ASUS Vivotab Note 8 64GB $279.00 + Shipping @COTD

Cheaper than the Cheapest on static ICE
$289.00 from MSY (32GB) or $438.00 from DigitalStar(64GB)

This tablet is one of the relatively rare tablets which has wacom pen suppport. Wacom pen allows palm rejection and pen pressure detection which is amazing when you want to take note or draw stuff. If you have other wacom pens from tablets or phones, such as Galaxy Note, Surface Pro (1,2), ThinkPad 10. Those are compatiable as far as I remember, though you'd want to check it first.

I personally think this is the cheapest option available if you want a tablet with wacom pen support unless you go into discontinued models.

  • Please, if anybody knows of a decent current deal on the Asus Memo Pad 7 (ME176C - the five different colours one, not the crap one Dick and JB are flogging currently) please let me know? Best I can find is $197 at HN, and when they were down to at least $149 at one point…

    • Hmmm, I think you'd have a hard time finding those. Would you tell me why you'd want them?

      • Just after a decent, cheap Android pad. Seems to fit the bill well. Plus it comes in red. ;)

Its not memo pad but check this out -Asus Fonepad 7" IPS Display, Intel Atom Z2420, 1GB RAM, 32GB Storage, 3G, Bluetooth, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, 1 Year Warranty $199

      http://www.centrecom.com.au/asus-fonepad-7-ips-display-intel…

      • Cheers jibupaul, I'll look into that. 3Gness may be handy.

It's a pretty slow tablet and lags a lot. The CPU is single core (I have one). For $199 I'd get something else, unless you want a gigantic phone to put on your face. Plus it's not upgradable and stuck on Jelly Bean.

        • Thanks happychappy1. Did some research and saw slow processor. Just want basic Android tablet for basic browsing by telly and Chromecast connection.

@flumpf: I got mine at The Good Guys for $124 (with $25 off) - it's an 8GB model.

For browsing while watching TV, you might find a smartphone might be better if you don't already have one. It's much easier to use with one hand as its lighter and smaller.

If its just streaming YouTube videos to the Chromecast (using the device as a remote control), then any cheap Android device will work.

Really depends on what features you want, and how much you want to spend.

3G on a tablet isn't really that handy, because you need a SIM card to put in it. If you already have a smartphone with a data connection, then it becomes redundant with tethering.

For example a PendoPad might work for you. Or a $218 Moto G 4G (at Harvey Norman). It's really up to you.

    • Why in the name of BEEP did somebody neg me on this?! Idiocracy thrives.

I think somebody must've thought your reply was irrelvant to the post. (It wasn't me btw.)

  • Ok, so I may have bought 3 different tablets over the past 4 days because I keep seeing better deals. My bad.
Anyway, anyone recommend a decent docking keyboard with USB for this thing? I've seen them around! Link me! :D

    • I don't think there is one. I am glad to be proven wrong, but I doubt it'd have one.

      • Ahhhh you're right. All I need is a usb port to attach a 4g dongle so will just use OTG. I need the tablet's wireless connected to my camera, so can't tether my phone. I'm just hoping it will run photoshop ok (but it should well enough for what I need) Huzzah!

        • I don't think these would be powerful enough for photoshop and for the full USB port it has would need a dongle for MicroUSB to USB Female… You can always get those tablet keyboards that uses bluetooth?

        • +1

I reckon it'll run PS (for what I do- simply caption and ftp jpegs). I guess I'll soon find out in any case. Pretty sure I have a BT tablet keyboard somewhere round here…. thanks!

@imnotarobot: My win 8 tablet (Using Z3735 vs the Z3740 in this tablet, not actually much difference from what I can tell) runs Lightroom (the photography specific fork of Photoshop) alright if it's just normal pictures. But as soon as I start trying to deal with 12 MB RAW's it starts chugging, probably partly due to the fact that it's being read from the SD Card. Should be perfectly fine for your purpose however.

        • @imnotarobot:

If you do end up finding it a bit slow, and if you just want to add captions, consider a more lightweight program (e.g. Paint.NET, and there are many other options). For FTP, WinSCP is great.

Probably the biggest issues you'll run into are lack of storage space (PS is will take up a decent chunk if you want to do other things on it) and lack of RAM if you're multitasking with PS. The CPU shouldn't be a problem.

  • no HDMI/VGA out?

    • It has miracast? I know, I think it's one of the features that this tablet needs :(

Also to note that the glass on this is regular soda lime glass, not the more scratch resistant gorilla glass. So I would recommend getting a screen protector for it or else you maybe looking at scratches after a while.

  • I've got this 64Gb Asus tablet and I like it. The 8" size is handy. Writing is good except when near some edges. The highest volume could be louder. It could be just my unit, but the on/off power button could be more responsive- takes me several tries.

    • Near edge problem is unfortunately from it being wacom pen :(
