/processor-microcontroller-deve…

      Version 1 model

    • nope, $47.50 inc GST

  • Better make up your mind.. 2 left!

    • Crap, all gone.

Ozbargained!!! Stock was 500 at start of order and only 32 at confirmation and I have an account and items waiting in cart.

  • +1

    Out of stock

  • +1

    SOLD OUT

  • Finished!

  • +1

Bloody hell. The order and sign up process was so cumbersome that the stock levels went down from over 100 to 0 while I was trying to order. At one point my basket disappeared and I had to go and readd everything.

I also don't know why I didn't already have an account, I've ordered from here before. Maybe they didn't make you create an account in the past?

I don't want to order now and wait god knows how long for stock.

  • SOLD OUT! Element14 busiest day of the year :)

  • Few hours ago I ordered.. the stock was 1902… :)

  • Sold out at Element14 now.
Should not be too long before more stock arrives. They will continue to accept orders anyway.

  • Oh well, probably didn't need one anyway. I've still got the original one sitting on a shelf covered in dust. I think I turned it on once :)

Still, I wish sites reserved things for you for a few minutes when it goes in your basket to give you time to complete the order. I wouldn't go to a supermarket, put something in my basket and then someone be allowed to come and take it out of my basket and run to the checkout while I'm looking at other stuff.

    • +3

Logically true, but business would rather prefer 'one in hand is better than 2 in the bush' principle.. cant blame them.. online market is full of unfulfilled baskets..

$57 (+7 odd for postage to Sydney)

$64 ($16 more than elements14 only - not bad if you REALLY need it..)
