I "came" here for this comment.

  • How easy is it to install an aftermarket head-unit (with/without speakers)? I've been looking for one for a while so I can play music off my phone, but I'm intimidated by the installation. Is it worth paying someone to hook it up for me, and if so, where?

    I drive a VW Golf Mk4.

It's just a matter of knowing how to pull apart your dash and fitting it in and connecting with a wiring harness (connects the wires from the car to the rear of the head unit). There should be some information online on how to pull apart your dash. You would have to buy a wiring harness separately as it is not usually included.

you should be able to pick up a kit on ebay which contains everything you need (loom converters and a fascia trim piece if required). You just might have to tell the ebay seller which brand stereo you have purchased so they can include the right looms

    • I've recently done an installtion my Nissan. Pioneer is common so adapters for the head unit are easy to come by. Adapter for the car can be harder to get right. Plus you may need a converter for the ariel and in my case I also needed a plastic pocket. By the time you pay for that it comes to at least $50 bucks plus you get the thrill of maybe breaking the plastic in your car, losing screws and needing a chiropractor to fix your neck/back after crawling around under the dash.

I got my first adapters from JB and because the parts are generically labelled they gave me the wrong ones and I wasted a fair bit of time going back and forth. Finally got the right bits from Autobarn.

If you are not confident then easier to pay the $80 to get it installed by a professional.

      • Just have a crack at taking your dash off, but be careful. It's really not that hard and you can find detailed guides for pretty much every car on Google.
It's really satisfying and the wiring loom adapters save you from having to do anything electrical.
        Give it a go!

        • Just watched a youtube on installing into the MK4. It's not too bad actually. For my Nissan I had to pullout the entire centre console as well as a fair bit of the dash and also disconnect the wiring around the 4WD Hi/Lo selector - my rear cigarette lighter socket still doesn't work for some reason. Anyway - gave me a good chance to vacuum up all the crumbs caused by using the Hungry Jacks bought with discount vouchers from Ozbargain. Good luck with your project

        • @freesteakknives: Some cars are super easy to get to the stereo. My Nissan Pulsar is a bit of a nightmare and I actually did crack the dash above the speedo trying to get to it. Each piece off fascia was under another piece.

However my brother's Camry was so easy, it was just one peice

        • @theguyrules:

Ah what a pain. My Fairmont was super easy. Love that car..

    • Very simple mate, you just need a wiring harness for you car (golf 4). Then a harness for the brand of stereo (I.e pioneer) then it's just plug and play.

Other than figuring out how to take your original head unit out. It's very simple and most car models are on YouTube.

Yeah, I already bought one and installed it without any major issues. I got a Sony one instead (bit cheaper, no speakers, similar other features, but also had a CD slot).

        Cheers, though!

Installed. Thanks OP. Just doubled the value of my 120Y
