Huawei Ascend Y330 (Vodafone Prepaid) $49 at Kmart

20

I was at Kmart Churchill Centre (SA) but it could possibly be nationwide.

Can't see it in the catalogue, so I'm not sure when the promo pricing ends.

The display model showed $79 price tag, but the price tag below the boxes in the cabinet was $49 (and that's what it scanned at).

The Y550 (was $79, but now $89) is the updated version of the phone with 4G capabilities and a 64 bit CPU, not much reason really to get the Y330 unless you're desperate to save the 20~30 dollars.

    • I would tend to agree with you - Y550 is a better phone in almost all aspects - 4G, quicker CPU, but screen doesn't look quite as good due to a lower pixel density than the Y330.

Putting the much faster CPU aside…
The Y550 has Kitkat, that more than makes up for a very minor (for the size) difference in screen pixel density. It also has a much better camera, a bigger battery, an IPS screen, DLNA, a front-facing camera (Y330 has none)and last, but far from least, it has 1gb of RAM, where the Y330 only has 512mb.
It's hard to think of any reason to get the 330, apart from poverty.

Picked up a Y550 from DSE a few weeks back for $89 on sale. However, hesitate to recommend it as I think there is an issue with the GPS system of the Y550. Annoyingly Strava seems to drop out on occasion/often during my rides and I get 'helicoptered' to the point where the phone picks up the GPS again - sometimes kms later. there might be an issue with the power management settings interrupting strava - trying to shut it down because its using power whilst the phone is 'asleep. fiddled with those but it still happens occasionally. Never happened on my old G526 which is basically the same 4G phone.

    • Yes, same thing happened to me with google maps. GPS signal drops out if all windows of the car is shut.

      • Me too.

I've had good (ie: $$$$ - S3, S4, iphone) phones and cheap ones and I'm finding much yuckier GPS performance on the cheapies.

Also having problems with one app (life reminders) but otherwise super happy this phone for the price.

      • If you are using google maps then you are using gps and internet access to feed the map data. Temp internet signal loss will cause your helicopter effect.

We use Here on both our G526's (no internet required) and never a problem.
        The same with Sygic…

Real question can it be unlocked

    • Several eBay sellers appear to be selling codes for the Y330, and I'm sure Bagman could probably unlock too.
