Acer Aspire One AO751h $299 After $89 Cashback (Store price: $388)

180

Just bought this from MLN (I bought in-store). I think it's a pretty good deal to share. $299 for this kind of netbook is excellent value. Of course, it uses the lower-powered Z520 chip, but for basic web-surfing, word-processing, it should be sufficient. It also has one of the biggest screens for a netbook around - 11.6". Actual price is $388 before $89 cashback from Acer. Specs from website:

Processor: Intel AtomZ520 1.33Ghz

Memory: 1GB RAM

Storage: 160GB HDD

Screen: 11.6 inch HD 1366 x 768 (WXGA) pixel resolution, high-brightness (200-nit) Acer CrystalBrite LED-backlit TFT LCD

Operating System: Windows XP Home

Built in Devices: Up to 4 Hrs Battery Life, Integrated Acer Crystal Eye webcam, supporting enhanced Acer PrimaLite technology # WLAN: Acer InviLink 802.11b/g Wi-Fi CERTIFIED network connection, supporting Acer SignalUp wireless technology # LAN: 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet # WPAN: Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate)

  • Just read a review on CNET… apparently the processor is so slow you get frustrated with doing anything on it…

    But, great price either way!

EDIT: does this have a 6-cell or 3-cell battery?

    • been reading up on getting one too - but the reviews seem mixed - some say the cpu is fast enough - some not.

apparently the thing that doesnt play is youtube HD.
      but h264 @720p is fine

      can anyone confirm?

oh and im pretty sure its 3 cell battery.

  • Ok took this from mln site re how long battery lasts its says

A single charge is all it takes, and your Aspire one 751h is ready to roll all day with up to 8 hours of battery life.

    then

    Operating System: Windows XP Home
    Up to 4 Hrs Battery

anyone know how long as thats a hell of a difference from 4 to 8hrs.

    • 4 hours is the regular 3 cell battery - 8 hours is the extended 6 cell battery which is purchased separatley.

I think there are even optional 9 cell batteries on ebay etc. available.

  • Haha amusing, someone on the overclockers forum is trying to sell one second hand for $550 plus postage…LOL

  • Good Price!

    ==========Edit==============
Well, did some research online before using my credit card,
it seems this model has some problems such as freeze randomly.
Anyone got one of this before and have experience to share?
Was going to buy it for my mum, who comes with limited experience on solving computer problems.

Bought this from Netplus 2 months back for $499(6 cell battery). Got $89 in cashback few days ago from ACER, no problems with that.
I personally find 10.1 inch netbooks too small and keyboard very crowded. But this model has decent size easy to operate keyboard. It does tends to get slow when using too many applications but I guess an upgrade to 2GB RAM should help with that. I personally dont use it for any high end stuff. Works great for surfing internet, using Office applicatons etc.
Havent had any problems with a random freeze till now. 6 cell battery lasts around 6-7 hours with my usage.
    Cheers

Thanks for your sharing, seems a quite positive 2-month review.

  • So has anyone confirmed whether it's a 3 cell or 6 cell in this deal?

    • +1

This one comes with a 3 cell battery. Can't give feedback on performance though as it's a gift.

3 cell battery model(LU.S810B.005), $79 cash back only. not $89!

    • You're right. Will visit them again tomorrow and find out more about this.

  • Cool deal, but the specs are reallyy average imo. esp in this day and time

Cheap but 1.33Ghz??? Come on guys, it'd be worth forking out a bit more unless all you wanna do is write word documents and browse the net. The processor is the number one most important thing you should look at, then the graphics card if you plan on playing anything more than pac man on it.

    Everything else is easily upgradeable.

This is 3 cell battery,6 cell cost u over $100, buy with 6cell model about $450 (last week from mwave.com.au)

  • I have been looking for a netbook for uni, there are some great tweaks listed in the comments here: http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/05/18/acers-116-inch-aspire-o…

I only need it for word processing, running a reference program and opening PDFs. It'll be a study computer so not playing videos is fine! There are tweaks in the link above to allow this, though.

I am going to call to see if we can arrange courier on a certain date, will let you know what their customer service interstate is.

    • Okay I ordered one :) My phone went flat as I was ringing, but they said if I'm not there to pick up the couriered package they will leave a note and I can arrange to go and pick up the item myself. It won't get sent back to the manufacturer.

The customer service person was very friendly, and sounded local.

  • Hi,

Can anyone confirm that this is not a "Refurbished" unit with only 3 cells?

    Thanks

    • I believe it only has three cells. If you ring the 1300 number they should be able to tell you if it's new or refurbished.

  • +1

Confirmed that is 3 cell, price has been reduced to $378 so after $79 cashback price will be $299.

    • Thanks for that, I'll have to see if I can get the $10 refunded through Bpay!

      • I was charged $389, $11 over… Tell me how that goes!

  • lol they changed it:
A single charge is all it takes, and your Aspire one 751h is ready to roll all day with up to 4 hours of battery life.

My day lasts more than "up to 4 hours"

  • Out of stock……

  • Buy 6 cell model last u 8Hours of battery life For $350 to $380 atfter $89 cashBack

    • Do you mean 350 to 280? Where did you see it on sale for 350?

  • Not Available

  • Seems like it's sold out now. Sorry guys.

    • apparently there is 1 left in the heidleberg store - white - I got the last one at the richmond store. Someone cancelled their lay by - LUCKY.

Also the model I got was 6 cell?! woot!

      • ok also just to report - 720p/1080p content plays but only mpeg and only up to around 20mbit (TV broadcast ok - but say sample from a HD handicam = stutters).
h264 @720p plays but only if the bitrate is VERY low - eg. from a low quality 720p camera around 3mbit is ok - higher megabit = stutters.

        samples I used.
TV broadcast = all ok (but on the brink)
camera samples - 7d 1080p video (h264) = plays first frame and sound only
        d90 720p video (h264) = stutters (around 20% frame loss)
pentax k7 video (mpeg) = @720p low bitrate = ok , high bitrate = stutters around 80% frame loss
canon sx200 (h264) = plays first frame and sound only
        panasonic zs3 (h264) = ok
        kodak m1093 IS = ok

        • A good test but I am afraid to say it is quite misleading.

The GPU of 751H is Intel GMA 500, which can do hardware h264 decoding. I bought a 751H vista version. With latest driver and Win 7, I can play 1080p 8838kbps x264 by MPC-HC with only 30~40 CPU usage.

What you need is new drivers for GMA 500.

          See here:
          http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=87&t=1502…

          • @bennyzhou: oh yes - I knew about that - but I suspect that a number of users will just stick with the OS given which is winxp home - I did not update any drivers or install anything but VLC to play those files.

did u try a sample video from a canon 7d? DL here:
            http://s3.amazonaws.com/movies.dpreview.com/canoneos7d/video…

            7d / k7 records as 45mbit!

If this works I have no idea why anybody would complain that this netbook is slow? I mean are you going to try video encoding or something? lol

            • @voter1: tried your file with MPC-HC. No problem at all. Total CPU usage 30~40% and smooth.

  • I placed an order for laptop on Saturday evening but did not get an email back with payment info. I rang MLN West Melbourne on Sunday to get payment details but when I tried to pay I realised that I had Pay Anyone details and not BPAY. I thought as it was the weekend I would wait to see if I received the BPAY email and if not call Monday morning and just pay over the phone. I had my order ID and everything was ready for me to pay. When I rang Monday morning I was told that I had made a typo in my email address and that was the reason that I did not receive the BPAY email, I was also told that the laptop had sold out. I explained that I had already ordered it and I had my order ID but I was told that the order is not held until payment is made. Now before anyone bothers to bag me out on this I just want to make the point that I did not see anywhere in the terms and conditions that this is how it works, infact in my experience this is not how companies work. If I book a flight with Jetstar I then have a couple of days to make a Pay Anyone payment, my flight is held until I make payment or the deadline passes. Had MLN informed me that if my payment was not made immediately they would cancel my order I would have made more effort to pay straight away. Furthermore if I had managed to get around to BPAYing the payment it would have taken a couple of days to reach MLN so how do they decide which customers have paid first. I just think that what may be obvious to one person isn't always to the next and this is why companies have terms and conditions.

    • I did a BPAY order, and they did the same thing to me, even though there is a reciept number generated immediately. They did offer me a really good deal otherwise, though.

      • My main problem is that they do not state in the t&c's that this is how they operate,
