  • Not bad. I usually buy Japanese foodstuffs from the chinese konbini near the Rhodes train station and they're usually a giant ripoff. These prices look like they're 40% cheaper.

    • Ever been to Tokyo Mart in Northbridge?

edit - there's also this little gem which I love!

      • is Tokyo Mart in Northbridge any good?

        • It's quite big, so there's a nice variety depending on what you're after. Price wise it is typical of Jap goods you'll find here. They do have part of the store dedicated to homewares, too, and all are priced at two-dollars-and-something. A bit like a mini Daiso, but more practical stuff, less junk. Think kitchen utensils etc, lunch boxes. The price may have even been $2.80 for anything, though I haven't been there in months and the price may have changed since then.

They also sell booze! A beautiful wall of Japanese drinkies. Not cheap, but fun to look at anyway lol. Chu-hi cans, if you're into that. And the more hardcore stuff too.

Staff usually have limited English but do ask around, there is usually at least one staff member who has decent enough English to be able to help you out if you have any questions about products (or to simply translate/explain what on earth is on the packaging of items). They're lovely peeps.

Also, don't assume that everything there is a product of Japan, food wise. Still check labels etc. I was pretty saddened that all the more budget-priced umeboshi were from China.

Great place for cool condiments and snacks.

          hmmm what else..

I reckon it's worth checking out. Even if you don't buy anything, you could easily spend an hour in there just looking at everything with curiosity and fascination lol.

Here's an old review from 2011: http://www.b-kyu.com/2011/12/tokyo-mart-northbridge-japanese…. The store has changed a bit aesthetically since then, and there are different (or more?) products available. Pics in that review don't give the best idea of what the store offers generally. But yeah. Just go yourself :P

      • Yes! I used to love Tokyo mart!! …but a few years ago there prices skyrocketed even more than any other normal Asian grocer :/

        • I just go there for the cartons of umeshu. Well.. I say that like I'm there every week.. but I've only been there once. lol

Indeed things aren't cheap there :(

        • @waterlogged turnip: they have $2.50 Japanese household goods!! Most made in Japan too. Really it's a bargain in there :D
