Hello OzBargainers!

Over here at PickPals we're ready for another sale! This time we've got a pretty interesting item for you: A clear practice lock. With this lock you can directly see the pins you are manipulating and learn how the internals of the lock function and work on improving your feel and technique. The clear practice lock comes with three keys, two cut to match the lock and one blank, these will allow you to see the action of the lock with a real key and a key that doesn't fit.

As with our previous sales, we are also selling the PickPals Introduction set at $20 (20% off our normal price). The PickPals introductory set comes with three picks (a rake, half diamond and a feeler) and two tension wrenches (a sprung wrench and a duel ended euro & standard wrench). You will receive these in a durable leather pouch.

A common question asked is why purchase our picks over the $5 sets manufactured in China. The reason quite simply is quality. Our picks are made of premium SouthOrd steel and are shaped for optimal feedback & efficiency. PickPals was founded once we realised the difficulty and delays in getting good quality lockpicks for a reasonable price in Australia, we stand by the quality of all products we sell and will never provide a product that we wouldn't be happy using.

The Law & Common Sense
We provide these items legally, but you need to be aware of the law governing possession of such items. This document outlines it very well, read from page 17 onwards.

We recommend using these for hobbyist/locksport purposes within your own home only and on locks you legally own but are not in use. Picking your front door lock is not a smart idea as you may damage or break the lock causing extreme inconvenience, not to mention the cost of getting a locksmith to fix your mistakes.

I'm thinking about picking one of these up, however I might have to keep it under lock and key once I get it

Hi There, You are 100% right, there are a lot of cheaper options and these can be good to get started with. What I can say is that ours are better quality than what you'll find on DX.

The metal on those picks is actually quite a bit thicker than ours, which makes it hard to use on some smaller locks. Additionally the metal they use doesn't have the same "feedback" ours does, essentially with ours you can feel the movement of the pins in the lock quite a bit better than you can with the DX sets.

Finally, it really depends on the set you order, but in the cheapest DX sets they don't come with a decent rake, which ours has :)

I've owned cheap picks, and I've also got a set from pickpals, there really is a difference that makes it worth skipping the cheap junk if you are serious about learning the fine art of picking!

Easiest way to answer to that is check out Pickpals previous listings… and the comments they've received!

Are we firing on all cylinders? Or on a barrel roll? Or just raking it in?

Link to the document on legality seems to be missing??

    • Well spotted! We have fixed up the link :)

Time to get off the fence and grab some… Questions:
Would there be any benefit in getting the 9 pce set? Are the extras worth learning or likely to be used by a beginner?
And likewise for the pocket set; apart from its compact size, would it be as good as the 9 pce to use?

    • +2

      Hey there!

Sorry it took a while to get back to you - here's some answers to your questions :)

The 9 piece set just contains a couple of extra picks (extra feelers, rake) that the intro set doesn't contain. In terms of whether a beginner would benefit more from having these - probably not. If you're out to learn the basics then you'll get by fine with just the intro set. The pocket sets don't have all the same feelers as the 9 piece, but you do get the added benefit of having a handy form factor. We have found from experience that the pocket set offers slightly less feedback which might not be so great for beginners, as less feedback means you're not going to be able to feel the pins hit the sheer line as easily.

If you're looking to get into things at a beginner level, grab an intro set and if you're enjoying it, pick up an expansion set (also available on our website) and expand your collection :)
