The Melbourne Star Observation Wheel will be lit up with hundreds of little smiles this February 22, when we partner with Challenge, a Melbourne-based organisation that supports children and families living with cancer, to mark its birthday milestone.

Between 10am and 11am on Sunday February 22, the Melbourne Star will open exclusively to 100 Victorian families, all of whom receive support from Challenge for a range of everyday needs, such as home help, children’s activities and camps and weekends away for parents.

The Star will re-open to the public from 11am onwards and will be providing all Victorians* with a special thank you for their support during their first year of operations, with 50% off all single admission ticket options for flights taken between 11am and 3pm on Sunday, February 22. 10% of all ticket sales taken during that time will also be donated to Challenge.

A range of family based activities will also be held as part of the birthday celebrations including the return of the popular ‘Kiddy Rock and the Cool Bananas’, face painting and more; there might even be a few surprises! More information on the programme of events can be found on the site.

      Don't think that will ever happen.

      It could take up to 75 years for the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel to turn a profit, if passenger numbers during its first year of operation are anything to go by.

      Expected passengers per year: 1.5m+
      Actual passengers per year: ~300,000

        It was hilariously empty when I went.
        Multiple huge theme-park style queuing areas, with info displays and signs all the way through to keep people occupied and interested while they queued.
        Ran straight through them all right up to the cabins, and then wondered if the attendant would make us share a cabin with one of the 2 other groups in the line. Nope. we could have had a cabin per person if we wanted.

        Interesting, that is still 900 or so people per day. I was on the Singapore Flyer exactly one year ago, as I type this(!), and there weren't many people on it.

        That said, I won't be going on this Southern Star…. I would recommend going on the Singapore Flyer though!

    So which date are they using for this "1st birthday" calculation?

    *The initial opening on 20/12/2008?
    *The initial re-opening on 23/12/2013?
    *Any of the re-openings after closures throughout Dec-2013 & Jan-2014?

    Dunno where they're getting the birthday from…

    Edit: seems the "birthday" is a charity's birthday that they're helping with/donating to.

      I think the charity is Challenge, they are closer to 30 years old.

    Think I've found the problem with your promotion, Melbourne Star :)

    Based on previous history of mechanical problems I wouldn't be suggesting there is even a remote chance my ride could become a flight.
