  • It was down to $624 a few weeks ago FYI.

Pretty sure it's been down to $599 before. Even if it's a good TV still at its current price point, just doesn't feel like a bargain anymore. :/

I should have kept some of those December Aussie dollars :-( It's no consolation knowing that, on a global basis, it's probably still as cheap.

  • Lets face it the TV stations cant even get normal HDTV right so 4K ultra HD is a waste of time unless you want to wait a millennium or more for it to appear in any quantity.

    • Well if you have Netflix and unlimited NBN FTH you'll have some content. I'd guess that's a rather small market though!

    • The reviewer I posted below loved it as a gaming monitor!!

I cant say that's great. The TV only supports a crippled version of HDMI 2.0 (4K @ 60hz chroma 4:2:0) which is a quartered bandwidth of full HDMI 2.0. Not saying that's a deal breaker but if someone folk out that much $ to get a hdmi 2.0 capable PC he (it's not gonna be a she let's be honest) might as well buy a true hdmi 2.0 TV to be future proofed.

I intend to get a monitor - rather than pay once again for tuners, of which I now have many in STBs, recorders and the like, and a dedicated underpowered low memory/storage expansionless computer trying to pump its heat out against the ambient temperature of the screen :-(. I can put better "smarts" on with a $43 rasberry. The Philips for $257 more looks better value…

    • UHD blu-rays are coming out end of the year, H265 and HDMI 2.0 will be widely adopted by manufactures at the time. That's when true 4K era starts. It's not now but it wouldn't be much longer either.

Comes with the usual Dick Smith garbled set of specifications - one review gives them here:

    http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2014/12/lg-40ub800t-ultra-hd-tv-au…

"For external inputs and onboard outputs, the LG 40UB800T sits in the middle of the road. It has three HDCP 2.2-compatible HDMI 2.0 ports, capable of 3840×2160 pixels resolution at a 60Hz refresh rate, along with breakout inputs for both component and composite A/V. 3.5mm analog audio input is joined by SP/DIF optical audio output, and external media comes in courtesy of the aforementioned Wi-Fi or wired LAN port, or one of the two USB 2.0 or single USB 3.0 ports. Along with a digital TV antenna jack, of course."

There is a good discussion here, along with the price last December:-/

Bought one at Good Guys Dubbo at end of Feb for $630 as a monitor.
Could not get it to display 4K at 60hz despite laptop saying it was available.
At 30hz, the level of lag made it unusable!

I returned it and now they have it on clearance for $600.
Anyone paying over $700 needs to look around more…

    • It's very likely that your laptop can playback 4k@60 videos but cannot output such refresh rate through HDMI/DP. As far as I know there is no laptop at this point supports HDMI 2.0.

      • Here's my laptop specs: http://shopap.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/t44…
The 'Graphics' section seems to suggest 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz via Mini DP cable but happy to be proven wrong.

Don't be mistaken, its a lovely piece of kit as a TV - just not as a monitor.
And the neg is for the price, not the product.

As you said it yourself. 60Hz via Mini DP. The TV has no mini DP port. Also, most Mini DP to HDMI don't support full HDPC 2.2

          @vsynca: This.

        • +1

@vsynca: ^ Was going to google the same thing

      • There are a few laptops, and a few more desktops, that can output full 4K@60, but only over DP, not over HDMI. So no, this wouldn't work with a TV that only has HDMI, but no DP.

        • I honestly dunno what the hold up is for HDMI2.0 on laptop/tablets. They announced the specs ages ago and they are at war with DisplayPort. Lucky for them only Panasonic TVs offer DPs otherwise HDMI 2.0 might never see the day of light. I wanted to upgrade my HTPC long time ago to be 4k ready but the lack of hdmi 2 is a deal breaker.

        • @maxhu: Probably didn't fit into the release schedules of the hardware manufacturers to do HDMI 2.0. My HTPC does quite well with 4K at your usual 23.98fps, but there's no point upgrading until Skylake. Looking forward to full hardware support for HEVC and HDMI 2.0.

        • @daerka: I actually prefer fanless boxes and hoping Core M or an Atom x7 would do it. I am currently running a custom built Celeron J1900 as an HTPC/Download Box/Cloud/VPN and can't complain.

Seems like they can with H264 but H265 can only do 30fps

        • @maxhu: I've got an Asus Chromebox and I can't hear the fan unless I put my ear right on it. Does 4K H.264 up to 30fps, doesn't do 4K H.265. 1080P HEVC is generally fine. Actually got a NUC 2.0 as desktop replacement and it's a lot quieter than the first NUC, kind of hoping a Skylake NUC will be just about right for me. We'll see.

Edit: Yes, sorry, I know this has nothing to do with the LG TV anymore. lol

        • Was thinking of purchasing a GTX960 for mine but the reviews for the card aren't too flash.

  • Got the 49 inch version. No regrets so far. Very nice pic quality.
