IIRC Thecus' NAS software isn't as mature or pretty as QNAP or Synology offerings, still a good price.

"Delivery is $5 if required." and what exactly does this mean?

    • +2

my guess is that you can either pickup or if required - pay the $5 postage

      • Correct - thanks

  • Isn't an N40 / N54L a better NAS&price?

      two very different products.

the HP mini servers are for enthusiasts to build and requires OS knowledge.

this is like a QNAP/Synology NAS's where the OS is embedded with a user interface.

the HP's might be cheaper but for the majority of people - too hard to build and maintain. these standalone NAS boxes make things much easier and hence worth the extra

However once setup I don't think it would be too much issue. I Was originally looking at a synology nas unit.

Also another issue to lookout for is if you are going to use them as a media server of some sort. Processing power might be an issue

      • Installing FreeNAS on a (bootable) USB stick is hard for the majority of people? I guess that's a fair assessment.

        • To some, installing proper drivers is a major pain in the ass.

        • i tried getting freenas going a few weeks back. sure installation was easy but trying to identify a faulty disk was difficult. there's far too many options for the file system / raid and working what is best requires fairly complex knowledge.

these all in one raid boxes make it easy

      • N54L + Xpenology FTW

        • Will gen8 handle xpenology?

          @t25:

Runs on the 40/54L and the G8

gotta add RAM and then faff around with an OS, compared to simple plug and play with these AIO NASes.
