    Note the reduced annual fee of $299 for the life of the account (usually $395), with an annual $49 fee for the Citibank Qantas rewards program.

  • $348 to get 70000 points. Is that really a bargain?

    • +1

      Yes. I can pay you $500 for 70k points

      • -6

        You 'can' pay just about anything, for just about anything, and you can get tens of thousands of points for free, by signing up with other cards. No way is $350 for 70K points a bargain.

        • +8

          Are you sure about that?

          Let me show you something.

          Perth to Dubai - October 13th, Direct flight BUSINESS CLASS on Emirates via Qantas website.

          cost: 72,000 Qantas points + taxes (not sure but usually couple of 100)

          Actual cost: $6,396.00 on emirates website.

          Now tell me that $350 for 70k isn't a bargain…

        • +1

          @wazza23: Since that's a "best case" value - what is the worst case? If I wanted to cash it in for Coles Myer vouchers?

        • I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong but I'm getting 772,000 points required when I search on the qantus website..

        • +2

          @teehee:

          make sure you select 'search classic awards' and you are logged in

        • +3

          @batiudrami:

          37,500 is a $250 jb hifi gift card. You can do the maths

        • -4

          @wazza23:
          you're missing a factor of 10.
          it's 700,000 points.

          otherwise i'd be booking now..

          edit: wow u were right…(when u try classic rewards)

        • +4

          @Nav2k:

          Nope you are wrong. Make sure you select 'search classic rewards'.

          Economy class 36,000 points, Business 72,000 and First class 108,000.

          This is an example to Dubai one way.

        • +2

          @Nav2k:

          Login to the QFF section and search with "Classic Awards" enabled.

          Wazza23 is correct.

        • -1

          @wazza23: Just have to make sure you have points for free flight home otherwise a) live in Dubai forever and wash dishes (not too bad really considering it's tax free) b) must still fork out ?? ($3000+)for return flight

        • +2

          @momov3:

          You don't have to fly business back home.

          You also don't have to fly business there. Fly economy there and back with a few more points.

        • -3

          @wazza23: I don't understand how 37,500 gives a $250 JB hifi card, and then double that amount allows you a one way business class flight to Dubai worth $6K?? (Could it be the taxes add a massive amount extra and the points are not worth all that in $) It does not make sense at all. I checked and it's 770000 points required. There is some confusion here. Can you explain?

        • @momov3:

          Are you a Qantas FF ? If not, you will not be able to get in and check the system that wazza23 is using.

          Have a read https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/flying/using-points-awa…

        • I see it now with classic rewards enabled. Weird how its 770k points when you don't tick classic rewards enabled? Is there a special catch with the classic rewards option that we're missing here?

        • +1

          @teehee:

          When you don't select classic rewards you are just converting the $ value of the flight to points. With the 'classic rewards' there are a few seats on the plane in each class which they set aside for a points only reward seat. They are more difficult to get but are well worth the points!

        • @dazzywazzy: yes QFF member, now I understand.

        • Wow can't believe I didn't know this! This makes all the point offers very very appealing for regular flyers (although looking at Domestic flights it doesn't appear to be as good)

        • @Nav2k: so are you booking now?

        • @wazza23:
          You are pretty much just reiterating what I said; you can find just about anything on offer for a rediculously high price, if you look around. Just because it's possible to waste >$6K on a ticket from Perth to Dubai, or waste >70K QFF points on that same ticket, when there's infinitely cheaper tickets around, doesn't mean anything; and it's certainly no bearing on the real value of QFF points.
          And as JD points out below, and I alluded to above, there's frequent offers of 50K points with no initial sign-up fee.
          So this is not a bargain.

        • @GnarlyKnuckles: I should hope those offers for 50K points without sign up fee will be shared on this site. I must be sleeping then because I haven't seen them of late, and I would prefer a no hefty sign up fee. Is there any going around by chance, would hate to have to call up to cancel a card just after getting the points without appearing so obviously greedy(guilty) for just the points reward.

        • @momov3:
          See my reply post below, for a 90K QFF points combo of two cards, for a total of less than $100.

        • @GnarlyKnuckles: If you have a planned return flight sometime soon this is still a bargain. If not, then its better to wait for more low fee cards

        • @thevofa:
          I'm short 20,000 points unfortunately…but will keep an eye out for classic rewards from now on

    • Its a bargain. Ive sold 100k points for a little as $1000 and as much as $1400 in the last 6 months

  • Welcome to OzB, you need to add fees to title please.

    • Oops. But title would not allow anymore characters, reached limit.

  • +2

    Not a bargain in my books, they often give away 50,000 and 1st year free.

    • +1

      That's what I've seen too. This seems to be a bit too expensive.

    • +2

      A "NAB Qantas Rewards Premium" card is currently being offered with no fee for the first year, and it comes with 40K points.
      You can also currently get an "ANZ Frequent Flyer Credit Card" for an annual fee of $95, which comes with 50K points. Less than 1/3 of the outlay of this 'bargain' Citibank card, for more than 2/3 of the points.
      Get both, and you have 90K points, for under $100.

      So how is 70K points at a cost of almost $300 a bargain?

  • Fee aside, 70,000 bonus points is the most I've seen from one card.

    • +1

      a couple years ago there was an offer of 80K miles.

    • There have been 100k offers but require income >$150,000 and ~$100,000 investment account. Not really a bargain and people like that don't frequent OzBargain

    • I got this same card last year with a 80000 signup bonus.

  • So it should still be okay if I get this card for 1 year and cancel it before the next annual payment kicks in. I won't lose the points right?

    • 100% correct.

    • +1

      Just make sure you get the points before you cancel

  • Here's what I did when I signed up on NAB Platinum card when it was offering for 50k QFF as bonus with annual fee of $ 250/annum.
    1. Signed up and spent the minimum requirement to acquire the QFF points
    2. Once points had been posted, call the CS line and asked them (NICELY) to cancel the card AND reverse the FULL amount of annual fee charges (NAB charges 1st year annual fee after your 1st transaction).
    3. ???
    4. PROFIT!!!

    Worst case scenario (if CS refused to refund the full amount) they're just going to charge a pro rata annual fee. So if I'd been with them for 1 month, they're just gonna charge me = $ 250/12month * 1 month = $ 20.83!!!

    I remember not long after I cancelled my NAB card, they started this latest promo where they waived the first year annual fee of $ 250 but reduced the points to 40k QFF for Platinum. I applied the same card again and voila, they accepted my application in 60 seconds. I had just received my 40k bonus points a week ago so in a span of a few months, I've accrued 90k QFF points from just one bank.

    Ohh on my other did the same thing as well - lol

    I'm just sharing my story, not sure if the above strategy would work on Citibank promo.

      Re:

      "NAB charges 1st year annual fee after your 1st transaction…"

      Erm… no, they don't:

      http://www.qantas.com.au/cardselector/InitialLoadAction.do

      • NAB website says only 20k points for the Qantas premium card.

        • +1

          It's not a NAB promotion, only a NAB card. Apply thru Qantas site for 40k points

          https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/partners/card/nab-qanta…

        • @carwashhair:

          This may b a dumb question but what counts as eligible purchases to get the 40k points?

        • +2

          @docmartin:

          Usually any purchase that isn't a cash advance, balance transfer, forex/international transfer or ATO/government payment. Just think of anything that is just moving money around and it's not eligible.
          Otherwise you can go buy a 50c cone at McDonalds and you should get your points in 4-8weeks :)

        • +1

          @docmartin: aaaaaaaaaanything. Buy a packet of gum, get points, pay off card, close card.

        • @docmartin:

          "…what counts as eligible purchases to get the 40k points?"

          Just about anything. Anything tangible, of any price, bought from any shop that accepts the card will count.

      • -1

        The promo was ran by NAB, not Qantas! Apply a Qantas Platinum card and receive 40k bonus points (sorry, not 50k) but there's an annual fee of $ 250. I think I applied the card in Sept/Oct 2014 and received the points in Nov 2014. NAB is usually pretty quick to post the bonus points to QFF accounts.

        • +1

          OK, so your post was based on a 'deal' you utilised almost 6 months ago, and the '50K' points you mentioned in it was actually an error, and in fact you meant 40K.
          May I politely suggest that you research/error-check your posts a little more thoroughly in future, to minimise the chances that you are simply misleading everyone on the site with false information (either because the information is completely out-dated/no longer current policy, or because you have simply written '50' instead of '40'; or in this case, both).

    • how about if they insisted us to pay the full annual fee?

    • That strategy is good for points accumulation, not so good for your credit rating :)

  • Citibank are notoriously desperate to keep your business, even if you don't use your cards (they begged me to keep my Emirates Mastercard after I'd received my Signature).

    $350 is not a bad price for those saving for business/first class trips.

    The best approach would be to apply for the card, then immediately cancel once you get the points, citing the high fees. At worst, you've got your points (though they might be one of those banks that partially rebates fees when cancelling between fees).

    At best, they may very well offer to credit the fee back.

    I say do it!

    • +1

      I say do it!

      I look forward to being asked why I'm cancelling…
      Because JohnHowardsEyebrows said to!
