Oops! My bad! It does look like it's free! I'm going to so slam this deal! Thanks op!

    • -1

Since when is Free so bad…?

Apply "Practical Wisdom" & "Do the Right Thing" (fr Russell Peters' Chinese skit)…

      • I said it was a BOGOF then quickly edited my comment, that's what 'My bad' referred to.

Though I'm still not sure either way.

    • -6

Actually, ING Direct may require a $200+ withdrawal to get it free via an ATM. (Any amount can be w'drawn via EFTPOS, without fees, I think)… So not always free. :-)

      • +6

You can withdraw any amount for free, the $200 minimum was removed some time ago. In any case unless you want cash out, you can just do a balance enquiry to get the voucher.

  • +2

What can you do with an Optus $10 SIM? Google Play credits or anything like that? How many MB of data or calls or text can be achieved?

    • -1

Use it in Optus' MyPrePaid Daily [Plus] sxheme, ie, to Create an Incoming-Only Phone no. (eg, for an event, charity or business) - good for 6 months (extendable; just add $10 every 6 months).

(The min $10 amounts can optionally be used in same scheme.)
      .

  • +1

How much is it for non free people? $2.50?
    (ANZ)

    • +3

      $1 for a balance enquiry

  • Is the sim separate from the credit? Would be very, very good if it was ;)

    • -1

      Nope.

    • -1

The Optus SIMs can open any PrePaid acc't for you.
Eg, there's a MyPrePaid Monthly, but I don't know or use it.

    • also note, these Optus $10 sim starter packs are currently $5 in Coles for another week, until 31/3
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/187292

  • this is not FREE. you need to get one first for $10 then it FREE extra one. Please change the title

    • My feeling is that the second SIM pictured is for illustrative purposes only (how many people would buy/want two SIMs at once, given you'd presumably need to provide ID for each one). I'm happy to be proven wrong :(

    • +2

Oh. That's why there are two in the picture?

      • +2

2 SIM sizes… One pkg suppprts 2 of the 3 sizes, the other is Nano.

    • +1 ^^^ absolutely correct

The $10 OPTUS is not FREE (it is a BONUS).
Coles water and the coffee is FREE.
      http://www.colesexpress.com.au/services.aspx

(I grab the free water with ING Direct everyday)

      • +1

Really? Water is pretty cheap out of a tap at home and can be found free in many locations.

      • +5

Poor ING, paying $2.5 everyday and most of the money (maybe $2.3) goes into Coles' pocket rather than its customer's.

        • +1

With a Coles Mastercard some of the charge is coming out as well as into Coles pocket but I've no idea whether they, their credit provider partner or atm providers are winners or losers.

        • cheaper than setting up their own ATM network, and more flexible than joining Westpac's program like citibank has

      • +4

They just give you a sim card pack when you hand over the voucher for no charge. I'd say that is free.

    • What did you base this comment off? The word bonus and the image of 2 sims?

      • +2

This is a free item period.

    • +4

I got mine for free. No purchases needed. Maybe it depends on who you get. Very happy with a free sim :)

But… Realised I didn't get the nano sim when I got home -.-"

      • +3

Cut it down? Swap it at an Optus store?

        • good idea re swap!!! Didn't even think of that!!! Thanks for that!!! Upvoted:)

    • +1

It would be better if the voucher actually said it was a BOGOF rather than a picture of two SIM packs with the word "bonus" superimposed. Its ambiguous enough that I checked with the attendant on the off chance it was a freebie.

      • +3

I just handed the voucher over and they scanned everything then gave me the sim pack for free. Didn't have to pay for it.

        • +2

I probably should have just asked for a SIM pack and handed him a voucher and let the register work it out. I wonder if Coles has screwed up on this one.

  • +3

I grabbed one for free last week. $10 fast credit added to existing account when activated as a replacement sim. 1 week expiry on the $10 credit.

    • +1

      Wow! Good to know.

Easy to use the $ for data: 5 days @ ~0.5 GB per day (…Daily Plus)
… Not to mention unlimited SMS, MMS & Calls Out to w/in AU.

    • +2

Whats the process - can you do it yourself? Have to ring up?

    • 1 week expiry on the $10 credit.

Is that because it was a replacement SIM or because of your particular plan?

Is there any way to use say 10 of these to get $100 on one account that will last 6 months?

      • +2

Should be able to do that, a replacement sim is supposed to give the same recharge entitlements as a voucher.

        • +2

Could you please tell a bit more about the process?
Say I want to stack the credit, is it possible do you think?

        • +2

          @King Tightarse:

Unlike Telstra/Vodafone you can directly replace sim cards online with Optus. You can do this with a $30, $10 or $2 kit. Simply need to select activate replacement sim in My Account.

        • @JordanM:
Thanks, will stacking cause problems I wonder?

        • +2

          @King Tightarse:

I have not had any problems, I have been doing this with discounted $30 kits for awhile.

        • +1

@JordanM: So if you grabbed four of these kits you could end up with $40 recharge credit on a single phone number?

        • +1

          @sween64:

If your willing to swap out physical sims

        • @JordanM:
Does it extend the credit expiry date by 6 months when you activate a $30 kit as replacement sim?

      • +1

I activated the SIM 1 day before expiry of current credit. Expiry date extended for 1 week.

      • I have a few 30 dollars. Is the suggestion correct that I just activate long life and Me2U $60 or is that prohibited?

    • Why not use the Me2U credit transfer facility? It looks like Optus doesn't even impose a transaction charge on it unlike you know who.

      • You must have an active service for 35 days before you can use Me2U.

  • +2

No stock at Coles Express Deakin ACT.

  • +5

Here's a photo of the receipt if it helps, unfortunately couldn't redeem it as they had no stock, only $2 sims.

    • Save it for use at another store.

  • looks like this has been going for a while.

  • Apart from the SIM, I notice one of the 4 deals is for $25 gas cylinder swaps. That seems a bit poointless because it's on a big sign out the front and you don't need a coupon.

ALSO, when you spend $20 or more in store (gas swap qualifies), you get 10c a litre off fuel, stackable with the 4c supermarket discounts.

  • Thanks for this OP.

  • +2

This is interesting. I have a Coles MC that I signed up for just to get a $50 giftcard but have since then not used it once. I might make a few balance enquiries on it..

  • Never used these ATMs before, Do u get to chose a bonus option at the end?

    • +1

Yep it will prompt you near the end to pick 1 of the 4 bonus options on screen, then print a receipt with the voucher.

      • Make sure you press the correct button corresponding to your chosen bonus. There are 8 (IIRC) buttons and 4 options and if you're tall there could be parallax error.

        • +1

Do you receive nothing if you hit one of the four unassigned buttons?

        • -1

          @sween64:

I've never tried, but I'd guess that it wouldn't register.

    • +1

At the moment, out of the four vouchers on offer, the Optus $10 SIM is in the bottom left.
Edit: More precisely left column, third button from the top.

  • +1

No stock of the $10 Sims at the two servos I tried. Lucky I asked/looked before using ATM

    • +2

First servo: no stock. Second: took the last two. Third: I had to tell him they were behind the counter near the ciggies.

  • +1

Confirmed, I read the terms and conditions and it's definately free :) Wonder if they'll get sick of me after the 30th sim…

  • Went to local Coles Express, the shop owner/manager insisted I must buy one SIM to get one free because of the "additional cost", "bonus" wording and two SIM cards in the picture. Guess I have to try another Coles Express. :((

    • Or just come back another time when some one else is there. I think the way to go is to ask for the SIM and present voucher as payment though maybe it needs to be scanned before payment, I've no idea. If the register says $0 I don't think that most attendants would care past that point. If its doesn't just say "no thanks".

There's nothing in the T&C that indicates that it is a freebie or BOGOF.

I'm not sure what the word "bonus" is meant to indicate if it doesn't mean BOGOF. It it a bonus for using the ATM or your patronage?

    • Despite my initial scepticism, I'm now convinced it is free*. Actually $0.01. It says so on the cash register receipt when the voucher is scanned. ($0.01 cost for voucher followed by $10 discount) So all you need to do is to actually get them to scan the voucher as I suggested earlier. Don't confuse the attendant by asking if it is free. Get them to believe the register.

I wonder if they are giving them out for free because they are short dated. Mine expires in October. Not exactly short but not exactly "fresh" either.

I don't understand why they don't clearly indicate that its free on the voucher or in the fine print, perhaps they're trying to confuse you into buying something. I wonder if they are any other Coles offers the register doesn't enforce.

      * Free after rounding.

      • Every SIM I've grabbed has an expiry of 1st Oct 2015.

I wonder if they are giving them out for free because they are short dated.

        I'd say yes.

  • Tried this today and it worked fine, free $10 sim!
Not sure what i'll do with my 20 sims i'll accumulate over the next couple of weeks though..

  • I had to buy one $10 sim to get one more bonus one free.

    • +1

You should've made them scan the first SIM and the voucher. It would've come up free.

  • Tried 4 different servos around Melbourne, none stocked the $10 sim. The way the attendants stared at the voucher and read through the fine print, I doubt that they're gone due to popular demand. Not stocking up till the promotion ends?

    • I doubt they would carry a lot of stock normally anyway. I've been trying to get a starter kit for another provider from a local supermarket since November. Of course, they seems to have plenty of starter kits for a product that I don't want.

    • Yeah same for me no stock and confused WTF looking staff. Tried about five place got one :(

      • Where did you get it (if you haven't already cleared them off the shelves?!)?

        • Am in Melb so got it in Caulfield/Dand Rd Shell.
Was only able to get one.

    • I've been told that only the "larger" Coles Express stores carry the $10 SIMs. Most places only carry the $2.

      • I got one yesterday from a pretty small Coles Express store. Not sure how it could be much smaller and still qualify as a Coles Express. The attendant initially denied they had any $10 SIMs, and offered me a $30 one and then unlocked the drawer had a look and gave me a $10 SIM. Be nice to your local attendant.

        • I attended a store today a large Coles Express / Mini Supermarket that actually had a stack on the shelf for customers to grab themselves, I was quite surprised.

  • +2

I've had a lot of confused looks from attendants. Today the look of confusion was on my face. I went into a CE I went to last week and went straight to the ATM corner. It wasn't there. I think to myself, "Maybe I'm getting all the stores confused, it could be in another corner." I do a lap, nothing. I see the empty telephone port next to a stack of toilet paper. Apparently they replaced the ATM with a coffee machine. I was so baffled I forgot to ask for a $10 Optus SIM and walked out (I could've redeemed one of the spare vouchers I had).

  • I don't need the sim card so I got a free bottle of water. Was easy, checked my balance, got the voucher, took it to the counter with a bottle of coles water from the fridge, handed over the voucher. No need for scanning etc.

    • You might not have noticed the attendant scanning it or they might just have been slack.

  • Slack I guess - well he certainly didn't take the bottle from my hand to scan it, just said 'you're right'. Maybe he scanned the voucher after.

    • Not much point scanning the voucher unless he's got a bottle of water handy.

      • That's what I thought… I guess he got sick of scanning free water

  • Has anyone tried using this sim and seeing if it is possible to get 3 months free Netflix?

    • I doubt it. Optus state it needs to be a pre-paid device.

  • Anyone having issues getting stock of these sims? It seems almost impossible in Perth given that I am always told that there is no stock, or they dont keep stock

    • which ones have you tried?

      • +1

Mosman park, Claremont, North perth, jolimont (newly opened!), Wembley, west Perth. That's about it I think

        • ok. thanks for that. i'll try some others in the next few days. good to hear the Jolimont one is open again. went there a few weeks ago to get my free water and it was closed :(

        • @tdw: jolimont is ok for water, but no optus sims available.

    • In Melbourne I was told when a store had sold out that they receive a delivery every morning of 8-10 SIMs.

  • Anyone know if Coles Express normally carry the $10 Optus SIM as a regular stocked item.
Was out of stock nearly any time I asked.

    • Out of all the sites I've visited, only one had it.

    • Stocks could well be limited given the 6 month expiry on the two I've picked up so far from my local store a week apart. The same guy has reckoned twice now he doesn't have any, then checks the drawer and finds one.
      Yes, only 2, pathetic aren't I.

    • +1

Some stores don't stock them at all. Other stores have varying stock levels. That's from my experience in Melbourne. I drive a lot for work, I've found 5 stores that I pass regularly and regularly have stock. I pop in and grab two vouchers and redeem one for a SIM.

As the vouchers are no longer available at the ATM, I made sure I still have a stack of vouchers to redeem before the 22nd.

      • Cheers sween64.
I am in Melb too. Which stores have you found that do actually have them?
I still have the vouchers, as I barely got any SIMs.

        • +1

          Nunawading: corner Springvale and Maroondah.
Forest Hill: next to shopping centre on Canterbury Road.
Burwood: Burwood highway just east of Warrigal Rd
Ashburton: High St east of Sommerville
East Melbourne: Punt Road, north of Bridge Rd (didn't have stock last night though).

  • Great thanks :)
