Plex - Android (Amazon AppStore) - Free (was US$4.99)

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Just noticed this is free at the moment, which is great as I was waiting for it!

I have never bothered getting Plex from Amazon before, as I had it on my devices already. But then, I got an Amazon Fire TV and I regretted not making that simple click. As Fire TV doesn't use the Google Play store, I had to sideload it on, which is not ideal as it doesn't appear on your homescreen.

Also free on Google Play. Always free?

    • +2

      Nope…not always free.

App has been free for a month or two. Plex moved to a single app model, which detects if you are a plex pass user via optional sign in .. or requests that you complete an in app purchase if you are not.

Yeah, this is sadly not a deal.

"- Move to alternative model where app is free but an in-app purchase or Plex Pass subscription is required to unlock unrestricted playback of remote media. Existing purchases carry over."

    • Not true for the Amazon store (and consequently anyone in the Amazon environment), it was 5 dollars up until recently. Granted it has been free on the Play store for awhile.

I do however agree that this is more suited for the forums though given the shift to the more freemium based model and this being more of an FYI than a deal.

Tir's quote is from Amazon itself. This is not a deal, the app is now free for everyone. You unlock extra features if you have Plex Pass.

        • It's a fine line between an FYI and a deal, and I did state it was more of an FYI than a deal in my comment.

The main thing I was trying to point out is that before the 18th of Feb, where it cost 5 dollars, you could not even install Plex for free. Subsequently you couldn't even try it out for basic non-plex pass functionality. As someone who's never used Plex before, it sure sounds useful (at the very least) to try out the most basic features Plex has to offer on my Kindle fire device w/o the need to side-load applications and circumvent the Fire OS environment :)

To each their own I guess!

  • Download from play store. It's got the newer version

  • Yes, not a bargain since already free from another source.

Well, I guess the question becomes; is the version on Amazon behind, meaning that it's the "full" version, thus making it a bargain?

If it is, I'd suggest jumping on it right now.. Otherwise, it's already too late!

    • Can anyone confirm this ?

    • Plex on Amazon was recently updated, probably still behind the google distribution

  • No deal, its been free for ages.. you still need plex pass anyway.

    • The Plex pass is not needed.

      • If not Plex pass, than you need to make an IAP. They merged the paid and free versions.

    • plex pass not needed. You can still make a one-off in-app purchase to activate standard features.

So many clues that this is not a bargain, should go in the forums, and the OP banned (j/k on the last bit).

    1. Notice how there is no "List Price" crossed out with free underneath? That means it's always free. Check out app of the day to see what I mean.
    2. The app offers in-app purchases.
    3. The description itself;

    What's new in version 3.9.4.321
    NEW:
    - Move to alternative model where app is free but an in-app purchase or Plex Pass subscription is required to unlock unrestricted playback of remote media. Existing purchases carry over.

    • Yep, they used to give away the good version in these deals, but not anymore. Glad I got it before

So… If you have the previously paid for version, then it unlocks? Really glad I got it previously then!

      Afraid to update now! :)
