New offer from Lenovo. Not a ThinkPad this time but a gaming laptop. Use coupon code Y50STAFF to get $500 off the following configuration:

  • Intel Core i7-4710HQ Processor
  • 4k UHD IPS Monitor 3840x2160
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 4GB
  • 16GB RAM
  • 1TB 5400RPM HDD
  • Windows 8.1
  • Dolby Advanced Audio

You probably won't be able to game at 2160P but the 4k display scales down well to 1080P. Still, 860M might still struggle on that resolution for latest gen games. With i7 and 16GB it is also a beefy workstation.

Y50STAFF also takes $500 off the 8GB RAM/512GB SSD model down to $1,899.

The HDD is a huge downer. Definitely go the SSD and the 8gb ram. u can always update the ram later..8gb would be more than enough at the minute.

    • Why not install your own cheaper/bigger SSD instead then? Usually the upgrades here are not great value for money. Also, does it mention whether the 8gb is in one or two sticks? If you decide to upgrade to 16gb you mightn't be able to reuse any of it due to limited vacancies.

      • Because doing that probably voids warranty if its not done by Lenovo. For an extra $200 ur not gona get much cheaper for a 512GB SDD.

        • that's the fallacy of upgrade pricing.
for an extra $200, you are just getting a SSD but not the original HDD that came with it.
You could spend $200 on a SSD (even if its smaller than 512gb) and still have a spare 1TB HDD if you upgrade it on your own.

        • True but firstly 1tb 5400RPM hdd cost like $70 these days plus its useless once u replace it unless u sell it as a spare in that case would get 30$ for it. The other side is not everyone can install an SSD and if u screw it up there goes ur warranty. (not to mention you need to spend time reinstalling windows on new SSD and do all that stuff).

        • Not sure about Y50 series. However with ThinkPad I think you still keep the warranty with DIY hard drive upgrades.

        • yet to be determined but I know many Vendors will void warranty. Be silly not to check and then root a 2000$ laptop or have it rooted 5 months later and them finding out u updated the HDD and now they dont want to cover it for a totally unrelated issue.

        • Upgrading RAM by purchasing two 8GB sticks sets you back $198 at PCCG, not including shipping. The 8GB RAM unit ships with two 4GB sticks and the device has two slots. Combined with Arwedda's post, you might be reinstalling your operating system even if you're not using a different drive! A quick survey of forums show that the rest of warranty is often honoured even when upgraded parts are still inside the unit when being serviced. You have the option of swapping back in the original parts when you send it in for servicing though.

Be prepared to change resolution to 1080p for playable framerates esp with the 860M Gpu. 1080p should scale nicely though (since 2160 is evenly divisible to 1080)

    • +1

It would even scale to 720P nicely (2160 / 3), and I suspect that 860M would be barely playable at 720P on some of the upcoming games (I am looking at you, The Witcher 3!)

Pity that Windows scaling is still terrible and thus makes this resolution completely useless.

  • from memory i think lenovo is 4 velocity points per dollar if you navigate via velocity FF, for those that are keen.

This is not the Kepler version if the 860m, it's the old Maxwell.

Not worth the money if you want a strong GPU for gaming.

    • +1

Maxwell > Kepler, Kepler is very old, GTX600 series, whereas Maxwell is 900 series. But yes the 860m will not be a great gaming card.

      • +1

Thanks, I got my series backward, this is the Kepler version which is thre last gen

  • You can get 4K model in USA for $999 USD

Is this one of Lenovo's laptops with pre-installed adware, causing a massive security hole? Honestly this whole Lenovo sale seems like them trying to head off the terrible terrible press heading their way with a massive sell-off of stock.
