Any Whiskey drinkers here?

Hi guys,

just started drinking whiskey and have liked Dalwhinnie, any recommendations on single malts <$80 and blended whiskeys <$40 for beginners?

I hear the single malts are better but I would also like blended whiskeys for cost reasons..

also, where do you normally buy them? Dan Murphys? has anyone tried buying overseas from UK and US sites?

thanks

  • Not a drinker myself, but a friend of mine likes Lagavulin for around $80 when they have deals on here from Liquorland or Dan Murphys. Normal price is more expensive. I had a glass of Yamazaki 12yr single malt and it was very nice, but I'm more a cognac person. No experience with blended or OS shipped I'm afraid. Best of luck.

    • I hear Yamazaki 12 is a good one, but because demand is so high and supply is low, I hear the prices are a bit inflated.. I wonder if cognac will be the next in thing…I remember 10 years ago no one was drinking Whiskey

  • Buying from overseas might not be economical

    Also drop an "e".

    It's Whisky.

    • thanks for links…I looks like the shipping kills it especially if I am only getting 1-2 bottles at a time

bushmills 10yo is worth a look. gives the big boys a run for their money

    • just last night I read some reviews that bushmills black bush is supposed to be good and cheap….I will try it when it goes on sale…

      • +1

look into the 10yo aswell you wont be dissapointed and its cheap

It would be good if there was a dedicated Deals Category for alcohol…beer, wine, whisky, etc

  • I actually hate Whisky on the rocks, however a few weeks back a friend told me to try Nikka by the barrell, and absolutely loved it (coming from a non-Whisky drinker).

I got a couple of 500ml through duty free for $54ea.

I can't make any judgements on Canadian, American, Irish etc. whiskey but if you're looking for a good Scotch, I promise you will not be disappointed by a 12 year old Balvenie.
It's on the border of your price range but is a lovely drink.

Also, if you're looking for something really different, try a Laphroaig, it's super peaty and smokey.
I'm a lover but there are many MANY haters.

If you buy from https://www.masterofmalt.com you can buy 30m samples and they ship to Australia.

Also, my Scottish Grandfather taught me to drink whisky with just a tiny bit of room temp water to stop the alcohol from overpowering the softer flavours. His daily drink was a Bells (blended) which is really easy to drink.

yes, I will buy that Balvenie Double Wood for special occasions…and use cashrewards…..I also just bought a bottle of Voss still water (on sale in Coles for $2) so I dont use the chlorinated tap water…

    • Has anyone bought the 30ml samples, is that recommended? Seems expensive after shipping.

      • +1

I've never bought them but seems a good enough way to try a more expensive whisky if you're not sure if you'll like it or because a whole bottle is just outrageously expensive…

It would be the only way I could ever afford to taste a $14,000 85YO Glenfarclas!

        • 30ml for only $750. Bargain! :)

        • I read somewhere that the experts can easily tell the difference between a $60 and a $600 bottle, but not when comparing a $600 to a $6000 bottle, that is a relief….

  • I have always like whisky and brandy, and have become more so since I cant drink wine these days. (That's another topic I should post the question one day)
Love to buy them when overseas, or when we have overseas guests. It's bigger bottle and more cost effective I think. Locally look out for deals from any of the bottle shop, and sign up for MyDan. Still not cheap but I have no other vices :-)
Went to Jack Daniel's hometown and saw the process. A bit taken aback to find out that they only use brand new barrels and ship the used one to Scots or somewhere. Hope to visit Scots distillery one day.
Heard Tassie produce not bad whisky, imagine it to be not cheap.
My other fav are Glenlivet, Chivas… St Agnes when I run out of cash. Also heard it can be done home-brew way. Will be curious to know if anyone tried it…..

    • When I go overseas I plan to get the Monkey Shoulder as it comes out cheaper than DM since its a 1 litre bottle… I would not mind trying the Aussie brands but I am just annoyed at how expensive they are compared to imported Scottish brands which have better reviews….

  • Regularly drink bailey nicole jarvey, very flavoursome - mix of 8 years old whiskies. Lagavulin when i think i m rich. U need to try all whieskies from all region of scotland then u will develop test and like. Some like highland whiskies some from skye and some love blend of all. I Like isley whiskies - lagavulin is isley - very smokey. I hate plain quaffable whiskies. But it is just me, take ur time explore u may like other type. Remember not to ruin ur whisky with water, ice, cola - it is best drunk neat may be with few drops of water to bring down alcohol % to 25 or 30.

    • haha, I just ordered a BNJ last night after someone recommended it…I will try the isley blends after having a few of the highland ones…

    • so adding a few drops of water brings down the serving to just 25%-30% from 40%?

  • I think I've tried almost everything there is and unfortunately I ruined my experience with drinking bulleit rye. It's 95% rye mash instead and unbelievable straight. Every now and then I stray back but always end up back at ryes

  • Whisky has a wide range of flavors. I agree on the small amount of water. Try not to use too much ice (or any at all). The flavor is closed up when it's too cold.

I love Glenlivet 12yo. Bushmills black is a good Irish blend. I will be mocked for saying this but I also like Canadian Club for a cheapish blend. Glenmorangie matured in Port or Madeira (sp?) barrels is nice for something different. Steer clear of thai or Chinese whisky Unless you know exactly what you're doing!

Scapa and monkey shoulder are also faves of mine but probably out of your price range.

Extensive international travel for work has given me an excellent liquor cabinet and a grumpy other half lol.

Keep an eye out for a whisky tasting event, they were really trendy for a while there and they will help you figure out what you like.

    • what do you normally buy at Duty free AUS? I notice the selection is not that big…

      • They have quite a bit at First Duty free but i wouldn't call it an extensive selection. They have all the things i mentioned above plus a lot more.

  • after a bottle of JW, I have finally appreciated how to drink it neat with just 1-2 drops of water (spring water)….and I like it!

  • I drink Canadian Club when I just want to get drunk. When I want something that's a bit nicer I go for Johnny Walker Black or Double Black, that I don't mind mixing with a bit of lemonade. Straight, I mainly drink Blue Label Johnny Walker, or Macallan 12. I definitely recommend the latter, really nice flavours, they're matured in sherry casks which gives them a unique taste.

  • glenlivet 12 y.o is as fancy as i get

    • Currently just below $50 at DM and 1st choice I believe… Good price for a decent single malt..

  • +1

we should try to keep this post going as "best single malt in current offers"

  • If anyone keen to grab either yamazaki18 or nikka 17 let me know. both award winner whisky. Cheers

  • This years world best whiskey, crown royal northern harvest rye, it is sell for more than $100 here in Australia,
    http://www.mybottleshop.com.au/crown-royal-northern-harvest-…
    http://casadevinos.com.au/crown-royal-northern-harvest-rye-c…

It cost like less than $60 in North America but why it is more than double the price here?

    • My cousin from California says they sell it for only US$40… It's a rip off since other whiskies such as Dalwhinnie are sold for similar prices to the US (factoring the exchange rate)

      • Did your cousin say they have stock there?

Looks like stock is drying up as per below, but I do not know how bad:
        http://www.bcliquorstores.com/product/429704

If there are plenty then I will get my friends to buy one, or I might even wait till my next trip over there.

No point of getting it locally as it is soooo overpriced.

        • +1

yes he bought me 2 bottles in December and he went back to his bottle shop in Northern California, 20 mins from SFO and he showed me a photo (from 4 days ago) that they were well stocked…at least 6 on display…I am sure you wont have a hard time finding it…

        • Thanks for the info, I shall get my friend in the states to get me one instead of getting rip off locally.

  • give this ago,
