I recently unlocked my Nokia Lumia 630 and have been fiddling around with it a bit. Windows Phone 8 is surprisingly impressive (and so much better than Windows Phone 7 as it was on an old HTC Mozart I had once upon a time).

However, there is such a depressing dearth of apps available on Windows Phone that I really think I would need on a day to day basis (Google Maps for its public transport timetable service, Gmail app - although the new Outlook app is indeed excellent, it just isn't as well integrated with Gmail's little side-features) that I don't think I could ever really move to it as a daily-driver.

I wonder if this will change with Windows 10 - I doubt it.

    • +2

if you use nokia here transit, it has all the timetables in there

unfortunately with the gmail tags you can't make them disappear into folders

    • +2

If you really like WP and need Gmail, try Metromail. It works great and has support for Gmail labels.

      • +1

yeh i've used Metromail for a while, not a bad replacement.

    • +1

In case it helps you - there are third party apps that give you Google Maps on Windows Phone, and they will give you public transport info/timetables. eg. GMaps.

  • What's the denim update?

    • +1

Its the name of the latest windows phone update.

    • +1

      Firmware update for Lumia

  • Storage is the main -'ve factor , 8gb is not enough these days.

    • +3

microsd card if you need it is like $9 for 16gb :)

      • +3

Plus sd access seems far more seamless than android.

        • +10

In windows phone 8.1, You are able to write delete move rename any file on SD and here map data can move to SD. Try deleting or moving a file to SD in kit kat!

        • @paloverde88:

          Exactly.

    • It's not really a negative when it has easy expandable storage.

  • Much like Android with lollipop Microsoft phone updates are colors instead of pastries. This one puts live folders on homescreen and other nice stuff.

  • +1

My 920 is having issues…would the 735 come close in terms of features?

What's the max capacity of the SD?

      • +2

I'd imagine it could handle the 2TB max of the SDXC standard. Just untested as anything above 128GB doesn't exist.

        • 256 is real

    • I would say it would come close to features in most regards other than the camera.
I think the 920's camera is still better.

    • Thanks for replies. Lack of Optical Stabilisation is a bummer…otherwise seems pretty good especially with expandable memory. I take a lot of snapshots every day which chews storage.

Takes a smaller (nano) sim than I have in the 920. Presumably I can contact Telstra for a smaller one.

Will the 920 NOT receive Windows 10…or is it unknown?

      • All Lumia WP 8 devices will get Windows 10, apparently. :D

        http://www.theverge.com/2014/11/13/7216421/microsoft-says-ev…

        • I should probably just wait for the next gen of Microsoft Lumias and see if they have a decent flagship or just go mid-range. If they go mid-range I may have to jump back to iPhone (argh). Bloody Nadella hates hardware…ruined the momentum of WPhone and Surface.

        • @myfeetarehappy: Actually, the windows phone hardware limits I think were loosened with Nadella in control? Anyways, next gen Lumia is said to use Snapdragon 810, which is pretty much the SoC that all of this year's Android flagships will use (except Samsung). I just hope to God that Qualcomm fixed the overheating issues (without throttling it).

        • My bad, I thought MS was behind the specs of the Lumia 930… Turns out they weren't. In that case, bloody Nadella.

        • @AznMitch: I was a big proponent of Wphone (920) and Surface RT 1 & 2 then under Nadella they laid off 12,000 ex-Nokia staff and killed the Surface RT 3 (mini?) leaving just the 3 Pro which is basically a >$1000 ultra-book with detachable keypad.

Then they release Office for the other two platforms for free, and a more recent version than on their own hardware, thereby removing a key selling feature.

No clue what the will do with mobile hardware now…certainly nothing exciting on the horizon.

        • +1

@myfeetarehappy: I personally think what he did was necessary. When Nadella became CEO, Surface line was losing lots of money. Nokia was too big for MS to hold onto without making it smaller and more efficient.

As much as MS is decent in hardware, MS is a software company. Their main focus wouldn't be sales of their own hardware; Their main focus would be about sales of software, creating a system where consumers buy their software more and more. I think releasing Office on Android and iOS was done to increase revenue from OneDrive and MS softwares. Also I think this is the reason why they were considering releasing Cortana for iOS and Android as well (this caused huge outrage on WPCentral, as I recall). Creating a better Windows PC environment might work out better, for MS, than limiting certain aspects of WP, like Cortana, to WP. So I think what Nadella did with Office was fairly reasonable from the company's perspective.

As Surface sector of the company was losing money, I think it was necessary to cut Surface Mini out.
          1. It would've probably diverted some of the sales from SP3.
          2. RT has really limited consumer base.
          3. Introducing more RT products would've made the Surface line to lose even more money.

It's my 2c on MS and your comment. I am relativelty tired and therefore some of my sentences might not make any sense.

EDIT: It wasn't me who down voted you btw.

  • +2

A tad hard to get excited at this price. The HN sale back in December was just so much better.

    • +1

That's water under the bridge and so 2014.

If you look at the prices today in February you see

      Officeworks $273,
      Dick Smith $399
      Harvey Norman $328
      Good guys $273
      JB $398,
mobiciti $325 (all as at 12 Feb 15)

So $245 minus 5% OW price match is really a god send.

Even e10 petrol is now $1.20

      • +1

Still, a Snapdragon 400 1gb ram phone? Moto G and similar have always been at the 250 price point.

        • +1

Because it is windows phone OS much like iOS a snapdragon 400 Quad with 1 gig ram is already a speed demon simply because Windows phone 8.1 like iOS is not resource intensive it runs very happily even with 512 megs.
iphone 6 is only using 1 gig ram.

        • +1

Use the phone and you'd be astonished by well it performs day to day activities. The AMOLED screen also makes it look great while doing all that.

        • @paloverde88: Though, I'd argue that it's because Windows Phone doesn't have that much Apps to begin with that runs on the background. As more apps start to work in background, it may get worse. For example, my phone has become more resource hungry since WP 8 to WP 8.1 upgrade, I think it's due to the changes in refresh rate for the live tiles and more lenient app background usage. At least that's what I felt with my Lumia 925.

Though I do admit that Windows Phone have relative advantage over Android in resources, so it's hard to compare Android and WP on hardware and hardware alone. Though with newest Windows Phone catching up to the specs of the Android flagships (i.e. 930 uses Snapdragon 800, next gen will use Snapdragon 810 etc), I am not sure how long this comparative advantage will last.

        • @razzy:

I bought the 735 from the HN sale over the holidays for my uncle, but decided to play around with it first.

Have to say I am pretty damn impressed with it. Buttery smooth and beautiful AMOLED screen, especially when using a black background which makes the screen just blend with the rest of the front face seamlessly. The world wide free offline maps and navigation is a bloody good bonus.

If WP gets as much support from App Devs as Android and iOS, I would totally jump ship to Microsoft.

        • @razzy:

Windows phone performance is smooth, I have a 1320 which also uses s400 and it lags only a bit more than my One m8 does when loading web pages. The keyboard on wp is better than Android and iOS, which has always surprised me how fluid it is.

The downside to WP in my opinion are, lack of apps and the browser has issues displaying some pages correctly. Ozbargain doesn't displays correctly on my 1320. Supposedly windows 10 has a new improved browser coming that'll change things.

Another neg is gaming sucks on a phone with these specs. WP app store lacking in the games department too, so if you looking at gaming I suggest comparing alternatives.

I don't know how these phones compare with similar priced phones with similar specs like the moto g though.

        • @Ronnnie: Ozbargain works fine on my 930. There was an update that had IE add a bunch of tags to its useragent string so that websites display as what iOS/Android would get.

        • @TheContact:

I still have the issues. Do you have Denim firmware?

        • @Ronnnie: Yep, I've got Denim. Though IE did that before Denim for me. I believe it would have been part of 8.1 Update 1 which has the live folders, though MS is bundling that with Denim for some devices.

        • @TheContact:

Yeah I'm on developers so I guess that could be that. Just have to now figure out how to get it back to normal. I have a lot to learn it seems. :P

        • @Ronnnie:

I have been pleased with the gaming on my 735 - currently playing Modern Combat 4, Modern Combat 5:Blackout, and GTA: San Andreas. Also, the sound quality coming from the phone from GTA is awesome.

    • People are still buying Blackberry and BlackBerry have new models out including a very expensive passport the world also revolves around other operating systems.

    • +3

      Having a future?

People're changing their phone more often like changing their clothes.
How long had you been using your previous phone? 1 or 2 years? or less?

Do they use all the features & applications on the phone? No. They use what they only need.

The good thing about windows phone is it's simple.
Some people're still think it's complicated, just ask your mum or grands.

      • -1

        True that!

    • I use iphone but prefer android and find windows OS pretty promising. Very likeable tiles interface…. my wife own $200 htc phone with 4.5" screen while my iphone has 4.3". Her battery lasts 3-4 days… mine does one to two days with similar usage. I wouldn't discard them as they are serious competitor.

  • +1

I have No idea about these phones are they good as a Phone only with a little bit of internet use?

    • +3

Great phone, great camera and easy to use.

    • +1

Yeah they are excellent for use like that. What amazes me, my 1320 can get up to around 10 hours on screen time when streaming from netflix for instance. Not that a 6 inch phone is good for stuff like that, but I was curious what I could get because the battery has blown away any other smart phone I have owned.

  • +3

    I bought one last year.

Really like the phone, and really like Windows Phone. I'm not missing any apps either. I can't think of any major apps that are missing other than Snapchat.

The phone is silky smooth, works faster than my previous Android with 2gb RAM and Snapdragon 800.

    Battery life is great.

The camera is average, although better than most ~$200 phones. Don't expect it to be as good as the 930 or 1020.

  • Is the Windows Phone version of Spotify still severely crippled?

    • There was a major update a month or two ago that makes it seem the same as the iOS version.
I'm not sure if it's missing any features compared to the Android/iOS version as I don't regularly use Spotify on any platform.

  • Great price for a good phone :)

  • Great phone, enough apps for me but took ages to find a good Gmail synching calendar (true calendar 8) only one choice of keyboard which is not very functional and yes the Spotify app is terrible

    • You can add any Gmail calendar to Outlook and sync it that way if you like. However all my Gmail calendars sync automatically anyway. Lumia 830 on Denim.

  • I gave this deal a plus

There was talk a little while back of MS allowing Android apps to work on WP to solve the lack of apps issue which is a dealbreaker for quite a few people

  • Anyone knows if it comes with a removable battery?

  • +1

quite a good phone, great design ,great front camera, great here maps, great battery

  • +1

Not as good as the HN deal with the $100 Coles Myer gift card via redemption.

But its a good phone. Not worth $250 IMHO. A guy from overclocker's trading forum was selling his few months old 735 for ~ $100

  • Windows 10 Preview is coming out today :D :D :D

    http://www.windowscentral.com/windows-10-technical-preview-p…

    EDIT: IT'S OUT… for Lumia 630, 635, 636, 638, 730, 830.

    • Lumia 730 is Lumia 735 one is 3G the other 4G much like Lumia 630 and 635 and 636 so 735 is eligible for Win phone 10 preview.

      • Hmmm, I am not sure. That is possible, but I wonder why they didn't include Lumia 735 in the list if it was the case. They certainly did it with Lumia 630 (Though I get the feeling that that might've been because of dual sim models in Lumia 630s.) Who knows, even 735 doesn't get a preview access now, it probably will sometime soon.

        Anyways, my source:

        http://www.windowscentral.com/windows-10-preview-only-these-…

Also, Windows 10 looks amazing… Though it will be buggy as hell because basically it's at beta stage.

      • 735 is not eligible for the WP10 preview yet, confirmed by MS. They specifically listed the 6 phones that it is available for and the 735 is not one of them. The 730s OS partition is slightly bigger than the 735s, and the partition size is the reason for the staggered release.

I've got WP10 Preview installed on my 636 (735 is my regular phone) and so far it's…….pretty much the same. The new settings app is nicer though a bit buggy, and the new Homescreen is different but not sure if I like it more than the old one. I love the parallax scrolling effect in WP8, which is completely gone from WP10 :(.

        • It might be something that they've left out. :S
Hopefully, since I love my parallax scrolling too.

        • @AznMitch:Fingers crossed all around that it's in the final build.

You also can't choose which part of an image shows on the homescreen, ie. center your picture so you see what you want. You choose an image and it just left aligns it. Not good, but alpha so fingers crossed.

  • Why not consider te 535 its cheaper with dual sim, very happy with the handset. But the touch screen needs improvement.

Only hope its upgradeable to win 10 and fix or improve these issues.

    • the screen on this phone is equivalent to the ones in the top end phones, the ones you get in the 5** and 6** series can only be equated to the low end androids etc, bad viewing angles, bad colour

you will be "wow"d when you see the 735 screen

  • How is this getting so many upvotes? Its been a lot cheaper before. $246 before and several deals which where cheaper before with the cash back.

I went for this one, ended up with the phone for $109 after selling the 530 for $70

    • +1

err cos those deals aren't available now. At this point in time this is a good price for the phone

      • A bit contradictory, a lot of deals get negged or no votes because its been cheaper before. An example would be this one, it was the cheapest at the time but not well received as it had been cheaper previously

        • the point of the site is to highlight the best deal at the time.

If you have use of a time machine let me know and I'll nip back and get the phone from when it was cheaper before ! :)

    • +1

It's getting upvotes because it's a great phone and it's a bargain at this price. Regular price is $300+.

  • I got my partner the motorola Moto g 2014 for his birthday next week…..should I take it back and get this??
Your opinions would be appreciated everyone! TIA :-)

  • Coming from the Lumia 720, I think this phone is a pretty good upgrade. The buttons feel much more clicky, screen is much nicer and processing power's been given a slight boost.

There are some key features I miss and some others which I wish I knew before buying this phone. Hopefully it helps some of you out:

    • Not having a physical camera button! Thankfully they realised this and you now have the option to put the camera as short cut in the action centre
    • No Glance screen! Why they didn't put this into an AMO-LED screen device mind boggles me. I really liked it on my old phone
    • No passive-voice activation for Cortana. Apparently processor isn't right for it. Ah well, you get what you pay for.

It's really these small things that prevent me from really enjoying the windows phone experience. I'm not saying it's bad though

  • Nice phone, nice price. Missed the HN deal. But bought it from OW during the deal. Fully worth it for the price.

  • I think I would much rather this than an Iphone

  • Got TGG (sydeny- Penrith area) to price match the 735.It is lot better than 520 and 530, Much faster and is 4G.

  • +1

Price matched at OW penrith $236.55 Thanks all

  • +1

Bought one from OW Sydney City and was also able to price match plus 5% off. Excellent deal!

  • Bought one from East Perth OW. $236.55. Plenty of grey stock.

    • Any chance you can upload the receipt or something? I don't have an allphones locally so I don't think OW will price match..

      • I don't have one locally either. I just showed them the website with the allphones price. they matched it without any issues then took 5% off it.

    • grey stock also comes with a green case ( with wireless charging ) inside the box.

  • +1

Yeah it's all good. I managed to get one and they didn't care. Woo!

  • Got my 735 for $223 from Harvey Norman. Told them I was on my way to Office Works to get them to price match minus 5% from www.thinkofus.com.au who sell them for $235 delivered.

    So whoo hooo I'm happy.

  • Hello guys.. Am not familiar with Windows
Mobile, I always use Google maps (android phone) for work. Is it any similar apps like Google map or GPS guide for Nokia 735? Thanks

  • Anyone have a OW receipt to scan? I'm in ACT so they'll say no local stores… but I've had luck previously in Braddon with scanned OW receipt.

  • can confirm this is working again. 249 at AllPhones…236 with price match at Orifice Works :-)
