Free Cup of Water from McDonalds

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Well I am an ozbargainer - asked for a dollar water bottle (its only with HJ) then they replied sorry we do not have $1 water bottles - then my burger came with a large cup of water - for free. I don't like to drink soft drinks and normally buy a water bottle - this time I got my water for free.. ( i am sure five years back we wouldn't even think to "BUY WATER"…

    this is stupid.

water at macdonalds has always been free. and you can't compare bottled water to tap water

    • +6

Lol tight arses have no sense of humour

      • +11

I don't think the OP knows it has always been free with a purchase.

        • +21

You can get it without a purchase.

        • +2

          @Hieu:

When I worked there, some managers have said it's only free with a purchase, though rarely anyone actually enforces it, including other managers.

        • +2

@ozhunter: agree, the restaurant wouldnt be obliged to provide a non-customer a free cup of water but they most likely will anyway

        • +2

          @ozhunter:

The only time I enforced it was when I was working in a shopping court Maccas and I knew the teenage kids were having a water fight out the front.

        • @ozhunter:

It's been enforced everywhere I've ever tried recently with a minimum $1 (or $1.50) spend so you cant get away with just a soft serve.

I thought it used to be free but the first time it didn't work for me the girl at the counter said it was because they didn't classify as a restaurant anymore.. but from what I've read further down the thread that wouldn't matter.

        • +1

actually you don't even have to purchase anything you can just ask for water only and you would still get it, OPs major discovery is no deal and not worth mentioning.

        • @Hieu: Often they charge 30c for it if you don't order anything else.

        • @algy:

I've asked for dozens and never been charged - purchase or not.

        • @edwinlin88: Sometimes, I remember having to get my nan a cup of water for pills, took some explaining and they still only reluctantly gave it too me, note this was after we had our meal, so already made a purchase.
Also in general their water tastes like ass, the machines rarely get cleaned thoroughly and it is really evident when you drink unflavoured water.

        • @rain: the ass flavor comes from the ice

you can't compare bottled water to tap water

I'm sorry, is there some kind of special ingredient found in bottled water?

      • +1

Depending on the water quite the opposite, fewer ingredients.

      • +1

the convenience of having it in a chilled bottle?

      • +3

        Plastic residue

      • +21

Don't buy bottled water! It's full of a dangerous chemical called dihydrogen monoxide. It kills thousands of people every year.

        • +1

So does driving… But we still do it! ;)

        • +4

It's a Catch-22 though. If you don't drink it, you die anyway.

        • +2

I prefer bottled water that contains hydrogen hydroxide, with added hydric acid, hydroxic acid, hydroxyl acid, or hydroxilic acid.

Oh, and some oxidane for flavouring.

        • +23

I only drink and shower with Voss water.

        • @KuroNeko: Do U even OzB?

        • +3

          @KuroNeko:
I only poop in carbonated water in my gold dunny.
Nothing less will do for my turds.

        • +2

It kills thousands of people every year.

It is also a major component of acid rain.

        • I don't know if tap water is any better. Wouldn't you agree by the time from the plant to you, there is a possibility that it got contaminated many times already in its journey?

        • +1

          @love2buy:
I think you're onto something there. Did you know that over 70% of Australian homes had dihydrogen monoxide contamination in their water pipes? How this stuff hasn't been banned yet beggars belief.

Here is where you bottled water comes from: http://www.naturalnews.com/038840_dasani_tap_water_purified.…

Its a lucrative market: Run some tap water through a filter, bottle it and sell it thousands of time its price :)

      • +5

i dont buy bottled water because i believe the water is better. I buy it because I'm thirsty at a point in time and i want a chilled bottle I can carry around and then throw away when im done with it.

        i.e. buy for convenience.

      • +9

As more and more people wake up to the dangers of fluoride

made it impossible to read anymore of that article

      • If you are stupid and don't know it's just purified and the difference power to you. I know it isn't spring water and I live in Australia.

    • +1

you can't compare bottled water to tap water

Absolutely you can! They're are many different ways in which you can compare it; taste, clarity, contaminates, etc. But the best way for a group like us to compare it would be based on 'value'.
And personally speaking, I don't think bottled water comes anywhere near the value of tap water in our capital cities!

      • +2

i dont drink bottled water at home but buy bottled water a few times a week because I dont want to have to carry around a re-useable bottle.

but agree, of course drinking tap water is best value.

    • +2

Yeah that's right, tap water is a billion times better than bottled water.

      Seriously who buys bottled water?

      • +1

people desperately on the go with pockets full of money

        or

people still stuck in the twentieth century mindset aka my grandparents and some of my uncles and aunties (and some cousins maybe still unfortunately)

    • +1

Yeah we used to order free large McWaters all the time as students. That was even before the internet, let alone ozbargain

      • +1

You must have been a student quite a while ago.

The internet dates back to the 1960's

        • +1

And if the stories are true, OzBargain dates Back to the start of time (or 2006 if you're older then 9 years of age).

        • not 1994? O.O

        • @turkz1:

There's a timeline down the right hand side
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Internet#Precurs…

The military were using the internet before this from what I recall being taught (in 1998).

        • +1

@nismo: Yep I wouldn't expect too many former US Defence Advanced Research Agency (DARPA) employees that were involved in the use of the fledgling Internet for the US Ballistic Missile Defence System to be commenting here on the great debate between bottled or tap water…..but you never know!

        • 1990

    • Bottled water is tap water..

  • +1

Unless it also comes with ice, no bargain!

    • +2

      yes it comes with ice

      • +56

God damn cheap bastards diluting the water with ice!

      • How much for 1 oz of ice?

  • +2

Is it free though? or free with purchase?

    • +1

      This is not sure,,

      • Title is potentially horribly misleading.

This is OzB! I'm sure plenty are driving all over town to claim their free water. No doubt to Broden it

        • +1

No purchase required. been doing this for years. I feel like OzB deals have hit a new low with this one..

        • @Benjamin7711:
No worse than Dick Smith's "One Day Only" sales!

        • @ChickenTalon: Getting a cup of water a small cup of water is free. If you choose to get a medium or large meal with water you get bottled water.

    • +2

Free with purchase. I was once charged 20c for large water with ice with no purchase. About 8 years ago.

      • +1

Water free, but 20 cents for ice, cup and service?

        • Don't forget the straw and lid!

        • +1

@sween64: tissue as well and free newspaper to read, not to take.

  • I always ask for a cup of water when i buy at mcdo.

    • mcdo…. pinoy?

  • Here we go again…

  • +3

Prepare for the avalanche of "free water" deals.

You know you can also find many playgrounds and parks with FREE water from taps? no purchase required! Actually, that might warrant a neg, cheaper elsewhere.

  • +1

yeah.. Always been free at McDonalds. And healthiest thing on the menu.
Small and medium cups of water are free. They sometimes charge for a large cup though????

  • When you get your 'free' water at McDonalds in India or China, is it free of carcinogens?

    • +1

I wouldn't drink tap water in developing countries. In countries like Australia, I absolutely would (and do!) unless there is a specific issue.

  • +1

also bundle this with the free straw and tissues and then go to the outdoor play area and play skirmish.

    Bargain !!

  • +4

now waiting for similar deal to be posted for hungry jacks and kfc

    • +5

I was waiting for you to post it :p

Maybe mix it up and put free napkins/straws as the deal.

      • +2

lets be honest……free kfc moist towelette would be a deal……

  • Bring your own cup for some tap water?

  • +4

Was about to comment that all restaurants must supply free tap water under law but after searching for this legislation, I've come to realise I am wrong.

If the venue is licensed to serve alcohol, then they must provide free tap water however I did not find anything in regards to non-licensed restaurants.

    • +1

I thought the same thing. We can't both be wrong?

    • +1

I guess that falls under Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA).

  • +2

serious mate? as i know water is free there from last 7 years.

  • Is this mineral water or tap water? Because I am all against mineral exploitation.

    • Yeah, who needs minerals anyway, wait what?

  • +1

what about salt? sugar? tomato sauce!!!!!!!!!
    straws
    napkins

  • +2

Pffft Real Ozbargainer has upside-down umbrella +straw.
Can be a bit if a wait for the rain though.

    • +2

edit: straw they got for free from maccas, and an umbrella they borrowed on the way out.

  • +1

There's no point reporting idiotic and rubbish deals like this anymore so I might as well upvote the crap instead!

Oh OzBargain, what have you become…

    • You can, but if we're able to individually list every item that comes from a store giving a % off, than why not this?
      Ps. I agree!!!

  • Water has always been free at Maccas! I have never paid for a cup of water at maccas! when i saw this post i thought it was a humorous joke!

  • +1

I hope it is not yellow water.

  • +1

Funny story: we rock up to a McDonald's drive-through one night and ask for soft serves. They tell us that there's no ice cream - either they had packed up the machine or were refilling it. "Is there anything else I can get you?" comes the voice from the speaker, to which my friend replies, "that's okay, can I get 2 cups of free water instead?"

McDonald's: the only place where you'd dare to get nothing but free water from the drive-through.

  • Water is free out of taps everywhere.

  • +1

Also don't forget you get to use the toilet free without any purchase. .

    • -1

Don't they charge at some places?

      • +3

        Funny you should say that…
I've not seen places over here charge for toilet use, but I have seen some lock the doors and only allow paying customers the right to use it!
Throughout Europe it's quite the norm to pay for toilet use!

        • +1

In parts of Asia you get charged to buy a small pack of tissues as you go in, otherwise there ain't no paper!
