I was on the SoT a couple of years ago and because of rough seas there was a line-up of 30+ passengers trying to get to the toilet for their chance to spew - it was too dangerous to head outside and spew over-board.

It finally got to my turn after what seemed forever and the toilet room was literally covered wall-to-wall with spew from various passengers.

I desperately braced myself (the ship was swaying so much), leaned over what resembled a toilet and readied my throat to release hellborn. The chunks blew. And even though I tried my best, the violently rocking ship + physics meant that my spew joined others on the walls around me.

Was the worst night of my life.

So I'm going to be getting a ticket or 5 so that my wife and I can travel to Melbourne. We have twins and a 2yro daughter - as such we're "not allowed" to fly because we need one adult per child. Plus, no car rentals have three baby seats across the back row so we need to take our own car.

        Not looking forward to it.

        • +3

My memories of the spirit are very similar to yours. One of the worst nights ever. Also, even if the sea sickness doesn't get you, the spew smell around some of the bars will.

Can understand why you cant fly with three kids. We do it all the time. And rent a Camry. It has three anchor points as factory across the back. Fits three seats almost comfortably. I alway bring two extra anchor point bolts each time we rent just in case a Camry isnt available.

That is unfortunate. I've been on the boat twice and had no issues, lovely trip. Not sure if I was lucky or you were unlucky!

        • If your daughter is 2yo, then you would be buying a separate seat for her, so flying shouldn't be a problem with the twins on laps.. also, we have 4 kids (including twins) and I can still get 3 car seats across in our little second car (VW Golf) and have done so in a number of other rental cars around the world.. though I spend more and hire a 7 seater..

Id much rather fly that take the boat!

Just in time for the sunny Tassie winter season.

    • +4

You jest, but a lot of winter in Tassie is frosty mornings and sunny sky days. Still doesn't mean the temperature gets above 5 degrees though.

    • +2

You'd be surprised, Tassie has seen a boost in winter tourism because of Dark Mofo. Brilliant midwinter arts festival supported by MONA.

    • It's not any worse than Victoria's winter. Daylight hours are a little shorter. Covers the first 6 weeks of trout season too.

    • Tasmania has some lovely winter days. The lack of smog means the sun really warms it up, even when it's only 12 degrees.

A warning to Queenslanders though - tropical shirts, shorts and thongs will be inappropriate attire when you get off the plane.

You can be unlucky on the boat, but I've had many a trip with a totally flat sea. Kwells are a good idea if you're prone to motion sickness and you can buy them on the boat if you forget before you sail.

  • Do you require to use snow chains driving down there around July Aug?

    • +1

You'd only need them if you went to Mt Field (maybe) or Ben Lomond(always).

    • +1

Do people really think this? It's not that much further south than Melbourne!

      • well, best to ask and prepare than turn up with the wrong car etc. :)

Last year I went to Hobart on a cheap flight and used imoova.com to rent a van ~$1 per day. As it is Tasmania's low season there are heaps of Vans and I had a free trip on the ferry included from imoova.com.

It was a fantastic trip and I'd highly recommend it, there is much to do; freycinet national park, port arthur, bay of fires, strahan, walls of jericho national park to name a few highlights!

The southern part of the state is for n00bs and old people. Seriously, the north is where it's at.

      • +3

You kids have already ruined QLD. It's good that you don't like Tassie.

      • The jobs are all south in Hobart. How exactly is it all happening in the north? I live in the NW and I would love to know where it is at up here.

        • how far nw :P alot of factories in ulverstone and burnie

        • @mp3police:
You must be kidding :-). Burnie, lots of factories? The only thing factories are doing up there is closing down :) They are all excited because a Burger King is opening up and will create jobs. Plus, he was implying all the good stuff is up north. I've nothing against working in a factory, but if that is where it is all at, then this place is really doomed. I'm not in Burnie, about an hours drive from it.

    • @razzamatazza Thanks for the tip, just had a look at site, did you have to pay for insurance?

      • They offered (and highly recommended) it to me when I picked up the van.

        • so it's not compulsory then, I take it. Just noted that the premium was $1,000 I think.

        • @oldrocker:

          Not compulsory

    Fantastic!
Looking for a trip to the mainland around then.
    Cheers OP

Just to confirm, booked a ticket one way from Devonport to Melbourne for two adults and my car. $179.
      Ripper of a deal!

Federal Government Rebate as far as i can tell.

  • Is this from and to Melbourne only?

    • Do they still do the Sydney voyage? I thought that was trashed years ago…

      • +1

Melbourne only now. You are correct. Sydney route is long gone.

    • +1

Yep, also if you aren't sure whether to bring your car, note that it arrives in Devonport which is 100km from Launceston/300km from Hobart.

  • -1

Maybe you guys can bring me a job or ten on the Spirit over with you? On a serious side, it will be cold, at least for most mainlanders, so bring your woolies x 10.

    • Here we go again. Tasmania is no colder than Victoria in general and Hobart has similar temperatures to Melbourne. It's a beautiful city, rivalling harbour cities around the world.

Launceston, on the other hand can be freezing, featuring fog loaded with wood smoke. Nice enough during the day when there's no inversion layer.

      • ThirdRonnie, what about the other states? WA, NT, QLD? Of course Tas and Melbourne have similar weather. I am talking about the rest of the mainland.

  • Must be govt wanting to increase the diversity of the human gene pool in Tas.
