14W Cool Daylight Compact Fluorescent Lamp/Globe/Bulbs (Bayonet Cap) - $4 for 2 at Woolworths

390

http://postimg.org/gallery/2vg36lqzc/e7e8dfc3/

I'm pretty sure these are nationwide until stocks run out as I heard about the deal from a mate who in VIC who heard about it from another in WA:
- The Olsent Compact Fluorescent Lamp 14W (60W equivalent) cool white bayonet cap one 2 pack for $4
- If you're after the edison screw type my local woolies also had a 11W (40W equivalent) both warm white and cool white/daylight available for the same price. Although I can't find this online.

My local Woolworths store (Metcentre Sydney) were selling all the above lamp/globes/bulbs on discount $4 for 2 (down from $10.49). If you can't be bothered to check your local store you can order these with Woolworths online with your next grocery also. Either way check in store next time you're getting your groceries and see what's available if you like. At $2 each it's a decent deal when your average lamp/bulbs are now $3.25-$3.70 when you buy in bulk at regular prices.

The metcentre Sydney should still have one 11W (eidson screw cool white) one left as I bought the other 3 on shelf.

See pics for more specs/info. Added bonus is that the Olsent range these come with a 12 month satisfaction guarantee (apparently if you're not satisfied within 12 months you can return it with proof of purchase for full refund)

Are these the ones with mercury in them?

    • they are fluorescent lamps, so yes

      duh

      • so yes

        Awesome… thanks…

Yeah, sorry for the dodgy pic. I think there's something wrong with my phone camera sensor but apparently there is less than 5mg of Mercury in it.

In the meantime here's some fun facts about mercury in light bulbs from national geographic. Apparently when you break it it releases less 0.8mg and such low levels it is well below any concerning thresholds:
      http://energyblog.nationalgeographic.com/2014/01/08/separati…

Alchemists also believed mercury was the most important of all substances because it encompassed solid and liquid, earth and heaven, and life and death. They also believed it offered the path by which base metals could become gold and represented the quintessential property of fluidity - what were these guys smoking back then?

LEDs might be a better alternative but whenever I've looked the cheapest I've seen them have been $7-$10 (rarely but that will change as LEDs become even more popular.

      • What is the size?

        eg. ø55mm x H110mm

      • Alchemists also believed mercury was the most important of all substances because it encompassed solid and liquid, earth and heaven, and life and death.

Thanks, that's why I asked. I'm going to start a Udemy Alchemist Course and want to get a hold of some mercury…

I think many concerns about mercury are overblown.

You know that thing that doctors used to have in their surgery, that looked like an oversize thermometer and measured your blood pressure? Well that had THOUSANDS of times more mercury in it, and the top end of the thermometer-looking bit was OPEN TO THE AIR.

I think doctors associations would have noticed if their members were being affected by mercury - after all, they should know the effects.

If you work with mercury on a regular basis, then you should probably take precautions. But the tiny amount in a light bulb, in my opinion, is insignificant, and unlikely to be released into the air anywhere near you - as long as you don't break it when you put it into the bin, or put other items on top of it in the bin.

Note also that some doctors STILL have mercury blood-pressure-measuring devices. Digital ones are substantially cheaper, but also less accurate.

Interesting thing about mercury is that elemental mercury is not too dangerous - it's not well absorbed through skin nor the gastrointestinal tract, and poisoning is usually via vapours and the respiratory system (and even then fairly rare).

Mercury compounds are far more readily absorbed, especially organic compounds like methylmercury (that's also the one that accumulates in fish), and dimethylmercury is just plain scary.

    • You love using bold don't you.

        I'd use italics but I'm not Italian…

    • I'd be more worried about the UV damage to belongings that are sensitive to that as CFLs leak more UV than the tubes.

14W for 60W equivalent is very poor.

Aldi have 9W for 60W eqv (or close) for a little more for 2.

    • +3

Those are more likely to be stretching the word "equivalent" than they are to be a world leader in their lumens per watt figures.

      • SamR do they still do Aldi still sell this "9W for 60W eqv for a little more than 2"

Was at the Aldi Broadway (NSW) yesterday and couldn't find a 9W for $2. Maybe it was a rare special/clearence you saw.

Especially not for a little bit more than $2. Closest was the 15W for 900lumen for a everyday price of $2.75 (closer to $3) per globe - very similar to what Ww is (was) clearing out without the warranty.

Took a photo of this at: http://postimg.org/image/xnmps3qyr/

    • I didn't know they stock bulbs as an everyday available item… that being said I don't do much shopping at Aldi normally as they tend to be in the burbs (I'm in the CBD) so I wouldn't know much about what they stock. Will have to look into it next time I'm at a store!

Another reason why I avoid aldi is the good bargains sell out faster than the things here on Ozbargain.

  • Consider the next level up. Masters has $5 10W/800LM LED bulbs: http://www.masters.com.au/product/101555873/orbit-10w-led-gl… . LED > Fluorescent.

    • This is true…I've moved on from these compact fluorescents now. As they blow in my house I'm replacing them with Philips LED Bayonet - cost $16 from Bunnings.

Yes they are more expensive, but I'm prepared to pay the premium for longer life, no warm up time and good CRI and lower wattage. ie 9w LED is equiavalent to 60w globe and is more than enough brightness.

The compact fluorescents in rooms used short periods - ie toilet, bathroom, I find never lasted long anyway (6 months). They don't like short burst use.

I did try this Olsent brand over the years and wasn't impressed. Philips CFLs were silent, however Mirabella, this Olsent brand, and a few others had an annoying hum that you could hear in a quiet room. Enough to annoy me.

    • At $5 each for everyday pricing that's not a bad idea. Might consider that next time given it might last twice as long as these $2 ones. Thanks

  • Do these go up in flames like the Philips ones?
