I have the Altitude Black and am very happy with it. Get 3 points for using Amex & 1.25 points for MasterCard (you get both cards). $100 gift cards (eg Myer/DJs/Bunnings) cost 18,200 points. So with 60,000 bonus points you $300 in gift cards and have 5,400 points left. When using your Amex it equates to spending $6,067 to get a $100 gift card or a 1.65% return.

    • +2

So it would still be better to use ING Orange Everyday for purchases under $100 for 2% cashback.

      • The interest free period is an extra ~.33% from the money staying in your savings account.

        • +4

.33% is about 4% pa. If your money is in your offset account for the month and you're loan is 4.8%, it saves you another 0.4%. Also, some places give you bonus points, like Caltex an extra 1 reward point so it works out better. ING only works with paywave. Can use your Westpac card to buy Wish gift cards for 5% off online (various companies sell them for 5% off). Then you effectively get 7% = 5% + 1.65% + 0.4%

        • +2

@syba: Good points. Not so sure about the math.

By keeping your money in a 4% p.a. savings account for a 55 day interest free period = 0.61% interest earned at the very most. Assuming the maximum 1.65% return after spending >$6k on the AMEX it is a 2.26% return if you spent the money at the beginning of each billing period. For the Mastercard it would be a 1.29% return after spending $14,560.

Only the 5% off for wish cards will change the equation.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for getting these cards with no fee and bonus points.

I am just saying that for sub $100 paywave transactions keep using the ING 2% cashback.

        • Shame that Altitude recebtly clamped down on using an Amex to buy the Wish cards

        • @plowry1977:
Not familiar with the Westpac cards. Can you elaborate on the restriction? & if it only affects the earning of Altitude points or both Altitude & QFF points?

    • I don't think you earn points for bpay transactions (cba as well)… For me I use coles mc to bpay almost every bill. Just need to check the biller code that they accept credit cards (otherwise paying by bpay via cc would be treated as a cash advance).

    Altitude Black card is sexy

  • where does it say "First Year Annual Fee Waived"??

    • +1

Since it is in branch promotion, probably why it's not on website.

    • +1

It won't on website. It's an internal offer only.
All branch staff will know of this offer.

      • +1

South Perth branch staff did not. St George's Tce (Perth) branch staff did not.

Is there some internal memo we should be referring them to?

        • South Perth staff confirm they are now aware of the promotion

      • Definitely going to run until Apr 17?

  • What are people's success rates at getting a second Westpac card when you already have a Westpac Card? Never tried it before..

    • +1

High. Well I had a Westpac low rate card, then got their 55 day card, no problems. But I have other investments with them.

      • +1

So it's high, based on your one experience?

        • +13

yep, Sample size of 1, thus 100% success rate. lawl

        • @Turd:

Hold on…aren't you the guy with 13 credit cards? LAWLLL

        • +1

@montorola: lawl Ive got like 8 now, consolidated a few.

    • Should be no problem if you can service a new card. You can even have 2 black cards.

      • What's the benefit? Might as well just combine to have one big limit?

My limit on my black is 45k.

        • +2

The benefit would be getting 2 x 60k points bonus instead of 1.

      • what do you mean by service? As in meet the minimum income requirements added together for both cards you're applying for?

        • +1

means able to repay your credit card debt..

  • +2

Where does it say that the annual fee is waived for the first year?

    • In the post title and also at the start of the first sentence in the description.

If you are wondering why it is not written on Westpac's website then I suggest you finish reading the first sentence.

      • +9

Mate, everyone of us have read the line "Westpac just waived annual fees for the first year on all their credit cards. - for in branch applications only", the question is - where does WESTPAC say about in-branch applications get fee waiver ?

we don't normally walk into a branch and tell them "we've heard ozbargain people mentioned about …."

        • Agree with the above, but I actually just did that during lunch.
Banker confirmed that there is a Annual Fee Waiver - you have to sit with the banker and answer a couple of questions to determine which CC you are after.

If you are not a Westpac Customer, you need to provide 100 points of ID (Driver's Licence, Medicare Card will suffice as an example)

And once the card is approved, you may have to provide extra information like pay slips / etc

NOTE: I did NOT confirm whether or not you're still entitled to the bonus points if the annual fee is waived. I only saw that when I got back from lunch.
My appointment is tomorrow as she was busy today with another customer and I couldn't wait.

        • @redwiggle: Thanks, that's helpful

  • Altitude Classic
    $100
    $0 first year
·0% interest pa on purchases for 6 months
    ·10,000 Bonus Points
    Limit $1000

Limit $1000??? That's not very much

    • +4

Read through the details. MINIMUM $1000

  • does that mean you can earn 60k qantas point if you sign for black? do they check your salary? like give a company a call or paper work some sort?

    • Yes, they will check your salary through payslips, tax statements or a call to finance.

    • +1

From memory, Black requires salary range of 75k/year +. Or if you know someone who works there. ;)

    • 60,000 Altitude points converts to 30,000 Qantas points.

      • 60,000 Altitude or Qantas bonus Points

        • Right, didn't see that. I'd definitely be taking the Qantas points.

  • +1

Wonder why its for in branch applications only, what a pain.

Though probably worth the time for 60,000 free points.

Been a good year so far 40,000 from NAB, 20,000 from coles mastercard and its only March :)

    • I've been putting weeks and weeks worth of groceries onto my rewards from the ANZ 50k points offer. Feels so good to have them pay for my food.

  • I think i will have to lay off the Credit Card apps for a little bit, my laziness is helping me resist this one.

    • +2

It equates to about $350 for one hours work. Thats all the motivation i need.

      • Fair call, will watch this space, just wondering whether i would be approved after applying for 2 cards (approved for both) and being rejected for another (Coles Mastercard =/) recently. Also it seems i am just under the required Income Level

        • I would say your credit history has taken a beating, so lay low for at least 3 months to recover :)

Too many (and frequent) credit applications bring down the credit score significantly. Probably why your Coles one got rejected. Your chances are slim for this one.

        • @bobz79:
Apparently the reason for rejection was because some of the details i provided (identifying details such as address etc) did not match up with Vedo's details. I found that very weird and didn't bother checking for further info, but i did plan to lay low for a while, hopefully another Westpac card comes along soon

  • +4

OP, do you know when this offer expires ?

Have another CC application pending and would rather wait a few weeks at least before applying for another card

  • Can anyone else verify this offer?

  • "2:Qantas Club Lounge Invitations To be eligible for the two complimentary Qantas Club Lounge Invitations, you must first register at earthblack.com.au and then use your Earth Black card in Australia to purchase selected Qantas products and services.Selected Qantas products and services are the following items purchased directly from Qantas: Qantas passenger flights (with a QF flight number), Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees. Excludes Jetstar, Qantas Holidays, Qantas branded non-airfare products and any Qantas products and services not purchased directly from Qantas. Each year, you will receive two complimentary lounge invitations once you have made the required spend on selected Qantas products and services."

    • This is confusing, so you now have to have 4 sets of credit cards? 2 altitude black (AMX) and 2 Earth Black (AMEX)?

    • What about Qantas gift vouchers?

    • Anybody reckon there'd be consequences if you booked a fully flexible fare, then cancelled after you receive the passes?

  • Anyone know what the conversion rate is from Altitude to Velocity?

  • +1

The site says "60,000 bonus Altitude Points or Qantas Points after your first eligible purchase made by 31 May 201515."

I think 60,000 QFF points turn out to be better value?

    • Out of interest, where did you see it mention 31 May 2015?
      All I can see is:
" 60,000 Altitude or Qantas bonus Points with a new Altitude Black card after you make your first purchase by 30 April 2015. Offer ends 19 April 2015."

      • Might not be the same promo, because the link I have provided is for online app.

However, I think first purchase by 31 May 2015 makes more sense, because if someone applies and gets an approval by 19/04/2015, it will take another week (at least) for the cards to be sent. Very thin in terms of time. Just a thought.

    • after your first eligible purchase made by 31 May 201515.

Jeez, that's quite a long while away…..not in my lifetime!! :P

Any internal communication about this "fee-waiver" campaign ? What can we refer to, if we walk in a Westpac branch and trying to get the fee-waiver ?

  • +1

I just signed up via phone and got conditionally approved :)

    • With a waved fee?

    • how many minutes you were on the phone and how many questions?

      • +1

operator was awesome, i asked to make sure it was the right promo and whether i can apply online, she was more than happy to help.
took all of about 6mins…non including the records terms and cond. you have to listen to.
standard questions, background details, income, expenses etc.
minimum income i think is 75k to be eligible

        • +1

how about "any other credit cards and their balance/limit" questions?

    • +1

Do you get both the fee waiver and bonus point? If so, signing up over the phone might be more convenient than going into a branch.

      • +1

Yes. Just signed up by phone and got QFF pts and first yr fee free. Took about 25 min.

  • How does this card compare to ANZ Black?

    • +1

Very similar. Same points for AMEX (on Qantas points anyway). Companion card is Mastercard instead of VISA and gets less points with Westpac (0.625/$ instead of 0.75/$).

I've got the ANZ black now, but will need to cancel soon to avoid annual fee. This looks like a goer!

      • Same boat

        • Same boat too. I needed a Visa or MasterCard, so went for the BankWest 50k sign on.

  • +1

It looks like you don't get the bonus points if they waive the fee.
Down the bottom of the webpage it says:
"More about the bonus points offer

…… In order to be eligible customers must have been charged the standard annual fee. ……"

Has anyone got any written confirmation about the waived fee & still getting the free bonus points?

    • +1

That's if you apply online. In branch it's waived and you will get the points.

      • -2

Sorry just to clarify… Definitely get the bonus points points? You looking in Westpac?

  • NAB card with 40000 free points and first yr waivered seems better for ppl with lower income

  • just applied a week ago and still waiting for the cards to arrive is there a cooling off period ? so i can cancel and re-apply without the fee ??

  • Already have 60,000 from St george and time to get another 60,000 from Westpac!!!

Saving up points for business class to Europe at end of year.

  • Also, Citibank Signature 'Veda' offer, fee free for life, is still available (search recent deal on OzB)

    • Is that with 60k Qantas points?

  • Can the associated poster please provide some guidance on credit scores. Will a 'good' credit score suffice, so long as you have sufficient assets, and not over committed?
Or will you need 'very good' or 'excellent'? I don't want to blow my chances applying for a high end card, if my chances of getting it are slim.

    • +1

He will unlikely have a clue unless if he's built the model.

I think big 4 banks are reasonably relaxed.

  • +1

Reowly, any news on when this offer ends?

I noticed in the comments others talked about 19 April 2015 but that seemed to be for the online application (which doesn't have the annual fee waived for the first year).

    • Its Friday 17th April.

  • +1

Just went in to a branch in Perth to enquire about getting the Black card. They advised that they aren't currently aware of any promotion to waive fees on the Black card. Anyone else had better luck?

    • Which branch?

edit: went to 109 SGT, they have never heard of it either. Might be eastern states only.

      • +1

Maybe go back tomorrow and get them to ring the East Perth branch which has accepted this deal.
(This may save me the job of going to 109 and not having any success as well! So thanks if you do!)

      • +1

        Went to 218 SGT.

I'm tempted to just apply by phone, save the potluck of going into branches to try and get this deal.

        • I went to the South Perth (Mends St) branch and the guy hadn't heard of the deal either. Was happy to waive the annual fee but didn't know about the points until I showed him this thread.

He was going to put through the application for me anyway, but his system got stuck on selecting the branch (apparently they did a system upgrade overnight).

At no point did I see him select which sign-up bonuses to give me - does this have to form part of the application?

      • I went back to 109 SGT this morning and now they have heard of it. Took ~20 mins.

  • Can someone clarify that the QFF points are 1:1.. Ie: Do the 60,000 bonus points offered directly translate to 60,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer point? Thanks!!

    • They are seperate reward programes. You either earn Altitude Points or QFF depending on the card you apply for.

      • +2

Based on point earning capacity, QFF is worth twice as much. Maybe other ozbargainer can confirm the real world value of each?

        If you choose Altitude Rewards:

1.25 points - Altitude Black World MasterCard ® (Australian Merchants)
3 points - Altitude Black World MasterCard ® (Overseas Merchants)
3 points - Altitude Black American Express Card (Australian Merchants and Overseas Merchants).

        If you choose Altitude Qantas:

0.625 points - Altitude Black World MasterCard ® (Australian Merchants)
1.5 points - Altitude Black World MasterCard ® (Overseas Merchants)
1.5 points - Altitude Black American Express Card (Australian Merchants and Overseas Merchants)

        • I'd say a qantas point is worth about 1.5 westpac points.

The problem with Qantas points is that to use them you need to pay the evil Qantas taxes.

          e.g. Flight BNE-SYD one way

          Qantas : 8000 points plus $35

Altitude via Velocity : 13800 points plus $20

So you'll get more 'free' flights with qantas points, but it will cost you more to do it.

        • @ProggerPete:

Except you won't accumulate many non-Qantas points from promotions, whereas you can easily rack up 100k+ points each year, through credit card signups like this. Which means you can buy business and first class tickets, for only two or three times the points required for economy, where it would cost 5 or 10 times the economy fares, if you paid for it normally.

        • Redeem for hotels and dodge the evil.

        • +1

          @ProggerPete:

I feel like it makes sense to apply for the Qantas card because 60k Qantas points is better than 60k Altitude points, and then change over to the Altitude Rewards card.

          Anyone got thoughts on this?
