Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is fun

    • Yeah I platinum'ed the vanilla PS3 version. Enjoyed it a lot though it was tough.

      • Do you play for trophies?

        • +2

If I enjoy a game enough to finish it and am still having fun with it than yes, I'll try and clear the trophies to prolong it unless they are grindy multiplayer one's like Tombraider or Assassins Creed.

        • @Where's_That_Cake: NIce. When i enjoy a game i finish it but don't ever care about trophies. hehe

        • +5

@varunsic: Yeah each to their own, I find they add another element to a game if they're good trophies. They can make you try to do things that the game doesn't call for otherwise. Some are fun, others are $***house :)

        • @Where's_That_Cake: Very true. I read that you finished bloodborne on whirlpool, is it worth buying or wait till it gets cheaper?

        • +2

@varunsic: Bloodborne? Hell yeah, best game of the generation so far!

        • @varunsic: Yeah, great game. I'm going back to that for another run through and the plat soon :P

        • +1

@Phreakuency: Will definitely get it then. I am very hyped about the new mad max game. Watch the video

        • @Where's_That_Cake: I hear that this game is bloody hard, best of luck with the trophies ;)

        • @Where's_That_Cake: Whilst I was aware trophies existed, I didn't even know attempting platinum was a thing until dudes in my clan did it on Destiny. A lot of commitment involved in that.

        • @timohill: The thing with the Destiny plat is there is only one hard trophy "Flawless Raider" and that is not (now) difficult since you can overlevel the first raid by quite a bit ie complete a level 26 mission with a level 32 character. Peoples skill helps but most important is their internet connections, if one is laggy it makes it crap for everyone.

I am at the other end of the trophy/game spectrum; trophies decide if I will play the game or not.

        • +2

          @Where's_That_Cake:
Same here pretty much, I loved Prototype so I went for the platinum after finishing it and I've done that since.
I never get it when people play stuff like Hannah Montana just for easy trophies… but whatever makes them happy I guess haha.

        • @Phreakuency:

Just picked up a PS4 today for blood borne :D

Anyone know the best place to get PS plus for an AU's PSN account?

        • +1

@oldskoolbreakz: Any specific reason you want AU PS+?

  • +13

Wait. So if I'm not wrong we're getting, indie game, indie game, indie game, indie game, indie game, each averaging probably around $10 since some of them are on Steam as well. Not a great line-up for May if you ask me, not saying the games can't be entertaining, but at least not great value-wise.

    • +4

Really? You're paying like a $1 per game with a year subscription, I would say that's very good value.

      • -4

I can get most of these indie games from Humble for less than $1. PS+ is just pushing shovelware rubbish the last couple months. I would not be surprised to learn the person picking the PS+ titles has pink hair.

        • The "person" (probably a team actually) picking the PS+ titles is probably given X amount of money to spend, and they've gone round the gamedevs/publishers, and this is what they can get for that money. I doubt their hair colour comes into it - totally unnecessary comment. Further down, you talk about people downvoting you as "Real mature" but consider the maturity of suggesting that the hair colour of an imaginary person you've never met has something to do with why you disagree with what they may or may not have done.

It's fine for you (or anyone else) to think the service isn't of value to you. The value of these things is different for different people.

AAA games on consoles cost money. I suspect subscribers got more AAA games in PS+ a few years ago because the PS3 was struggling against the Xbox 360 in western markets and Sony had to come up with ways to make it appealing. I don't know for sure but I very much doubt the PS+ subscriptions fully paid for all those free AAA games - I imagine at least some part of it was marketing cash.

With the new generation of consoles, PS4 seems to be doing better (relatively) and I expect Sony have decided they don't need to tip as much marketing $$ into stuff like free PS+ games. That and making PS+ a requirement for PS4 multiplayer (which I agree you can debate the merits of but that's another story). Just a theory of course, but it makes more sense to me than "lol hair colour".

As you've hinted at, I think if you are really $-value-focused, you should forget about consoles and totally just play PC games - you can buy so many AAA games of yesteryear (and other stuff) in an online sale for way cheaper than any console system I know about. Also there's the modding scene, free games, humble bundles, blah blah blah. If your main concern is $$ spent, PC is more flexible and better value all around.

        • +1

I agree. PSN Subscription is no longer worth it you don't get any AAA titles anymore…

For casual gamers is not worth it, just buy games when they are on discounts.

      • +3

Of course it is still good value. But isn't it fair I'm allowed to compare it to itself in the past (when I signed up), which back then was even greater value? I am one of those who consider it such good value that I have two active PS+ subscriptions in separate regions.

        • +6

Ok, well I don't think it's good value anymore. I signed up because I saw the previous years games on the Wikipedia page. But I've had it now for 6 months and the only game that was worth anything was Batman. Instead I've received lots of indie game rubbish that I play for 5 minutes and then delete. And I could have got Batman on steam for $5.

I won't be renewing. Just made up my mind. Waste of money. Could have bought 10 decent titles on steam, rather than 50 worthless indie titles on PS+.

        • +5

@nhand42: If you bought PS+ JUST for the games you were doing it wrong and it's your own fault. Crying here isn't going to help.

        • +1

Not crying. Discussing the value of a subscription service that under delivers.

Keep downvoting me though. Real mature.

        • +4

@Phreakuency: well… that IS the point of PS+.. you're subscribing to receive new games each month.. and at the end of it.. those games get removed..

        • +2

@Vladdo: On PS4 I subscribe to play online, on the PS3 I subscribe so the console would auto update and sync my saves. Yes, initially I subscribed for the games but in the end I had more games than I knew what to do with and 90% of them I had no interest in. I was just adding the games to my account and never downloading them, I was still shelling out for the games I actually wanted rather than hoping they would be on PS+ in a couple of years only to find the online is completely dead.

Games is A point of PS+, but not THE only point.

        • +2

It really depends what you use PS+ for. If you play multiplayer games (GTA, COD, Battlefield, Fifa) it is a necessity if not, then not worth it just for free games.
However, generally there will be 1 really good game (guacamelee, in this case but a controller is a necessity) with the rest just being timewasters, still fun but may not have much depth.

I personally haven't had ps+ in a while because I don't play multiplayer and play most on PC nowadays. The example you used is also single player only and generally these games play better/easier on console than on PC.

tl;dr Get PS+ for multiplayer, the games are just a bonus, otherwise play on PC, the games are cheaper.

        • +1

@nhand42: Hi, is suggesting the person responsible for picking these games hair color is pink mature?

        • @nhand42:

I agree with you. Some people want good titles to play with money spent on PSN+, for PS3 there's not much point subscribing because multiplayer is free.

Sony is smart not to give away decent titles anymore because they know PS4 have to subscribe for multiplayer.

At the end of the day ppl pay for what they think its value for money. So there's not much point arguing.

If you tell me there's a high percentage of people paying for PSN+ for online storage without decent AAA titles then that's a lie.

        • +1

          @neonlight:

If you tell me there's a high percentage of people paying for PSN+ for online storage without decent AAA titles then that's a lie.

I honestly don't care if Sony don't give any AAA titles and I want indie titles & 2d platformers even less. AAA games don't deserve that title anymore as 9 times out of 10 they are a broken release with the 50% content with the other 50% in paid DLC.

      • +1

It's not good value if you don't want any of them.

    • +6

What's the purpose of a game? Fun.

Is it only AAA titles that are usually incomplete nowadays upon release that are fun? No.

      Broaden your horizons.

      • +3

That's why I qualified my sentence by saying the games can still be entertaining. I have 300 hours into Don't Starve, an indie game yet I would rate it more fun than most other games I have played. But we're on Ozbargain so I'm talking value.

      • +3

It's becoming rarer than ever that even AAA games are fun. AAA seems to only be describing the graphics and marketing scheme these days.

    • +5

Yeap..PS+ has really gone downhill in the last year.. It wouldn't be so bad if there was like one AAA title per platform with an indie title.. but every month now it's an indie title.. coupled with the requirement for PS+ for multiplayer.. hahah yeah..

Edit: Look at what the x360 gets.. F1-2013 and Mafia II.. there's really no comparison..

      • +4

lol, mediocre 3 year old budget titles? I agree, no comparison. Try playing some of these games before you compare them.

      • I was actually more happy with this lineup than Microsoft's, since there's 4 vita games this month, and nothing good for the Xbox one.

Edit: I subscribe to PS plus for my Vita and games for gold for my Xbone.

      • +2

Really surprised to hear people say they're preferring the XBOX lineup.

In my opinion, Mafia II is probably the only thing to be excited about - and it was actually part of the PS+ Lineup in August last year.

CastleStorm is the only XBONE game, whereas PS+ has 5 PS4 titles. CastleStorm is fun, but really noting special - it's a pretty mediocre tower defence game. It didn't keep my attention for more than 30 mins.

Guacamelee is a fantastic game, which I've passed on PS3 and will definitely replay on PS4.
The Unfinished Swan is a quirky and pretty first person indie game which I've wanted to play for a long time and ave heard plenty of fantastic things about.

I can't vouch for the remaining PS+ games - but even without them, PS+ definitely seems the better offering for this month.

    • +4

You're right. I'm also not seeing any value in PS+ if it just means bargain basement indie games. Will probably not renew my subscription this year.

    • +1

Your statement makes no sense. You say each average around $10. 6 Games at $10 each is $60 and you pay around $70 for the whole year. If this was the same offering all year round that would make it $720 in value for $70. I would say that is great value. I guess it comes down to how you view the games on offer of course and the value of the games will be different each month. I'll give anything a try. I am only about 8 months into my membership so can't compare it to what it was previously but I am loving it.

  • +5

When's that ps+ edition of drive club coming? It's been almost a year and a half since the ps4 release.

It seems like they really dropped the quality of ps+ games after they made it mandatory for ps4 multiplayer.

    • Yeah, that is true. Driveclub has been one massive fail though the full game is pretty good now its been fixed at last.

    • Errr yeah I totally agree that was an embarrassing fiasco, but a year and a half? It came out October 2014. That's six months ago.

      • +2

Nah mate, that was the delayed date. It was originally meant to come out with the ps4 as a launch title. On mobile so can't be bothered finding a better source but here's one:

Server problems scuppered Sony's original plans to offer the PS Plus Edition alongside the game's full retail launch - which at one point was due to happen alongside the PS4 itself.

        Source: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-02-24-sony-commited-t…

        • Been so many total balls up AAA releases this generation. Drive club, Ass Creed Unity and Halo MC for instance.

        • Fair enough, I forgot about that part! Was just going off the "actual" release date. I've seen enough delays to "planned" release dates that I pretty much take the "Good luck, I'll believe it when I see it" approach these days :)

        • @SuperMatty: Yep, I can count on one finger the amount of devs I trust 100% to not rush a release and let me down.

  • +3

I sort of regret buying PS+… I still haven't activate it yet.

And I found no good free game that I wanted eveny month and I don't play much FPS multiplayer these day. The only multiplayer I play daily is FF14 online which requires no PS+…

  • +4

Guacamelee alone is worth it! If you like Symphony of the Night or Metroid games, you would like this.

  • +3

    What a crap!

  • +2

Nice selection for the Vita this month. Have wanted to try Unfinished Swan & Hohokum for a while.

    • +1

The Unfinished Swan is a great game. It starts off childish and innocent but becomes darker and darker almost to libmo-esque level

  • Race the sun :) Nice, been waiting for that one.

  • +2

A lot of games I'm intending to buy are becoming free with PS+. Lessens the sting of it being mandatory for PS4 multiplayer.

  • +1

That list of games saved me a PS+ subscription.

    • Cool

  • +2

    Hi all

New to the PS+ world, is there a place you would recommend on buying the yearly subscription for a discounted price rather than paying full retail price?

    Thanks in advance

  • +2

I can't wait for the deal that says multi player gaming isn't needed with ps+ for PS4.

Now that is a deal I'd like to see!!!

    • +1

Yeah, won't happen I'm afraid. I'm looking forward to free money myself.

    • That is how it should actually be … Charging for multiplayer is greedy and they just try to cover it with the instant game collection :(

      • +1

There are ongoing server costs but yes, I agree. Nintendo will be at it soon as well once they've figured the internet out.

        • The PS3 multiplayer was always free and it run smoothly most of the time… Not really justifiable to charge for server costs in my opinion …

        • @CrazyMexican: The PS3 needed a selling point over the 360 which had a year headstart on it and a big install base. That was Sony's first proper outing into its own proper gaming network and tbh I wouldn't have paid for that service at all in the early days as it was terrible.

  • +2

In my opinion, it is great that sony included the unfinished swan. I really enjoyed the game and even though it does not have that much replay value, it was a wonderful and unique gaming experience. It feels kind of similar to journey, but yet offers its own unique gaming experience. For those who like casual and relaxing indie games, try it out.

  • This lineup is great. Really excited about playing The Unfinished Swan - heard a lot of good things.

    • I got really bad motion sickness in the first or second level and stopped playing.

Hopefully you don't have the same experience.

      • +1

No I've been enjoying it quite thoroughly :)

        • Sweet. I'lL give it another shot sometime.
