  • Just got off the phone with them, managed to activate my cards however there was no mention of the promotion on my account. The service rep who was quite helpful is going to check with their maintenance team during business hours and call me back. Couldn't link my QFF account either as their awards team only work business hours. Fingers crossed I'll be hearing good news on Monday.

Finally got approved for "MasterCard Platinum" while it was sitting in pending for like 2weeks.. 12K auto approved once pay slips emailed over.

Called them to move over the Qantas program and activate cards, noticed today i was charged $10.00 for the "QANTAS FF DIRECT FEE" and another charge for "ANNUAL FEE" -$249.

My cars registration is due next week will pay that with these cards then cancel it once i see the points hit.. happy with my westpac earth black cards. :D

reminder to self: need to cancel ANZ cards.

    Terms say on application page:

^ The annual fee will still be charged to your account but will be credited back to your account within 90 days. An additional annual $10 Qantas Frequent Flyer Direct opt-in fee also applies. After the first year, the then current standard annual fee applicable to your card type will apply. The additional annual $10 Qantas Frequent Flyer Direct opt-in fee will also continue to apply.

Been over 2 weeks since my application was 'approved'. Been asked to verify ID at the branch 3 times… and each time I've gone in they seem to have no idea what they're doing. Called up the call centre and each time they've insisted that they'll sort it out.

Not a great first experience with CBA customer service…

  • +3

Received first statement with $249 annual fee and $10 QFF fee. Have spent over the $500 so lets hope that all goes well and I get the bonus points and annual fee credited back.

  • Does the annual fee and $10 for Qantas FFP count as part of the $500 spend?

  • Two weeks after my first spend ($500+) and my Annual Fee has come through with my statement. I also received 414 FF points from shopping, so now I know the Cwealth Awards link works for when my 40k point come through.

I assume I pay the annual fee with my statement to avoid %%. But when they refund me, my CC will be at $0 and will go into credit..

I suppose you can't get that cash back? You just have to spend it? Sounds a little messy.

"You will be charged the full annual fee with the first statement and then refunded 100% of the fee as a statement credit within 90 days of activating your credit card"

    • +1

Yes, that's the catch i have noticed with the annual card fee, initially you will be charged $249 and they have stated within 90day's you will receive this credit back.. So to avoid any interest or what not you will need to pay this and once you are refunded back from CB you would be in credit.

You would need to budget around it and have about $249 owning on it around the 55 days interest free days.

  • So Ive paid my +$500 statement and my account's now at $0 and will remain that way until I am reimbursed with my +$249 annual fees.
At that stage I will pay a $300 bill, which would put my card into debt and I would go instore to pay my -$51 balance (the difference) and close the account.
But alas… if my 40k FF havent come in then I can't close the account because it would defeat the purpose and I will have to go through another statement period…
    Well played, Cwealth.

    • +1

But going through another statement period is free isn't it?

      • Yeh just pay your statement on time and it's fine and close the account before the next lot of annual fees are due, ill close mine as soon as i get my 40k FF points. Read the fees that come with your card to avoid nasty costs eg 'cash out' will sting.

    • So ideally I'd just like spend the required amount, pay one statement, get my points and leave.
The $249 refund means I might have to spend that $249 and go into debt again because Im not sure i can just withdraw that money. It's just more opportunities for people to slip up by defaulting in a statement, thats all.

  • Judging from the experiences shared here. This deal seems to be more trouble than it's worth.

    • It's worth hundreds of dollars of points…

    • +1

Good things come to those who wait.

Hopefully if all goes well then in 2 months from now the bonus points will arrive and fees credited.

      • Don't mind the wait but more the drama/inconvenience/confusion that people have experience along the way (esp when compared to other banks).

  • Wondering if others haven't been charged the $290 fee?

I've been charged the $10 QFF fee and spent over $500 on the card

I have my homeloan with Commbank and signed up with the wealth package which has given friends the platinum card for free, wonder if that's applying as well?

    • +1

I just got charged the ~$59 fee (Awards, not Platinum). The signup page said it'll be charged but rebated within 90 days.

If it's not, I'll obviously be complaining (also likely about the lack of points granted for signing up via the promo + requesting a refund on the FF fee if so).

I'll let you know in 90 days..

    • I have wealth package with cba as well, already have a diamond card and not paying annual fees, enrolled to CBA points. anyone in this situation and applied for this plat card? will i be only charged with $10 qantas opt-in and not the annual fee, and still get the 40k points? can i have 2 credit cards with 1 enrolled in CBA points and 1 enrolled in qantas points?

      • A friend of mine has the diamond card and applied for platinum, all approved and was assured that you could have both cards and still get the points.

Both of us have the wealth package and yet to see the $290 fee, charged the $10. So hopefully we get the points and be fee free!

        • Actually literally today I have a line item on my netbank that says "Annual fee waived"

        • thanks for the reply, was your friend enrolled in Qantas points already for the diamond card? Would it work if I had two cards and each card enrolled to a different program (i.e. one to CBA awards and one to Qantas points?)

  • Don't forget to add the $20 cashback

  • Any1 know why they say I only have 30 days to spend $500?

    • In the first sentence

apply online via this webpage for a new CommBank Platinum Awards credit card by 3 July 2015 and spend at least $500 on eligible purchases1 using your new card by 31 August 2015.

Who says you only have 30 days?

      • +1

I rang cba up to complain since they gave me gold rather than platinum. The guy say I still get the same offer/points but I have to spend $500 within 30 days….

        • It`s even better, you pay way less annual fee. Would have preferred that if I knew…

        • @noskich: not sure if the dude knows what he's talking about with the 30 days thing. However, first year's waived anyway

        • It is waived, but still, 250 bucks is locked for three months and then you get it credited and need to spend it as they charge cashback transfers. So would have been better to pay just 89 for annual fee instead with getting the same points. Nevermind, just checked again and this Comm card agony should end sometime second week of August for me. Hopefully no hick ups with fee refund and points or I`ll get feisty.

  • +2

honesty, if anyone is so fuss about having the 300ish dollars locked for 3 months, then have difficulty spend $800 on the card, then this platinum card is not really for you.

    • I prefer my money invested than lying around or spent. Every cent counts as they say…

      • +3

what do u invest in? Also this could be considered an investment. $300 term deposit for 3 months earning 40,000 points for the life of the deposit. :)

        • It is, but would have been even better if you needed less collateral to put on it. ;)

Different things, managed funds, deposits, precious metals, overseas land and real estate.

        • +1

@noskich: haha risk and reward right? at least this is nice and safe :) and a guaranteed outcome. Good stuff, nice and diversified. Trying to get started out investing myself, hard to know where to start!

        • +1

          @poop:

Never went through any worse hassle to get the points than this. The NAB`s 40K points a couple of months ago were the sweetest. I opened the account, spent 1 dollar and got the points within one month. Closed the card straight away. This one is torture compared to that.

        • @noskich:

You're acting entitled, they're doing us a favour, not the other way around.

Even if it's a few hours mucking around you're making $100+/ hour. Are your other investments making you $100/ hour? :)

        • +1

          @xDEFiNE:

I`ll feel grateful once I get the points. Until then, I can whinge ;)
          )

        • @noskich:

          Haha, indeed you can.

          Still entitled though :)

        • @xDEFiNE:

You bet. Banks charge 20% on credit cards when the cash rate is 2%. They are raking in billions. Should give back much much more!

        • +1

          @noskich:

Haha, i see. Let me help you point out your flawed logic.

The banks don't owe you a single cent. We're the ones that choose to use them, many for free, you don't have to pay fees as such, just choose a different account. No one owes you anything.

The only reason they're making 20% is because people can't control the amount they spend. It's not the banks fault, they're just enabling the consumers. They know that a good majority of people will spend too much on there credit cards not thinking too much about the future and repayments, in essence using it like it's an atm with no thought for future. They may be taking advantage of this, but it's the law of nature. You take what you can get.

You go give a 14 year old $2000 in cash, what do you think he's going to do with it? Good chance he'll just go blow it not thinking about the consequences. This is the mentality a large number of people hold with CC's and the banks know it. You can't blame the banks, that's just you trying to shift blame. No one wants full responsibilities in this day and age.

You may as well blame alcohol for all the alcoholics, heroin for all the junkies. If not a CC, people will find something else to enable there behaviour. In fact, I think the 20% repayment rate is a good thing. It might actually teach people a lesson, give them something they can't ignore. A big (profanity) debt, like a sign being held up in front of there face. Hey, you.You spent all this money, remember. Did you really think you wouldn't have to pay this off? This is what happens when you can't control your spending

Some people shouldn't own credit cards, and they know it. It's because they can't control themselves.

        • +1

@xDEFiNE: although i do agree with you, i think some of the criteria the banks use to determine who is eligible is highly flawed.
When I was an undergrad, i applied for a gold cc with CBA, they gave me a 10k limit even though I barely had any income.
I use my cc's like cash. If I have the money I buy on my cc and pay it off almost immediately, so it was no issue for me. But for a lot of people that could have crippled them financially for a long time.
Is that the banks fault? Almost entirely not, but should they be giving out 10k cc's to broke uni students?…i think not. That's irresponsible lending and they should be much tighter on this.

        • +1

          @poop:

i think some of the criteria the banks use to determine who is eligible is highly flawed.

It definitely is flawed, the entire system is flawed. We're all flawed.

Is that the banks fault? Almost entirely not, but should they be giving out 10k cc's to broke uni students?…i think not. That's irresponsible lending and they should be much tighter on this.

Probably not, but we're the ones who are choosing whether to use that limit, or not. I hold a similar mentality to you, just treat it like cash. It's not like they're handing us 10grand in cash to spend, in essence it'll always end up being our money we're spending.

Life may teach harsh lessons, but in the end it's still your fault if you're stupid enough to utilise that 10k limit knowing you can't pay it back.

Self control is a harsh lesson, but one best taught early, if need be.

        • @xDEFiNE:

Have you heard about fractional reserve banking? The money that bank lands out is made out of thin air. It is not deposited money or investor money.

        • @noskich:

Sort of similar to the wall street bank. Those guys give loans out, billions of dollars out of thin air to other countries.

Doesn't affect me however so i'm not too concerned about it. They may be evil corporations trying to run the world, but still don't owe us shit regardless.

  • I have a wealth package with CommBank and initially went to the offer page of 40K points. I clicked on the fact that I am an existing NetBank Customer and was taken to another screen where the offer is $50 cash back and no annual fee for life on a Platinum Card. I called up CommBank to see if I would receive both the 40K points and the $50 cash back but the consultant did not know. Do you think I would or best just to apply as a Non Net Bank Customer perhaps to be sure.

    • I'm also a CBA customer with wealth package and diamond card, i applied for this with no problem. applied last week and got my plat cards this week, linked to QFF via phone call to awards team. now have to spend $500 and wait for points! (note, wealth package customers won't get charged annual fee, only charged $10 QFF fee).

  • I haven't used QFF before.
Can I use the points instead to buy giftcards?
For example I found the $250 Woolworths WISH Gift Card for 37,500 points.

    • You can only use it on handbags (or anything else they happen to have on the QFF store). seriously you can use it on anything and a lot of people will be just using it for supermarket gift cards.

      • Awesome thanks. Then it seems this is the card to apply from CBA compared to the $100 cash back on their low rate card.

        • +1

I always use it on a Wish card because it gives you the best range of stores to spend it in (Woolies, Dan Murphy, Big W, Masters…). But in the end I spend it all in Woolies for groceries and Opal anyway.

There has been a lively debate on what is the best value for using points. While it is true that in dollar terms the highest value you get from upgrading flights to business, I could not care less about the flight class, rather prefer to fly AirAsia and cover my groceries and Opal which I would pay for anyways (admittedly less in Aldi, but hey, it`s free after all…).

  • Has anybody been charged the yearly fee AND been refunded the fee in their next statement? I was charged the fee but given no refund yet and also cannot find some written proof to show to CommBank that I signed up to this offer.

None of the mails, emails or paperwork I received from them stated that the fees will be waived and 40.000 FF points issued.

Just stating that if there is a dispute I actually have no proof what I signed up for exactly. Anybody else have some 'proof' that I may have missed ?

    • As per description: "First year annual fee will be credited after 90 days, but $10 Qantas FF program charge will apply."

As for the proof, can anyone upload a screenshot of the deal and post a link? Thanks.

I doubt Comm Bank would trick, but just in case.

      • Received the refund yesterday, so all good.

  • I signed up for the platinum card and they decided to send me the gold card, I rang to confirm if I was still eligible and they said no. Not happy put in a complaint.

    • I rang up again and the second consultant advised that I would be eligible for the offer because I did apply for the platinum in the first place under the offer and they rejected it due to my spending history

  • +1

Ummm quick question. I got charged the $10 qantas fee but not the annual fee, but have now just got an annual fee refund. So they have basically just given me $249. When has everyone elses annual fee been charged? Maybe they've got mine back to front. Or maybe they just gave me $249 and won't ever charge the annual fee? Will have to wait and see i suppose, but has this happened to anyone else?

    • +4

You've just passed Go and collected rent from your undeveloped Mayfair property. Hats off to you meowmeowmeow!

    • i got my refund today…had to pay for it first though..looks like they processed a whole bunch…took a while after i applied for the fee to come through so hopefully they don't charge you!

      • I got the refund as well.

    • +1

i got charged $10 QFF fee and $249 was refunded to me but i was never charged this amount.. however i am on wealth package so technically the annual fee is waived. wonder if it will just be a free $249…

      • Yes it's interesting. I don't have any other accounts with CBA so there's no reason why i wouldn't be charged the annual fee, unless they made a mistake. I won't be surprised if the fee comes through later, but i also wouldnt be surprised if i never get charged. I'll report back if anything comes through.

      • update: i have been charged the $249 .. bye bye free money.. :(

        • ;-)
          Have u got points?

Still no refund n points :-(

        • @huhuu77: no points

    • I was charged $249 one day before my first statement was issued.
I received the refund one day after my second statement was issued.. Am now 50$ in credit :)

Lets see if the bonus points will come next month.

      • Even better for me:

I got this cards 3 weeks ago.
After getting them to manually opt me in to their QFF program they charged the $10 opt-in fee.
A few days ago I finished spending $500 with this card and now they "refunded" me $249 annual fee, although they haven't even charged me the fee yet…

        That's very generous.
Maybe I should cancel the card quickly now, before they actually charge me the fee? :D

    • Ok so i got charged the annual fee two weeks after receiving the refund, so i didn't get $250 for free. Looks like they are both in the same statement period though, so that's a bit less hassle than some of the other people here :)

      • +1

Bugger, you got assessed for street repairs on your 3 houses and 1 hotel.

  • Mmm so now I have been credited the annual fee. Looks like I will have to use this card again as my account is now in credit. Might see if they can transfer the money out to my bank account.

    • you can, it'll just charge you a 2.50 cash advance fee.

      • Incorrect. I recently closed my account and when closing it I was easily able to transfer the money from the card to my bank account with no fee for doing this.

        • Well yeah sure if you want to close the account. I'm keeping it for the free travel insurance for the year.

  • hmm, seems that their refund process works backwards by date? I got my card in early May, however no refund yet.

  • The annual fee and refund happened on pretty much the same date for me

  • remember to call them and register your frequent flyer number. I need forgot about it and application didnt let you put it in advance

  • Bit of a gotcha that you needed to call them. I thought I put the QFF number in with the application. Just rang them now and got it linked. Bit of a pain but hopefully will get the 40,000 points in the end….

  • I already got the second statement. Spent more than 1K, but still no refund & points.

    • You are not alone

      • Has anyone got the points yet? And when are we supposed to get the points anyway? After 3 months from the first transaction or from spending $500? Thanks.

    • same here, I actually spent well over 3K already, and nothing.

      • its usually 3 months from spend date. So probably be a while yet.

        • +1

I thought it was 3 months from the activation of card, of course under the condition that spend minimum has been met.

        • @noskich:

To answer my own question: I called them and they said it is 3 months from the date you spent $500. Thus even more waiting ahead. :(

        • @noskich: LOL, end of Aug for me then…

  • +3

I got my $249 back. no points yet.

  • I have received 20,000 points only, anyone else?

    • OMG! Please take them to task on our behalf. I am sweating off on receiving mine for a planned trip.

    • i still got nada…will have to wait and see! any word from CBA?

    • What credit card did you have? Is it the platinum as per this deal ?

      • It is platinum. I checked my statement (third one) and it says bonus point earned 40,000 and points redeemed 40,000 but I have only received 20,000. I will wait for a few more days before calling them, it could be that they transfer the points in two lots?

        • I only got 20,000 points too on 29/7 :/

        • I think it's referring to 40k CBA points which translates to 20K QFF points.

        • Anyone with a screenshot of the original offer? What was stated on the commonwealth bank homepage? We need a screenshot if we are going to dispute that in branch.

        • +1

          @twodollah:

You will get another 40K CBA points next Tuesday.

    • nothing yet

  • Had 20,000 points deposited on 29/7 - where's the other 20K!?

  • +3

Got confirmation from CBA that we will get another 40,000 Commbank awards points which is 20,000 QFF points next Tuesday. They transfer then in two batches and the second batch will come through next week.
