  • If you're closer to Victoria's Basement it is $69 e.g. http://www.victoriasbasement.com.au/Product/Details/89653 (one of the available colours).

Looks like these are the ones you need to freeze the insert in the freezer for 18 hours.

Correct. They're only really good for one (maybe two) batches before they need to be refrozen. I had a Krups one I gave away, and bought a Sunbeam Gelateria (avoid these like the plague - the motor is weaker than arguments supporting homeopathy). They're fun if you want to just make a single batch, but anything more and you're worthwhile getting something else.

the motor is weaker than arguments supporting homeopathy

        LOL

      • you gave away krups, and not recommending sunbeam, so which one do you have now (and good)?

        • +1

Honestly, the Sunbeam would have been great if only the motor wasn't so weak. If they fixed that design flaw, then I'd recommend the Sunbeam. I've been considering buying another one which has a refrigeration unit in it (there was a $250 one on CotD). My main gripe with the freezer bowl makers is that you're working with a temperature that can only increase. With the Sunbeam and refrigeration ones, you're working with a system which will continuously decrease the temperature.

      • I've got the 2L Cuisineart and it struggles with even a single batch if filled all the way, even with refrigerated ingredients going in. I previously had a cheapy from Aldi - about a litre IIRC - and it was just as useful for 1/5th the price. (Gave it away on getting the Cuisineart - should've waited and returned the Cuisineart).

  • review please anyone? can make durian ice cream?

    • +1

I have the older model and yes, you have to freeze the bowl for at least 12 hours before you can use it.
It works ok, the ice cream that you get will not be that hard, so you probably have to put it in the freezer for a bit.
Can you make durian ice cream with it? I'm pretty sure you can, but I think the smell will stick to the bowl for a while so you cannot make other flavour until the smell disappear.

    • Even in light of my comments above they are fine if you want homemade icecream. It can take some time perfecting recipes though. I use plant milks (esp almond) and make them even creamier by adding coconut cream or blitzing in the vitamix with more raw nuts.

Not tried durian but used other fruits (strawbs, mangos, etc.) and the results can be great. Add jam or pulverised fruit towards the end for swirls. I also make peanut butter / choc icecream with massive amounts of peanut butter - better than anything I've ever bought. And crushed up Oreos for cookies and cream.

Most often we make a fresh batch while having meal and have dessert straight out of the freezer bowl - gone in minutes.

    • Simple durian icecream recipe: mashed the durian flesh, mix it with half melted plain vanilla icecream, back into the freezer. Better than most durian icecream sold in asian grocery store.

      • will give this a go - thanks Jackfruit
