Just in time for the taxi strike.

    • +4

Yeah, the timing couldn't be better. Taxi drivers have had it too easy for too long. Too many foreigners who don't know the streets and are difficult to communicate with.

I've used Uber a fair few times and each time I've been picked up in a spotless and late model car, the driver has been friendly and no detours to my destination. The only drawback is that sometimes the wait time is longer than what a regular taxi would be.

Taxi drivers have had it too easy for too long.

        Really? How is that?

        • +3

A state-backed, heavily regulated monopoly/cartel creating an uncompetitive and expensive industry?

        • +3

          @herzy:

So you're saying Taxi drivers have it easy and are highly paid?

Do you know what the average taxi driver earns per hour???? You get paid more working at Maccas…

        • @herzy:

To be fair, they aren't exactly state-backed, rather the state makes the laws and charges HUGE amounts for permits/licenses (up to $380,000). Uber is a great service, but it is fair to see why the taxi industry is frustrated and should seek compensation from the government

  • Have yet to use Uber in Perth, but have used Uber in Sydney, Melbourne, overseas in HK and China, and have absolutely no complaints. Drivers are always courteous and efficient, but does sometimes take a while to request(up to 10mins) especially in peak times.

I love Uber as much as the next person and I take it regularly, but I can't help but feel a bit sorry for the drivers.

Since the 20% cut, they can make barely minimum wage after expenses (not including depreciation).
The one's I've ridden with have said they haven't noticed an increase in customers.
I give my drivers a small tip each time.

Uber treats it's drivers pretty poorly as there will always be a supply of drivers willing to drive.

    • +1

Yeah I'm a bit concerned at how Uber treats its drivers. The pay rates seem to be low and to me it seems like they're treated as a dispensable resource.

    Used uber in Perth once.

Guy rocked up a new car, with a bottle of water and fantales waiting for me.

As for the taxi strike - Won't this just encourage more people to use uber and demand it?

For those who aren't in Perth.. Use the code IKNOWSAM or IHATEMAX for 50$ (one of them is 30 and one is 50, not sure which one. You can always change the code). ENJOY!!

    • +5
    • Does the code have restrictions? Or can be used anytime?

      • These are only sign up codes and applicable for the first time. Better to use the referral codes for this deal though since you'd be giving somebody free $10.

    • IHATEMAX is $30 off only works in Perth
IKNOWSAM is $20 off and works Australia wide. It used to be $50 off.

Used Uber for the first time last saturday. Had a great trip to the casino, and a average one back home from there. No complaints. Can't help but wonder why some people do this for a living though, the guy made barely enough to pay for a pint of beer at a bar in Perth.

  • I've used Uber twice and it was good both times, meanwhile my taxi experiences have been very mixed but generally poor.

  • I have used uber three times in Perth and each time it has been great.

  • Dont forget to combine it with $30 off first ride for perth

  • I used this deal the other day. When I checked the journey - UBER estimated $6 - $7 but it came in at $11.50. No skin off my nose as it was still within the $20 so it cost me nicks. I wondered if the driver was 'gaming' the system by starting the meter before collecting me? Do people find the fare estimate is close to the actual fare most of the time?

Heard the GM of Uber on the radio this morning - the bloke is a charlatan

I support innovation and the taxi industry has got fat and lazy - providing an overpriced service

However Uber avoids GST, avoids licensing and provides no safety net to consumers.

Simply they shouldn't be on the road and the GM takes people out of context to sound legitimate

Hopefully the outcome out of all of this is we do get a regulated service and then Uber and other competitors can operate legally - however right now they shouldn't be on the road and are making a mockery of the laws.

    • +1 for the word "charlatan"

And yeah its kinda scary how they just "be" but then the Dept of Transport and some of the drivers have brought this on themselves -
and Taxi scene in Perth needed a shake up badly.

  • Tried it and it seems that the receipt is showing that my CC is charged? Anyone else has the same issue?

    • Yup. One of my friends. Will probably call the customer care and let you know how it goes.

  • Signed someone up last night and we caught a black car home free. X cars are cheaper and the driver told me that black cars get less service as they cost more. Registered maybe? It was $30 for our fare instead of $13 and we got an inbox for $0. If you are getting a fare for free, try and support the black car drivers.
