AirAsia "Ginormous Sale" Flights Mel/GC-KL for $119, KL-London $165, KL-Asia around $2- $8

360

It's on again, starting 11th November! Unfortunately the Aus-KL flights aren't as cheap as other past AirAsia sales but when you look at the route after the fares are still quite amazing. Note that i've only attached flights to/from KL. There are also sale flights to/from other destinations (eg. Bangkok to Phuket or most other Thai destinations is 107 THB, or about $3.50)

Sale apparantly starts at 3am, November 11. I don't know if this is AEST or Malaysian time. If someone knows, please update us and i'll fix up the thread.

Booking Period : 11 Nov 2009 - 15 Nov 2009
Travel from 1 May – 30 Oct 2010

Hint: If you book your return flight from KL to Australia separate to the flight going there, you can pay for the return flight in Malaysian Ringgit and pay RM 149/199, which is cheaper than AU$99/119.

  • Great. Thanks quackster!

  • So Melbourne to London via KL is $294, is that correct or have I completely misread it? Are there taxes on top?

    • It would be including taxes, no luggage or food etc. Both parts need to be booked separately as well. Sometimes availability isn't the best on this type of sale unless you're very flexible with date and willing to book far in the future. But considering that July/October flights haven't been available for too long, hopefully there should be some cheap flights during peak periods.

      • Thanks for the post, great price. I have never flown Air Asia before do you think for international they would be comparible to Jetstar?

        • I've flown them once from Bangkok to Macau on "Air Asia" and not their long haul "Air Asia X". I'd probably say that Jetstar might be better than Air Asia - would be good to hear from anyone else who knows.

Also just stumbled upon this: http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/community/general-airline-di…

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. To me, I'm paying to get from A to B so as long as the flight leaves on time, the experience inside is somewhat
bearable and the plane doesn't crash then I'm satisfied!

        • I just flew air asia to Vietnam via KL and would say the service is about the same as Jetstar I was lucky that both long hauls the seats near me vacant so the lack or leg room wasn't really a issue. I got the meal and this really wasnt worth the extra, stick to the chicken sandwich if offered.

  • -1

Well i will say Jetstar/Virgin is a better options. Now they are having sales to singapore / Thailand as low as 399 which is a better flight experience for a slightly more expensive (unless you want to prebook 1 year ahead)

    • +1

While I agree that Jetstar and especially V Australia are good options, its still hard to compare roughly $215 return on AirAsia with $800 on V.

  • Went to KL with them earlier this year and the seats are extremely narrow. On the way to KL I was sitting with my friends and whoever was sitting on the ends had to sit on an angle with their shoulders hanging out the sides bc we couldn't fit. Lucky we found some spare seats and we bolted for them once the seat belt signs went off (and did this on the way back too).

Pretty much if your not a very petite guy/girl then you will find that the seats are way too narrow, but if you get lucky a can find spare seats (eg. 3 seats between 2 of you) then its definitely worth it.

  • I went via Air Asia X to KL and return. Its worth mentioning that the seats did not recline. Very very uncomfortable. I must say its the most uncomfortable flight I have been on.

    • It used to be able to decline but i don't know since when they changed it and what's the reason behind it. my mum was complaining about it when she took the flight recently.

    • Agreed. It gets quite uncomfortable for long flights. What I always do is pay a little extra to get the most front row seats to get more leg room. But as far as 'most uncomfortable flights' go, I'd vote for Tiger any time.

      • When they first came to the Gold Coast, I took one of their first flights where the seats reclined, and I was very pleased. Earlier this year, I took Melb to KL, which did not recline. Real pain in the arse. I kept thinking for 16 hours (8 hours each way), whether it was worth half the price for 16 hours of agony.

The front row (exit row) seats could be worse, because their arm rests may not lift up. So if you are alone on them, you cannot lie down. And if you're on the window seat on the exit row, the emergency slide protrudes from the door, so you may not even stretch your legs properly.

If AirAsia can find enough passengers to make a profit, then more power to them, but unfortunately i've fallen out of their target market.

    • Agreed. It is the most uncomfortable flight I have been on as well. Not only narrow but not being able to recline makes it ten times worse.

  • Hi, thanks for sharing this. I am very insterested in this deal. i will probably book a flight from MEL to KL then KL to China (Haikou), but it seems i will have to stay one night over at the KL airport.

Does anyone know any budget and reliable hotel near the KL airport or any reliable website to book a hotel there? Thanks in advance. Cheers.

    • +1

Tune Hotels (part of AirAsia I think) has a hotel just next to the low cost terminal for about $25 a night.

      tunehotels.com

      • That is a really great price! Thanks a lot rakkie:-)

      • Actually, now the hotel room itself is $0.10RM, and the admin fee is about $10RM per night (I was booking for September).
And no, it's not an error, it's an actual promo.
So with the conversion rate (with a margin of error for conversion fees), it comes to $3.50 AUD!!

  • How about the return flight? Is the fare just a 1 way only?

    • Return leg is generally cheaper. Book in the currency of the departing flight (ie, pay in Malaysian Ringgit) and save even more money.

  • Sweet . Might take the day off to organize a holiday tomorrow .

  • -1

Thanks, but don't know if it is me… could not see the price as advertised when I try to book.

    Anyone tried to book?

    • Booking Period : 11 Nov 2009 - 15 Nov 2009

    • sale starts tomorrow…

      • Oh, yes, thought today is the 11th -:)

  • melbourne -> london via KL is around $366 atm for july 10. pretty cheap!

are you sure it's $129 from melbourne -> KL with tax? because it's $129 + airport tax of $67. so if the sale is correct, they're gonna deduct the $67 tomorrow? pretty sweet if true.

    • Just realised there was a typo in the title - its $119, not $129! So it should be even cheaper!

  • hope Jetstar have the similar deal soon. I am looking for the flight from Melbourne but not via KL :-(

  • Chopz - the sale hasn't even started yet, so I think anything you book right now is not part of the sale…

  • wait did i just read Hangzhou (Shanghai) RM 99 / CNY 248.00
wat currency is rm and cny, i thought chinese dollar was RMB
either way its cheapear than AUD lol

is this a direct flight to shanghai and return? cause i usually pay $1300….

    • RM is the Malaysian Ringgits
      CNY is Chinese Yuan

I've seen RMB used for renminbi. But as far as i understand renminbi is the name of the currency and yuan is the unit (like dollars).

    • Hangzhou is the destination

    • I'm pretty sure that'll be a direct flight from KL - so to make that work you'd also need to buy a return flight from Australia to KL. Am looking at doing this in January (so not during sale times unfortunately).

Haven't looked at the flight schedule on the way to China, but on the way home it will involve an overnight stopover in KL (but as someone pointed out above, there is a very cheap hotel very close to the terminal in KL apparently).

I'm not sure the technical difference between RMB and CNY, but both do refer to the Chinese currency (but, as quackster points out, RM is Malaysian Ringgits).

  • Hey guys - to note: just called their customer service team…. their flight schedule is only showing to the end of July 2010, so if you are wanting to book for a flight between Aug - Oct 2010, we will have to wait until January 2010 when the flight schedule is released…. bummer! But this is a really good sale! I've flown Air Asia a few times and seriously, for the price they are asking (esp with the ONLY pay taxes) you cannot complain! My experience was their planes are new, customer service is great, they offer most of the services of the other airlines, but you just need to pay a little extra for it, and don't pay if you don't want it.

    • +3

They will release the Aug-Oct 2010 tonight together with the sale, the customer service team is a bit ignorant on that sense.

Now the fare for MEL-KUL is $119 one way, and if you buy it in single ticket, it would be $238 (including taxes, but excluding luggages and meals). If you buy one way tix separately each leg you get $119 + RM199 (~$70) = $189 return all-in!

Bear in mind, that the fare is also subjected to CONVINIENCE FEE, which is A$5 each way per person if paying by credit cards. The only way to get away from this is to pay by PAYPAL.

The seat is extremely narrow and cannot recline well. But starting February 2010, they are stripping them all (progressively) and replaces them with reclinable seats. (PLUS the premium class offered will be fully flat seat), preview below:

      http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2650/3923299508_560d095541_b.…

      • that is the best comment I've read! I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch, and wait till tomorrow to work out what the total cost is… but I really love the idea of new seats! I am planning to travel in September, so even if they were delayed a few months - we'd stil get the new seats, which is awesome! :)

  • Hi, it is the 11th now. I was wondering anybody else waiting for this deal there. I still can not get the Aug-Oct flight on their website.

    • As usual, the midnight is from Malaysia, which means 3.01 AM Melbourne/Sydney time.

      • Thanks zack2008. I can go to bed now. Really sleepy… I will try it first thing tomorrow morning. Hope still some seats left:-)

  • I have tried to book now but why the fare still exclude tax?

    • +1

It starts at 3AM tonight (Australian Standard Time).. when looking at the booking engine, look up the fare of $52 (as the taxes is $67), which becomes $119. Good luck as the availability I imagine very limited.

      • oops… thanks :)

        • OOPs.. meant to say Australian Eastern Standard Time.

  • this is bs, got up at 3am for nothing:P Tried to book flights in June 2010, $159 MEL-KUL doesnt include baggage etc and about $250 from KUL to LON.

Return is the same price, so all up its around $1000 from MEL to LON… not worth the hassle. pay another $300-400 more and you got yourself a better airline.

Called call centre and got quoted 850GBP from MEL to LON Return, took ages to understand the operator…

Saw some flights for $56 but they are hard to find and you've got to be very flexible with your dates.

  • Wow. $5 return on Malaysian Domestic.

  • +1

    **************** Ok, it's on: Absolute unbridled madness! :) ****************

    • Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur return: ($119 + $119) = $238
    • Kuala Lumpur to London (Stansted) return: ($159 + $267) = $426

Total: $664 Melbourne to London return inc taxes!

As per usual, Adioso is chewing through the data so you can find which days have the cheap flights. Searches are:
    Australia to Kuala Lumpur:
    - http://adioso.com/au/mel-to-kul.html (Melbourne) or
    - http://adioso.com/au/ool-to-kul.html (Gold Coast) or
    - http://adioso.com/au/per-to-kul.html (Perth) or

    Kuala Lumpur to London:

Also, from London we now have a bunch of inventory from other low cost carriers (with some restrictions on timeframes that may not quite line up with the AirAsia sale):

By the way, I did this exact trip myself a few months back - if you're wondering what the experience is like, you can see our review here:
    http://blog.adioso.com/review-melbourne-to-london-with-airas…

    Happy hunting!

    • add baggage, CC fees, and more and we are talking around $900.

      • Depends how much baggage you bring, I guess :)

I prefer to travel with 15kg or less. 15kg on AU->KUL leg is $10/leg and KUL->London is only $6.36 per leg so total baggage costs (for me at least) would be:

        $10 + $10 + $6.36 + $6.36 = $32.72. Won't quite push it to $900 :)

        Cheers!

        Fenn.

  • Booked tickets for my parents Mel-KL, then next day KL-China(Haikou). But i already started regretting it, since I just realized the 24Hr visa they needed to stay overnight in KL will cost 300 Malaysian Ringgits each person. So finally the overall cost is not cheap and with all the hazzles… not worth it:( Should do more research in advance.

    • If you're Australian, you don't need a visa for KL (or at least, you didn't a couple of months ago when I went through there).

      • Thanks adiosofenn. But my parents are with Chinese passport, not that convenient.

  • is it me… or most of the kl to hk flights are at its normal price and not 8 bux anymore

  • Perth to London return for 3 $2400 with baggage , food leg room seats etc .
And thats absolute peak in August .

    • good stuff mate. $800 each is fantastic.

    • Yeah, I got mine for about $650 per person, flying Per - KL - Lon in September (+15KG baggage and meals)
Could've saved a bit more if my family wasn't squabbling about dates, especially on the Perth - KL leg.
Now to wait for confirmation and the itinerary and to start planning for the trip…

  • My friend got this problem: she got a booking number after submission of payment info, but got a "Pending" status. It seems her credit card hasn't been charged, while the exactly two seats displayed as occupied. She tried to call the 13 number, but could not get connected. Anyone else got similar problem? What does this "Pending" mean? Apparrently she got enough credit in her card. Thanks in advance. Cheers.

    • She is really frustrated now. Since she already booked/confirmed another leg of the same trip, not knowing whether to wait this Pending status to get to Confirm or should she make another booking. Anyone helps please?

      • One of the legs I booked was pending as well. It was processed after about an hour and I got the email. The other was confirmed immediately. If it is pending it will be fine.

        • Thanks. My friend booked around 7 hours ago, still no confirmation, nothing.

          • @Saturday: If it is pending will be fine, just means that the online processing is getting a hammering and there is a delay is taking the payment. Just keep a screen dump of the pending status (just incase).

On another note I cannot get on at all now. Booked my Melb - KL - Melb flights at 3.00am no drama. I want to book a few internal flights now and can't get on to the site at all.

            • @yarrow: Thanks yarrow. Your story is really encouraging to my friend. Let us just wait and see. I guess my friend will get a difficult day and/or evening though.

No real free meals, and i will think twice next time before getting into such drama.

  • I cant find a cheap KL to HK flight either.

  • I got the flights I wanted … my only gripe is - I can't "view" my booking because the "manage my booking" option doesn't go as far as September 2010 just yet. I want to add on seat selection and I can't do it. :( But otherwise, saving lots of money. Spent $333 one way for two people and RM 688 (about $233) for the return trip, again for two. Travelling with Malaysia Airlines in March 2010 - they had a big sale on a few months ago and even then, the prices were really good @ $690 per person, return… but right now it's less than that for two people return.

  • Will be coming back at 3am tommorow morning to suss it all out again. Takes hours othwerwise

  • Man Air Asia Website is SLOW. Is 474 MYR and 670 MYR the cheapest each way from KUL to London?

    • Yeah… it took me about an hour and a half to book flights for my family to come here for my wedding! :P

  • Love it how air asia have all these hidden taxes and charges, NOT! The could technically advitise flights for $1 and when u book then include 600$ taxes!

    • The only hidden charges that they have is the credit card fee which is only $5 per person each way. Other than that, all other extras (luggage, choose seat, meals, amenities) are optional and you can still fly without choosing them. So it's not really hidden, isn't it?

  • what about the extra 300 MYR in taxes when u book london to KAL??

    • KL to London is advertised as RM499. So you will see in the booking engine the sale as RM199 and after you click on it the total fare payable is RM499 as the taxes mount to be RM300. Hope that clears the confusion. Hehe. If you get RM499+RM300 then you havnt hit the sale yet.

      • WHat RM? is that same as MYR currency? all i can see is 474 myr each way and it say economic promo

        • yes, its short for MYR. Just like we use AU as short for AUD etc….

  • soooooo slow.

  • Still waiting 10Hrs later for confirmation .
My early morning order went through no worries but my 9am order was messy and slow .

    • Have you got the confirmation? My friend has been waiting for 27 hours…

      • I've received mine overnight, so hang in there, and give AirAsia a call if your friend can't wait any longer.

      • I rang today from work . I left the phone on speaker and was surprised after an Hour someone actually spoke . My credit card was declined so I rang the bank and they said it was fine . Rebooked it and was told to ring back in 4 hours but I was a bit busy . I can't check my flight on line as it only seems to be able to confirm flights up to july and mine is in August …….

You want cheap you get cheap . I no complain :) . My flights to KL are confirmed just not the London Leg .

        • What number did u ring? My friend has tried three different numbers but just couldn't get through. Thanks.

          • @Saturday: I rang the Australian enquiry line thats on their page . I rang at 8am west australian time and when I said I was waiting an Hour I wasn't exaggerating :) . Well a tiny bit it was 59mins .

            • @troyww: At least you were lucky to stay on hold, even though that isn't much. All I managed to get was the engaged dial tone every time I attempted to call the number.

Luckily my last itinerary has just been sent through, so everything is now confirmed. Just need to wait for my credit card statements to be updated so I can cross-check it.

  • +1

Booked all my internal flights this morning no drama. Still waiting for the PDF's but the bookings are showing when I log into my account so happy they are done and paid for.

Melb-KL-Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi-KL-Melb was $641 for 3 people or $214 each.

Now I just need to get from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi…

  • Does anyone know how you can change the currency in the air asia website. To get Jetstar to price guarantee I need to be able to show them the US dollar price instead of only seeing the aus dollar when the fares pop up. I mentioned the change currency tab on the side but they said they need to see the us dollar displayed on the main page instead of aus dollar. Can this be done? Thankyou!!

    • Either that, or once you come to the screen with all the airport taxes calculated, I think you can click to convert the price.
However, with the AirAsia site timing out constantly and going extremely slow, Jetstar may refuse to do the price match.

  • Does anybody know if flight centre does price beat or fly free on airasia.com quotes?

  • Has anybody contacted airasia by phone successfully?? I tried 1300 760 330 and +603 2171 9333 (Booking)
+603 2171 9222 (Inquiry) numbers, but all couldn't get through! Thanks for your help~~~~

    • I did manage to get through on one of the booking number, however, it always pretty much led to a voicemail message directing me to use the website…

      • I haven't even got into the voicemail! Cannot believe it! And I submitted 3 online feedback but no one answers! Thanks for your information anyway~~

        • Finally, called them last night, actually 1:00am today, fixed the problem.

  • got my tickets this morning, MEL to London for 3adults = $2400!
adioso was a great help… lets see how good the flights are going to be..
flying out in june so hopefully they would of put better seats in :)

  • hi good morning i booked but cant get pass they keep asking like this Guest contact details are missing or incorrect.
    Please enter the following:

    • Your handphone number should include international calling code with only decimal from 0 to 8.
('space', '-', '+' and other non-decimal characters are not allowed)
    • Your phone number should include international calling code with only numerics from 0 to 8.
('space', '-', '+' and other non-decimal characters are not allowed)

what should i white thank u

    • I'd say use 001161 in front, check and see what you should be putting in.
Or you can put in a correct email address.

    • You should write 614XXX, ommiting the '+'… so instead of writing 0432333333 or +61432333333, you should write 61432333333.
