  • Does anyone know if Air NZ does competitive one way flights to the USA or is it like Qantas and Virgin where one way flights are exy?

    • +1

I did one-way MEL to SFO with Air NZ for $600 at the end of 2013, which was around half the cost of a round trip ticket at the time. It's pretty expensive if you book via Air New Zealand themselves (seems to be more expensive than a round trip!), but if you book through STA it's pretty cheap. I'm under 26 though, so I could get their youth deals.

It might have changed since 2013 though, I'm not sure.

      • Thanks for the tips!

  • Is this entering SFO or via LAX?

    • Most likely AKL-SFO as NZ do that direct.

  • Beware of STA when booking your flights. I have just taken a flight to Auckland and discovered at the last minute that there was no baggage inc. When booking and paying on their website there was no indication that the price only inc carry on. Later correspondence did not mention baggage, in fact a STA link provided to the Air NZ baggage allowance website suggested 23kg of baggage was included. When my e ticket arrived the fare was described as "discount economy", as there was no such fare description on the Air Nz website this failed to clarify my allowance. STA suggested that I should have called their support team to confirm baggage allowance. A bit late after you have paid for your flights!

    • I'd be pissed off, if they didn't at least offer you a baggage option.

I've also never known a non-discount airline to not offer any baggage allowance.

      • Virgin and Air NZ have a 'seat only' option (discount economy) for trans-tasman flights.

Since all of Virgin's domestic and short-haul intl flights (excluding NZ) now include baggage by default, they should add NZ too.

  • are these deals available in store too or do you have to buy online?
