much better than has to spend 3k

    • But no balance transfer offer :(

      • +2

Hard to spend money when on BT, as they'll charge you full interest on the purchases.

    • +1

Even if it was for 3k spend, just buy a fully refundable airfare. Pretty sure refunding a purchase does not your ability to obtain the bonus points.

      • I don't know about that, because I have a Citibank Signature, and every time I've gotten a refund, the points have come out accordingly…

However since we're talking about bonus points here it could work

        • +3

Yes exactly. For regular points that you get from spend it will get deducted, but for bonus points it should definitely work.

I actually asked the question last time ANZ had this promo. I asked if refunding a purchase would still contribute to the required minimum spend threshold, and I was told it would, because the keyword is "purchase". It makes no reference to what you do afterwards (including refund).

          @illumination:

          Oh good stuff!

In that case, business class flights here we come! ;)

        • +2

@montorola: Just don't forget to refund it!!

        • -3

Buy a refundable airfare, and then have it refunded into airline voucher credit for use at a later date, rather than on to the credit card…

        • +4

          @ajdlinux:

for offers like this, i usually buy via that credit card and then ask them to refund it on another credit card.

or i ask for a cheque and tell them the CC as been cancelled

        • @easternculture: Ooh, that's another good option too…

        • +1

@easternculture: I'm using this method to collect my Westpac Altitude Black Qantas lounge passes. Fully refundable business fare next year, passes should come in a month or so, then full refund, in no way mentioned in the conditions.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

i might do that too . Still have to order the lounge passes for my ANZ, Citibank and this Westpac one.

apparently people sell them for $50 a pop

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: what's in the lounge btw? never tempted to use it.

        • @brongz:

Showers, recliners, table service food (at least in the Singapore and HK combined lounges), and free booze.

        • @ajdlinux:

Buy a refundable airfare, and then have it refunded into airline voucher credit for use at a later date, rather than on to the credit card…

Hang on why would you want to do that? Isn't it better to get the refund onto the original credit card?

        • @illumination: to avoid missing out on points because the amount purchased was refunded. Even if the bonus points aren't cancelled by a refund, you'd lose regular points. Though as easternculture said you could possibly get them to refund it on to a different credit card.

        • @ajdlinux: Won't the refunded amounts be treated as a deduction in points on the card that you ultimately get it refunded to though?

        • @illumination: refund it to one of your non-points-earning cards :P

        • @ajdlinux: Ah. I like that. 28 Degrees is more than just a travel card!!!

        • @easternculture: can you explain this more to me?
So I spend the $500 in this case (or $3k in some other cases) and nothing more on the card.
Say I have another card from say ANZ, equal or higher credit limit, currently nothing spent on it (i.e. sitting at balance of the credit limit).

If I get it refunded to the ANZ card, it would put the balance into "credit" (for want of a better word) right? I.e. it would be credit limit+refunded fare value? Almost like one of those "pre paid" travel cards for example.

So I'll still get a bill for the cost of the $500 fare on the CBA card. Normally paying a credit card bill with another CC is counted as a cash advance right? But what if my account is in credit as described above? Is this a cash advance or not?

And the more important corollary is: what's to stop me doing this constantly between a few cards?
I.e. spend with card A, refund to card B so card A still gets the points, pay off card A with card B, wash rinse repeat?

        • @easternculture: You have an airline that won't charge a fee when you refund a ticket? I checked jetstar and they charge a fee for refund even on the full refund ticket/max bundle

  • +2

Commonwealth is the last one in the big four banks to "give away" QFF points. Not as good as ANZ, NAB and Westpac, but $10 for 40,000 points is a great bargain! Thanks OP.

    • +6

Importantly, It ends in two months' time, which should give some of us time for credit score recovery to avail of it.

The past 18 months has had:

      • Macquarie 40,000 QFF for $99 (offset by Qantas lounge passes)
      • ANZ 50,000 QFF for $0
      • NAB 40,000 QFF for $0
      • Westpac 60,000 QFF for $0
      • CBA 40,000 for $10

I was getting excited when the Macquarie deal brought me over 100k QFF balance. Now looking to nudge 400k by year's end.

      'ken boo-yeh.

      • And then you realise that you still have to pay 700-900 in taxes if you want to use qff to fly to the USA. Velocity ftw. Good for gift cards i guess

        • +2

Which is why you avoid using QFF points for most economy classic reward seats - you get better value by spending either on upgrades/premium cabin rewards, or on a RTW fare. Gift cards are about the least efficient way to use them.

        • @ajdlinux:
Alternatively you just go for velocity points where they dont screw you on taxes

        • @brentman1: Correct, except that you'll never collect Velocity points in the same way as you can collect Qantas points. You get a lot of 10k or 20k bonus points issues, every so often a 40k. Qantas 40k offers are crazily common at the moment.

Then, once it dies down, go back to earning Velocity.

        • @brentman1: Depends. I earn a lot of my points through actually being a frequent flyer - and most of that flying is short-haul domestic in areas where Virgin has noticeably inferior service (PQQ-SYD, QF operates 4 flights per day, VA operates 2, CBR-SYD, QF operates B717s, VA operates ATR 72s). For me it's worth sticking with the one program.

      • That still means you somehow managed to get 100k QFF points from somewhere else.. that's gotta be some insane spending.

        • I also snuck in 20,000 QFF from HSBC (I switched from the fee free + $150 gift cards and Bal Transfer platinum), not to mention a HECS payment, and will be laying on some friends' uni fees.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Holy crap friend's uni fees… that's so good lol

        • @illumination: Make friends with some international students, allow them to pay you up to a month later, and make sure you have a 1:1 Visa/MC (like HSBC Platinum).

        • I've managed to build my balance up to over 90k - a big chunk of that came from actually flying QF and Oneworld, but NAB CC + Aquire + eBay make up for about half of that. Unfortunately I won't be in a position to churn credit cards for a few months (currently between employers), but by the end of the year I'm expecting to get to at least 200k as well as requalifying for QFF Silver.

  • +2

where do you enter your QFF number

There is no place to enter it

    • maybe when we activate the card they will ask our qff#

    • That's generally done when you activate the account after the card has been approved. (At least that's the case with NAB)

      • no probs. Ive been conditionally approved pending my pay slips which i just uploaded. Then i just have to prepay in advance my next electricity and gas bill via Bpay and hopefully the points will show up soon.

  • +2

I have had three of those that the OP has listed in the past 18 months. My credit card rating is (incredibly) still good but don't want to push my luck on this one right now either. I think to be safe I better wait for another 5 months so I might just have to skip this deal. Thanks OP.

  • -8

have been thinking of getting a CBA CC so seems like a good deal.

    • Don't spread it here. Inhale and enjoy it yourself, duh!

      • but annual fee of $249 still bit too high.
WOuld probably cancel before then i guess.

    • +2

then you fart?!! (just reminding your original comment);)

      • i thought it was too smelly to leave behind.

  • Good deal and considering taking this one up, however the earn rate on the Amex is 1.25 points per dollar up to 60,000 points in the year. Wonder if the bonus 40,000 is included in this amount? After that the Amex only earns 0.5 point per dollar spend. Plus you can only earn a max 100,000 points in the year.

    0 – 60,000
    points

    AMEX
    1.25 Qantas Points
    per $1 of eligible spend**

    MASTERCARD
    0.5 Qantas Points
    per $1 of eligible spend**

    60,001 –
    100,000 Points

    AMEX & MASTERCARD
    0.5 Qantas Points
    per $1 of eligible spend**

The card is definitely a dud - the offer is still gold.

      • at least the bard is not mud and the cougher is not old

  • Oh man,

I just got mine 2 weeks ago, signup with no bonus and promotion

Any chance I can ask them for these extras?

    • Just call up and try? No harm, surely.

      • +3

Rang them, they said they cant do it :(

If everything is in order, your credit contract and new credit card will be posted to you soon.

Sigh. As a student on centrelink I don't have much luck with these.
Fingers crossed though, a small scholarship that I get seems to help, the ANZ 50k one last year was rejected then randomly they called me 2 months later and offered the card with a low credit limit.

Points are good value for flights on Jetstar to HNL, assuming you aren't able to pick up one of their superb sale fares. About 56k points return and a few hundred in fees isn't too bad.

    • +1

I understand the Centrelink frustration. I did manage to get a $500 NAB Qantas card last year when I was employed part-time on top of study though, so if you have a reasonable side income it's not impossible even if you are mostly living off Youth Allowance.

It's particularly annoying for me given that I pay my credit card off in full every month and I maintain it purely for the frequent flyer points…

  • What's the minimum income requirement?

    • +1

      three fiddy

      • +5

        goddamn loch ness monster

      • Thanks for your valuable input.

  • +3

Hmm looks like my credit score has improved despite all the offers I've signed up to: https://www.getcreditscore.com.au/

    • +1

its goes up before it falls.

      • this is based on your assumption or fact?

    • wow..didn't know got such website…apparently I'm on very good too..

had at least 6 balance transfers card in the last 5 years…holding 3 now lol

    • Does getting your recent credit score from https://www.getscreditscore.com.au hit your credit score like applying for another credit card?

      • -1

        positive hit.
        it shows that you care.

      • +1

No it doesn't make any impact like applying for a credit card would.

  • +4

Can we take a moment to address the elephant in the room?

    John Howards Eyebrows

  • How much do you usually have to pay in taxes for flights? I used the calculator and it estimated 130k points for:
    Sydney > Vancouver > Tokyo > Sydney

Thinking the ultimate ski trip using points from recent credit card deals, however for memory the flight tax you have to pay may not be worth it.

    • Just went through the process, it's quite hard to find those flights as they use partner airlines and so aren't that easily available.

Did manage to find flights though, total points 134,000 and taxes $1005
Not sure if that's cheap or not…

      • I use American airways and find Qantas will let me use points to book economy flights out of some airports and then only only first out of others

I can fly Pensacola to lax for 18000 points via Dallas but
I can only fly first out of Atlanta to lax for 54000 points

        I don't get this,

        • Award seat availability on partner airlines is limited to whatever that partner airline decides to release to Qantas, so it's generally lower than when booking on QF itself - but it does seem a bit suspicious that you can't do ATL-LAX in economy given the size of both airports. May need to call Qantas and ask.

        • @ajdlinux:

rang them up got told was an availability thing, oh well for the sake of saving the points, i go to Birmingham airport 2 hours down the road (i start in the middle at talledega), and take 2 flights. extra meal too.

    • +1

Long haul flights are killed more by the fuel surcharges than the taxes. Nonetheless, the points are most definitely worth it, as the charges don't change much for business or first. So while 140k odd will get you RTW economy for maybe $800 taxes, 280k will get you RTW business, for a similar amount of taxes. 420k will get you RTW first. That's a $20,000 fare for less than a grand!

      • +10

Man I don't think I could bring myself to blow it all on first or even business. I'd be sitting there the whole time just wanting to get value for my points and end up sleep deprived and mildly insane. Give me a bag full of supermarket food and a good book and I'm happy back in economy.

        • +5

          YOLO

        • +5

          ^ exactly.

This is the only way we will experience first class air travel. Do it! Think of the stories you'll be telling your chums in economy on your subsequent flights (while hiding your tears).

        • +1

I'm not sure how long I could cope on a RTW trip in economy…

      • +1

My balance is currently at ~90k, am saving up for a 280K RTW in a couple of years time!

  • Be warned that they will charge you annual fee once the card is activated even though the offer is saying not until next year. Experience this with previous offer and they gave excuse the offer is already expired before the application is approved n card activated. Or they are not honouring the offer, have to take lengthy process to get it refunded.

    • +4

It says explicitly that they will charge you the annual fee on first use, then refund it (less the $10 QFF program fee) after 90 days, i.e. when you expect the points to be credited.

I don't mind lending them $300 for a few months in exchange for 40,000 points.

  • dam..wonder how's my credit rating biw ..had so many credit cards applied and cancelled over the years for 0% balance transfer + free points LOL

What scenario will affect your credit rating adversely by the way?

    • +1

The exact scenario you described will hit your rating pretty hard.

      • but then again, I already had 2 mortgages, and 1 business loan in the last 5 years….never once got rejected too…

Just tempted me to become greedier lol..

        • +1

cancelled my citi platinum, nab amex/visa platinum, anz classic since about a year ago. still hold amex issued gold, a platinum and a black, applied for this offer got approved. Checked my credit score, sitting comfortably in very good range.

  • Out of curiosity I got the nab card 2 months back, and have not got the 400000 points yet.

I just applied for this, 18000 pts to fly Pensacola to lax saves me 200 bucks a pop…

Do people have other tips to accrue points. I want to be the next pudding man

  • Why does getting a credit card and then cancelling it with you paying out the balance give you a bad credit rating?

  • Congratulations. Your credit card application has been conditionally approved.

Thanks OP, time to push my QFF balance over 100K again. Already got 90K from St Georges and Anz last year, used them upgrading my flights.

  • What's the minimum credit limit on this and income required?

    • +1

      $6,000 minimum credit limit.

CBA don't seem to specify a minimum income - presumably they'll vary it depending on other circumstances. Probably $60k, but maybe as low as $40k if your asset situation is good.

  • Interested to know if the refundable annual fee is counted in the minimum $500 spend. Technically its a spend, right guys ?

    • No, it never is counted. The 1.25 points is still OK - it's only 125 points lost had you spent it on your Westpac Altitude Black, in exchange for 40,000 points.

    • +2

damn… you truly are a tight ass if you can get by in 3 months without spending $500.

  • So if I cancel this card after I get my points that's ok?

I'm waiting for a decision because I recently moved :(

    • +9

The Ozbargain community would be disappointed in you if you didn't do that.

      • Hehe! Nice one Johnny. And no wonder the CBA share price got smashed. - The Ozbargain effect?

  • +1

So we currently have this card. Any chance of cancelling it and reapplying for the bonus?

    • +1

Nothing in the t's and c's mentions current holders excluded. I'd still call them to confirm though.
