I'm not aware of any sales right now but I do know that Target Kmart has something cheaper. Having said that, they are usually not too much cheaper, the build quality is not as good, and the box sizes are smaller so they are actually incompatible.
Sometimes IKEA has sales on these shelves or general sales but it's only once or twice a year. Worth waiting if not in a rush.
you can try gumtree or the bargain bin at Ikea. Try going to gumtree first since these kallax units are so frequently bought. Tip: try looking around the end of uni semesters (June/July or Nov/Dec) - there'll be students moving out and much Ikea furniture to be had for cheap. On a related note, search in areas near universities.

It is smaller than the IKEA version though. IKEA boxes are 33cm wide, so it's 99cm wide when you exclude the dividers. That 3x3 shelf from AMart is 888mm wide.
Does AMart also provide equivalent boxes for storage on the smaller units?
They look pretty good on display at the store but the boards are only 1.5cm thick (which I don't mind) compared to the thick Kallax from ikea. It was still quite heavy to lift so I can imagine the Kallax being even more heavy. I didn't see any boxes to go with them. I'm guessing my Kmart storage boxes that are W29x D29 x H25cm will fit them with small gap in the height. Also the deal was so popular they've had to put the extra two I ordered when at the store, on back order which will arrive in the second shipment!

Yes I've done that before. It was close to store closing time and I needed a quick way in.

They used to have mustard yellow, blue, green, orange as well as black and white. they now have a pink and a brighter yellow to go with the black and white.
Maybe they've changed again recently. I've got some mustard, blue and orange ones… might have a look for the pink! (in kids rooms)

It's worth noting that these were sold out at the Richmond store two weeks ago. They told me the next delivery was three weeks away. I rang them this afternoon and was told they have no stock but "a delivery is due on Saturday". It's a bit misleading to offer a sale item starting tomorrow when they have no stock!
