lol I bought one of these for my overseas trip recently. In the end I couldn't even keep my 30kg~ bag still while dangling off the hook on this device to get an accurate measurement. I clearly don't lift enough.

Protip: Once you have it reasonably steady, press the tare button to zero the scales out and put the bag down. You'll have a negative read-out of your bag weight. Much easier to drop the negative sign off the front of the result than to try to read it while you're wrangling with your 30kg suitcase. If you're worried that you can't hold it steady enough, repeat the process a few times and average it out - you'll get pretty close!

I've had quite a bit of experience with these type of scales - they are awful!

    1) Batteries always go flat when you need them. CR2032 batteries are expensive and can be difficult to find overseas.
    2) You can't hang this on something else then hang your bag under it. It's very useful to have a scale that can be hooked over a door or a clothes rail, so you can then hang the bag off it. The bag won't wobble, and if the bag is lopsided or top-heavy it won't hit you while it's swinging around. I've had bruises from trying to weigh a suitcase with this type of scale, and the suitcase swung off the thin scale hook and whacked me in the leg. Then I was in pain my entire trip.
    3) It's much easier to hang a bag off a scale that gives a live reading, as you can keep adding things until you reach the check-in or carry-on limit. If you buy a digital scale like this that just gives you one reading then beeps, you'll have to add something, then lift the entire bag again to weigh it to see if it's overweight, then put it down and add/subtract items, lift entire bag to weigh it again, repeat ad-nauseum. Then when your wife says "oh, I forgot to put my make-up bag in my suitcase, can I put it in yours?" you'll have to do it all again.

You're much better off buying a cheap non-digital $5 scale from Reject Shop, a bargain basement store, or from eBay.

I've bought a very similar one off eBay (for about $8.50) and my experience is quite different.

      1) I cannot disagree with you that CR2032 batteries are not easy to find. I just bring it with me when I go overseas - both the scale and CR2032. They are not big/heavy, and it costs about $2 on eBay. This is just about preparation.
      2) True, but sometimes you need to forego functionality for portability/convenience. And you can't do this with a normal scale either. In fact, what product can you do it with?
      3) Same as above. But to respond directly, you're still going to be removing it, adding stuff, going back on the scale, and repeating it until you reach the desired weight, so this is not a problem exclusive to these portable scales.

I should have been clearer - I wouldn't recommend normal stand-on scales, it's difficult to read them and hold a heavy suitcase at the same time. But you can buy non-digital luggage scales that you can hang bags and luggage from. Here's a good one here, I have one almost identical (just without the pretty colours) and have been using it for at least 7 years:

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BoyzToys-RY459-Gone-Travellin-Del…

It'll weigh up to 34kg, and has a measuring tape built in. I saw them for sale today at the Reject Shop in Bondi Junction, NSW for $5.

You can hang it from something, hang your luggage at the bottom, and it'll give you a reading. You don't have to keep lifting the bag and putting it down. No batteries to go flat, don't have to carry spares. It weighs almost nothing. I've seen them for sale for around the $5 mark in many discount stores.

Many stores also sell things like this, which is similar but the smaller hooks might be problematic:
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Luggage-Fishing-Pocket-Spring-Bal…

If you really do want to go digital you can still get ones that hang from something:

I don't see why it's beneficial to have a digital scale, especially when you have to carry spare batteries around for it. But each to their own. People think they are more accurate or something, but if you've tried weighing your bags at different check-in counters at an airport, you'll find they are all different too! Sometimes I've been overweight on one counter, so I said I'd re-pack my bag, but I just walked along to the next counter which registered a half-kilo less weight and they let me through!

  • Yep, I agree, just use a regular scale and weigh yourself holding the luggage, then again without luggage, then simple math….

Thats good in theory….. but only if you have access to a regular scale. Not being a smart ass, but when i'm travelling around, I dont usually carry a full size scale with me.

      • Point taken. I was thinking for home, but you are right, I don't take my scales on holidays either.

similar device was 10 last year at Aldi then drop to 7 before sold out.

    • Aldi one has worked well for me although the display sometimes flickers

  • no stock in SA :(

    • There was stock in Golden grove and Elizabeth when I checked 2 minutes ago, and I didnt buy one.

      • Hmm not anymore. Anyone want to buy one and post to me?

  • cheaper than kogan

I personally use and recommend these eBay cheapies That link is just the current cheapest eBay seller of them but if for whatever reason you don't like that seller there are 100 others.

I found it fairly accurate, usually you get to the airport and they weigh your bag in front of you, it always comes out the same as what I weighed at home. The battery also lasts a long time (I haven't had to change the battery in the few years I've used it).

    • Ive used these cheapies for years, and just picked up this Korjo one.
Now the Korjo is definitely higher quality and ergonomic. I have 2 of the cheap ebay ones, and they give different readings about 100grams off per 20kg which is reasonable.

I will however, continue to use the cheapies rather than the korjo, because its smaller, lighter, and the hook at the bottom folds in compact. The korjo is actually bulky with the straps and hook dangling around which may get caught on my other stuff. something to consider.

Local prices for these things are a big rip. Somewhere between $3 and $7 is the 'right price' for luggage scales.

That's what makes this brandname scale at $11.5 a bargain!
