Free Cup of Water from McDonalds

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Well I am an ozbargainer - asked for a dollar water bottle (its only with HJ) then they replied sorry we do not have $1 water bottles - then my burger came with a large cup of water - for free. I don't like to drink soft drinks and normally buy a water bottle - this time I got my water for free.. ( i am sure five years back we wouldn't even think to "BUY WATER"…

        • Egypt is great for that too!

        • Yeah its norm in europe to pay to use. Just buy a soft serve or coffee and you'll get a pin on your docket. Key that in and ta da~!

Oh also remember you get to use their play equipment free too as opposed to paying to go into an indoor play centre. :P

You should post that, what an awesome bargain.

      Free gym "membership"

  • Appears not to be free. Requires purchase???

  • Price match at Officeworks?

It's a different situation with McDonald's in the US where the drink machine is generally not behind the counter (to allow for free refills and a diabetes epidemic). People abused the system, asking for a cup for water and then filling it with soft drink instead. Hence in the US, a cup costs.

    • I've never paid for water in the States. They usually have a smaller 8 oz or similar clear cup, as apposed to the McD, Subway or BK cup.

  • At least in Victoria, it is a legal requirement for restaurants to offer (tap) water for free i.e. without charge. So if you have food in any restaurant, you can request for 'free' water.

^ I pretty sure only if the premise sells alcohol. Otherwise, they don't need to offer you free water.

    • Link to legislation?

      • +1

Not the legislation, but the government body that administers it, which confirms Banana's point.

        • Agreed. but a restaurant license also have the same requirements

This is for a business license. At some point in my life, I did consider taking over a restaurant - but decided against it after long and painful realization that I don't have the capability to actually run the business

@stingy-oz: Or was it because you would have to pay for everyone's free water?

        • @tight-a55: LOL LOL! Water is expensive you know……i run risk of giving out free water and goes bankrupt..I'm now working in a waterless environment ;) LOL

        • @stingy-oz: this fits the username….

        • @stingy-oz:

and you intend to serve alcohol.

        • +1

          @sween64: And I did misread… :( I can't run a business.

        • @stingy-oz:

The license you linked are for restaurants serving alcohol, like pubs and actual restaurants. Not fast food restaurants like maccas and kfc. Thus, your link is irrelevant. Maccas and the like are not legally required to offer free drinking tap water.

  • Is this a joke post? Seriously where is OzBargain going with this sorts of posts.

Very soon, "Free Wi-Fi at McDonald's" will be on the front page.

    • Hahaha. EC will never live that one down :-)

Not sure why this was moved to the forums, it meets the deal posting guidelines

This would have been funny on April Fools.

  • butter is also free as well as well as ketchup, just ask for it after you collect your order

    • Butter, sauce and a cup of water. Now you've got a soup going.

  • not sure if troll or legit stupid dumbass

please don't be the second one.. the dumbass

Rarely buy bottled water. Buying petrol is cheaper than buying bottled water. $2 for 500ml of water is "400" in the petrol shop.

    • That's why I only drink petrol.

  • Water is water, some might say bottled water tastes better, but your body doesnt really care. BUT if i went to the back of my shed and scooped you some water from my rain bucket, don't complain if you dont like it ifyou're not a paying customer! I can drink it no probs!

  • off the topic, is ketchup free at MCs or KFC? anyone knows?

  • I remember McDonald's charging something like 30 cents for a cup, that they would fill with water for you (and ice), if you wanted.

  • I think this deal is only temporary to Celeberate the cricket world cup win because I remember that water was free when Australia previously won the world cup.

  • sorry i dont know how to imbed a pic but i saw this a few weeks ago at our maccas
you just have to wonder what led to the creation of the notice

  • Port Macquarie, NSW McDonalds won't give you a cup of water, they will only sell you a bottle of water.
They also do not have the coffee cards and won't honour them with the free coffee.
    Total cheapskate owners

    • Yeh not providing free tap water's bullshit and stingy.

coffee cards is understandable. I actually stole one of the stamps. back in my delinquent days

  • All the Maccas I've ever asked at only give water to old people who need to take medicine.

Penn & Teller and bottled water: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFKT4jvN4OE

    Speaks for itself.

  • The Mcdonalds at Mayfield near Newcastle in NSW charged me tea price for plain warm water for a babies bottle.

    • Not that you'd care what you pay to keep bubs happy, but that's pretty ordinary. I'd probably be a little vocal at the time if it happened to me!

  • But i think it's a different story with hot water. Last year when on a road trip to Sydney we were charged for hot water in a few fast food joints along Hume freeway, from 70c to as high as full cost of a cup of coffee.
