    Excludes the X1 :(

    • Won't work for the New X1, but it'll work for the X1 Gen 2!

  • It excludes almost every ThinkPad that has the non-broken TrackPoint setup. :( FYI people have had success installing the X250/T450 etc touchpad with buttons into the X240/T440 etc so you could probably fix one yourself.

    lenovo is sooo expensive…

    • No, it's ThinkPads that are sooo expensive.

I've been pretty happy with my X220. I'd like to pick up a X1 at some point as I use the trackpoint a bit (Have a Dell XPS as well and really dont like their keyboard in comparison)

I think they're worth the money, personally.

  • Are prices in us or aus dollars? Thanks

    • It's AU store so price in AUD.

$500 for a 14" i3 with 4GB RAM and a dock is not too bad. But i3 4000M is previous gen now.

    • Yeah the only value I can see is if you went with that 14" screen laptop. Most laptops < $1000 have a 15.6" screen.

    • $500 I would presume it's the $499 E440 + $1 OneLink dock? Any other laptop at this price point has docking station support?

      • Yes, the E440. Quite good for $500. It has AC Wireless some more!
The dock is this one: http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/auweb/Leno… (for $1)

        • so tempted to get an E440 with i3, 8gig, 840m, 128SSD
was looking at it last week and now its $100 cheaper :)
Spec'd as above at $654 with the education discount on top of CNY2015
          ($714 with an i5 and $830 with the i7)

actually rang the call line and we quickly realised that with Chinese New Year there's almost no chance of getting it built and shipped within the next few weeks :(

You can, if so inclined, customise that model with the i7-4712MQ for a total of $687. The discount applies to modifications too, it seems. So the i7 with 8gb RAM is $718 and with the 840M gfx card added too is $814.

      • A quad-core i7 with AC wireless for $687 is actually pretty impressive.

        • the quad-core i7 is impressive, but Intel AC wifi cards aren't too expensive. You can buy them locally for $27 or off ebay from HK for $17.

        • @eug: yes, but for a manufacturer to include it as standard…
Dell ones don't even support dual band by default, let alone AC. My work laptop is 2.4GHz with 100Mbps LAN!

        • @Make it so: Wow, that must be a pretty old laptop. 100Mbps is pretty ancient!

        • @eug: believe it or not, it's near new. Fourth gen i7.

        • @Make it so: Hmm, are you sure it's 100Mbps? Is the switch it's connected to definitely a gigabit one? I haven't seen a 100Mbps laptop for at least 10 years.

        • @eug: Yep, very sure! It's a bottom-range Dell inspiron with, believe it or not, i7, 8GB RAM, and dedicated graphics. Why on earth it is crippled with "fast ethernet", who knows….

        • @Make it so: Oh wow. Shame on you Dell! :)

        • @eug: you'll find that many laptops under $700-$800 don't have gigabit ethernet. Dell Inspirons - seems that only 14 7000 has gigabit, as all others are either 10/100 or have no Ethernet port at all. Most don't think laptops for the home market needs good ethernet connection.

        • @scotty: That's quite surprising.. I guess I haven't looked at cheaper laptops recently. I would have thought the cost savings would be quite minimal.

If I had a $700-800 budget I would probably consider getting a good used one over a cheap new one. I recently picked up a used ThinkPad Yoga i3/4GB/128GB SSD with OneLink dock for $576 off ebay. The i5 model was going for about $700+.

  • Been a while since I've looked at Lenovo's laptop range.

Where did all the budget 13" Lenovo Edge's go?

Really liked my old Core i5 E320 that I got from 2011 for $520, now all you get is an 11e with a Celeron for $635… ouch.

    • You'll find that the new E450 is about the same weight as the old E320/E330 at 1.8kg, as it did away with optical drive. Screen a bit bigger but in FHD resolution by default.

    • Was looking for a small laptop as well like Toshiba L10. Its 11.6" only, but Celeron processor. Could not find anything similar here :(

Most of these come with pre-installed Adware that also doubles as a massive security risk, allowing the adware to snoop on secure connections, such as to your online banking.

How do you know it's "most of these"?
The article refers to Lenovo's consumer laptops. ThinkPads are not consumer laptops.
That article also says Lenovo has stopped doing it.

      • You're correct, Superfish only seems to apply to P, Y and Z series laptops.

And it's great that they've stopped completely absolutely disregarding any semblance of good information security practice.

Trust them with your money and information.

(And when did they stop doing this again? Within the last 30 days? Yeah.)

  • Lenovo CNY Sale has just been extended to 9 May.
