UGOOS UT3S Quadcore Android/Linux Media Player (4GB RAM/32GB HDD) USD $159 Shipped @ Gearbest

UT3S

Hi all,

Just finished reviewing this box and managed to get a coupon for Home Theatre Life readers so figured I'd share.

GearBest have the UGOOS UT3S for US$159 with 4GB RAM and 32GB of onboard storage - US$30 off the usual price.

There's also a cheaper version with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard for $119 using the same coupon.

I have to say that it's a pretty impressive box able to play pretty much anything that I threw at it and enough graphical power to max out some Android games at 1080p (i.e. Beach Buggy Racing). It'll be my goto for a while for Android gaming. They've also just released a Ubuntu image making it a viable desktop device too.

  • Do it install android app? Like say I have NBA gametime, I can install and watch NBA without needing to screen cast?

Does it have a lan port?

    • Yep, it's an Android device so you can install Android apps like you would on a phone.

It also has Gigabit ethernet. Speeds were quite good, though not full Gigabit obviously due to internal bandwidth limitations.

  • Does it do 4K output like the Chameleon ?

    • So feedback online says that it does indeed handle 4k output. I just don't have a 4K TV to test it for myself - Might have to keep an eye out for a bargain on one :p

      • I might upgrade to one later in the year…

        • Yeah. My main issue is the lack of content - plus I'm terrified all my 1080p content will start to look awful :p

        • @Darkscythe:

Reckon it will have Netflix 4K support ?

        • @Kaboda: Not sure on that one I'm afraid.

the 4K TV's i've seen do an excellent job in upscaling…

        • @Darkscythe:

Bought a LG UHD tv with no webos so it doesn't have netflix on it. Was deciding whether or not it was worth buying a Nvidia GTX 960 / 970 just to future proof Netflix 4K.

Although there isn't currently anything on Netflix 4K I would really want to watch at this point in time.

        • @jv: I agree - Upscaling algorithms have got much better. I was just joking around on that one.

        • +1

@Darkscythe: Chances are it doesn't. 1080P content looks great on my 4K TV.

  • Memory: 2GB/4GB

Does this mean UBUNTU has 2gigs and Android has 4gigs ram ?

    • +1

Sorry, there are 2 variants - one with 2GB RAM/16 Storage and one with 4GB RAM/32GB Storage. The first one is cheaper. Just used the same spec list for both.

      • Ok that made sense.

  • "Pretty much anything" What format did it have trouble with?

    • Mainly Hi10p which is entirely handled in CPU. The 720p sample I had was fine but 1080p was no good. Though trying to find anything that will do hardware Hi10p is tough.

      • Not really hard, more like impossible. There is no device that does Hi10P hardware decoding. All you can do is get a box powerful enough to software decode any Hi10P file you may have. If it can't play 1080P Hi10P then it wouldn't be the device for me. Though I'm quite content with my Chromebox.

That said, did you test any HEVC content by any chance?

        • Yep, HEVC worked well - used various samples and resolutions up to 4K HEVC

        • Chromebox?

        • @Darkscythe: Cool, thanks.

        • +2

@jasecs: Chromebox, modded to be a standalone Kodi (formerly XBMC) box.

        • @daerka: I hear they're meant to be good when modded.

        • @Darkscythe: Sure are. No hardware support for HEVC, so these can't do 4K HEVC, 1080P HEVC is the limit. These generally do play 1080P Hi10P content rather well, though. It's currently my number 1 choice for a standalone Kodi box.

Would you mind to post a link to your review?

  • I rather to setup a raspberry pi. It will costs half this price.

    • +1

At least the Pi 2 is usable now. I mean, if you're mainly playing current standard formats.

Raspberries and Oranges… I kind of hate myself for writing that

Try not to take a picture of the Pi2 with a Xenon flash.. hahaha :)

  • I would recommend rather machine with Intel CPU, you can have windows and android in it, supports 4k and pretty sure you can get it cheaper.

Just one of it up here

Hope it will helps to decide.

    • I'm reviewing the VOYO atm. Not too bad and works fine for media but it seems to throttle down due to overheating during gaming. Best Windows device I've tested so far is the MINIX Z64 http://m.geekbuying.com/item/MINIX-NEO-Z64-Z64W-Windows-TV-B…

I got the Voyo Windows Mini PC from last deal and the only thing I can say is that it overheats incredibly.

The problem is with the design of this unit. The motherboard is actually placed upside down within the case to have the CPU and heat spreader (not a real heatsink) faced downwards. There are only a few small vent holes at the bottom and does not have any active cooling to extract the heat out from the base and the heat spread. This is why the CPU sits around 68c idle and gets to 90c+ on full utilisation before slowing down.

I'm using it now flipped around with the CPU facing upwards (heat travels up). This brings it down by 10c or so on average. blowing a small USB fan onto it further reduces it by another 5c.

Otherwise its a nice unit. Just try not to burn your fingers though..

      • Exact same experience.

    • BTW - "Supports 4k" doesnt actually exist at the moment since none of these devices actually have the later HDMI 2.0. Yes you can argue it will work on 30 Hz but it doesnt really. The integrated graphics are a bit weak to push 3840x2160 for any of the current solutions.

      • I know the Haswell Celeron does a fine job at UHD@30 over HDMI 1.4. Not sure about any of those Bay Trail boxes, but I guess supports 4K means you can play some 4K content, i.e. as bandwidth allows.

  • Don't do it stay away from gearbest nothing but a dodgy business.if your product fails which in my case it did first day good luck getting things fixed you may as well throw it in the bin.they offer you a percentage of what u payed in my case I was offered 6.89us I payed 48.25 us or they ask for a video of the item with the problem they then send you the part which they think is the problem but to bad if it is not that part u require u are then asked to fix the device your self I am going through a shit fight with PayPal now so is my brother in law don't do it avoid at all costs banggood is way better so is tiny deals

  • Is it rooted ?

    • It's got a one-click root function in the menu. All you need to do is accept the warning, and it's rooted. Probably one of the better implementations I've seen.

      • Trouble is, if it's rooted Stan and other streaming sites won't work.
