This thing has a pen :) which is nice if one likes to draw and sketch things
it also has 2G ram which is way way way better than the 1GB version.

Also comes with a full Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student license (not the 1 year 365 subscription like some tablets)

yes thats right but the 365 gets you latest version of Office in 2016 with all features like Access that one may not need (LOL) if you had that subscription with you, so if one managed to get any version of 365 for 30 dollars AUD or so, it works out more worth it.

    • yes that's right but the 365 loans you latest version..

Fixed it for you. At first I wondered why this was a bargain - then I saw the full office and the Watcom digitser. I have used open and Libre office since they were both part of Star-office, and have never had problems collabarating with MS Office users, but for those in the MS ecosystem, this is a good deal. No HDMI or GPS is a bit of a let down, but 1.8GHz atom, IPS Wireless N and Miracast keep it in consideration for me. The Win vs Android comparison is against a Note, rather than a Tab…

It does have a dedicated broadcom GPS module!

        • That's good - it wasn't in the specs on the Asus site - the initial part commenting on the office version was a response to a version of a comment no longer there by the time I posted.! My attempt to edit failed. :-/

i had the troublesome Toshiba counter part of this thing for 199 back last year, it has HDMI, which i can easily turn it into a full system by hooking it to a TV or LCD adding a logic tech keyboard mice pack, but sadly Toshiba drop the ball big time by failing the wifi connection department and update firmware for it.
These win 8 inch tablets are Great for kids and for going around travelling with real PC power at disposal.
i got a free office 365 personal from another dirt cheap win box, which is not bad, given I am capable of using ipad/android version of office and the one cloud sync all my work, I can still use Office 2007 at primary PC with the service.

        • I hadn't considered Displaylink, as I've been out of the Windows ecosystem for some time now. It has it's limitations, as shown here:

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el8xxwycnnU

but almost addresses the "no HDMI" problem. It does still tie up the single USB port tho :-/ I guess there are a few warehouses full of these tablets to move before we slowly stir and start muttering about USB3.

        • @terrys:

yeap yeap, we want USB 3 infused version of Atom powered 8 inch at this price.

but i dont think thats gonna happen for another 6 to 9 months.

I already had a Samsung Activ 11 inch that has a pen, otherwise I would get this for the pen

Bring on something like Surface 3 but with lower res screen :p

    • I love the wacom pen, it offers palm rejection and pressure sensitivity.
Makes life so easier when you wanna write, not type.

I feel like I am self promoting a little, but I checked that it's still better than best price on staticICE.

  • I bought one of these a few months ago from OO - a great little tablet with the wacom stylus but there are a couple if eccentricities with this model you need to get used to,

    1. You may continually get a "limited connectivity" problem with wifi, the solution seems to be to open services.msc and restart the network location monitor (there are other online solutions which I am yet to try, but this works for me)

    2. There is a problem with the voltage regulator (I think) on may of them which stops them charging whilst plugged in - if this happens and the unit doesn't switch on (all you get is a fast flashing orange light on the on button) - the trick is to plug it into a very low power source such as a low power usb port on your computer rather than a 240v-usb transformer and leave it a couple of hours - once it has enough power to switch on it seems to charge from a higher power source again.

    • How's the battery life- there are mixed reviews and it would be great to hear from someone who's had the tablet for a while, and is the brightness really as bad as some say? Thanks

      • I get a whole day of use out of it which probably equates to 3 odd hours of active use browsing, adding to spreadsheets, email and a few games at lunchtime - My daughter uses it a lot in the car and gets through about 4 hours of movies.

What I like on mine (can't speak for them all) is that it hangs on for a long time when the battery gets low… my Samsung phone and tablet seem to drain from 20% to 5% really fast with use, the Asus goes and goes for ages.

  • If anyone's getting this, consider investing little bit on Wacom pens as well (the stylus that the tablet comes with is awful, my brother broke his within 2 days of usage). Though I have to admit that my brother is fairly clumsy and always breaks stuff.

I recommend Surface Pro 1 pen (if you can find one).
