Semco 83CO Sewing Machine at Spotlight for $79 (RRP $199)

70

Saw these outside Spotlight Indooroopilly (QLD) this morning and it looked as though quite a few had already been taken off the pile. Took a pic in case it was a one-off but got home to find them on their website for the same price so it must be nation-wide. Couldn't see them in any of the current catalogues though.

I'm definitely not into sewing but know that some of these Spotlight cheapies are good for basic work and/or beginners so I hope this helps someone run something up :)

Have a feeling these may only stay at this price until tomorrow though so best to act quickly!

Not sure about stock, but Aldi has a Singer brand sewing machine in their current catalogue (started 11 April 2015) for $99.99:

I don't know anything about sewing, but I'm assume Semco is a random/house brand? Might be worth the extra $20 for the Singer brand and 3 year warranty?

Cool info GG. Funnily enough I bought my wife one of an entry-level Singer as an emergency replacement when her proper machine failed and needed to go in for a service. It was only $99 at DealsDirect or some other online retailer and although very basic it's a great little machine! The ALDI one looks like the next model up so yeah good value for $99 and as you say with the extra warranty maybe it's better than the Spotlight one… but only if you can find one I suppose ;)

I'd say a lot of these lower-end machines are just pumped out from the same factory though then just badged with 'whatever'.

I bought a Semco (a different model) for my mom 3 months ago from Spotlight, after using it a few times it was making some funny noise and stopped working. Took it back to Spotlight and they said they had to send it back to the manufacturer to see if they will repair or replace it. Now it's 3 weeks still haven't heard from them. The Singer from Aldi looks pretty good, I also saw a Singer sewing machine for $99 at Coles a few weeks ago (after I took the faulty Semco to Spotlight for repair). Not sure if it's the same model as the Aldi one but at least you know if something goes wrong Aldi and Coles will just replace the unit or refund you the money.

didnt know spotlight's after sale service is so cheap. thanks for sharing.

    • Just called up the store to see what's happening to the sewing machine and they said the machine is still sitting at the store waiting to be looked at by the manufacturer!

Aldi is selling the Singer Promise 1412.

Reviews are good except for the fact that it is quite fiddly and unclear on how to correctly thread.

I bought one yesterday and followed the manual but still think I've done it wrong!

The 60 day satisfaction guarantee is a big selling point for something that people may have trouble woth, then choose to return.

Sorry to read about the hassles with this Spotlight one. I recommend googling local reviews first since there are always people who chat about sewing machines.

Thanks for the feedback since someone else will surely benefit from your story.

  • What about this one -

Spotlight selling for $249 and it is on $99 here:
    http://www.sewingmachines.com.au/elna-2000-sewing-machine.ht…

    • That one comes up at Spotlight quite regularly for $99. By far their best value for money special lately was the Elna Elina 40 for $269 a couple of weeks back. It's a great little machine and will handle bulky material that a lot of others balk at.

I personally wouldn't touch a Semco or the cheap singer from Aldi. Singer is no longer the reliable machine it used to be, even in some of their more expensive models.

I haven't heard of a single Semco owner who didn't regret the purchase.

  • IS this one any better than BROTHER one that was on sale while back?
