  • Medibank vs BUPA, who's better in terms of costs and benefits?

    • would like to know this too

    • Better to go with a Members Own Health Fund.

Over the past five financial years, Members Own Health Funds have collectively given a higher percentage of premiums back to members in benefits than have Medibank, AHM, nib and Bupa combined. More of your premium dollar comes back to you in benefits. 1

    • Medibank vs BUPA, who's better in terms of costs and benefits?

Depends on how you use the benefits….

    • of course BUPA. medibank is top of the range brand, just like Sony vs LG

    • I'm currently with Bupa & parents are with Medibank.

In terms of claiming extras, Bupa is more of a hassle than Medibank.
Say for dental, if you want a check up, it must be 6 months apart, for podiatry I could not swipe my card in store as oppose to Medibank, which means I have to pay $500 then claim it back.

  • For those (like me) that didn't know - 2XU is another fitness store. So it's either a $400/$200 (depending on plan) Adidas Voucher or 2XU Voucher.

  • If i had it in me, I'd love to earn and churn on health/life insurance offers. Does anyone here actually go for this (i.e. sign up for the bonuses then stop your policy once you receive them?)

    • I'm with Medibank at the moment. I'd love to change to HBF for the GoPro, then back to Medibank for this offer. I doubt that's possible though. I can't be bothered checking the T&Cs, let alone actually doing it.

      • There's a free go pro deal?

        • Yes

        • @puffinfresh:

oh i found out it's only for WA members…

          "Prize details & conditions
          5. The promotion is open to new WA members only, who are not existing HBF health insurance members (Entrants).
          6. Prize: Each Entrant who takes out a new Hospital and Essentials combined policy will receive a GoPro Hero (model number CHDHA-301). This offer includes Overseas Visitor Cover products and new Corporate members."

$400 voucher with couples and families cover

Can you just get $400 off your premium instead?

    • +1

I am actually looking into this and the best offer they could give me was 6 weeks free, which works about to be about $360

  • +1

What is the minimum fee I need to pay in order to get the voucher then cancel?

    • good idea! grab and run. let me know if this is possible.
moving between provider generally easy and free, so yeah, why not take advantage

    • How do I get this offer?

Take out hospital and extras cover on or by June 30, 2015 and then:

Pay your first month premium and set up direct debit for future payments, OR
Pay for at least 6 months up front
Join online via Medibank.com.au to receive the exclusive e-book on Gluten

So it doesn't work out cheaper to buy then run

      • but you can always cancel right? Using the 14 day cooling off period perhaps or cancel midway and only pay for what you use?

        • but maybe there is hidden condition that will take away all bonuses if you cancel within 14 days, or they will only send you the vouchers after 3 months from joining date

  • they desperate to get back new customers, i have a lot of friends move out from medibank after they increase the premium every 3-4 months or so.

    • must agree with you on this, they bumped up my monthly premium by $90. they are expensive.

      • there your $1k gone in a year. who will be happy?

You don't see Medicare doing promotion rounds like this, this profit driven model of health cover is sickening. They're willing to spend millions on marketing moves like this but when it comes to claiming they make you jump through hoops to get a percentage; and then you have the exclusions. I can't see how private health cover can be any good (they don't even cover the remaining doctor's fee after the Medicare rebate stating a long list of exclusions).

    • Not a vaild reason for a neg. If you disapprove of how Medibank conduct their business then don't use them.

      • I thought a neg was allowed if it highlighted the practices of a supplier. This neg is to the whole industry but still highlight the supplier.

    • They're a business…. an insurance one at that…. of course its profit driven. All insurance companies are structured to make a dollar.

Costs me roughly $3k a year (family cover+extras), and about 2 yrs ago i required surgery costing nearly $21,000. Out of pocket from that amount to me was approx $1k and for the 5 days in hospital, had my own private room/bathroom and even had a medibank rep visit me to make sure everything was okay.

Granted medicare would have covered most of it, it would have been a shared ward and several months wait, no choice of doctor etc.

      • medicare covers 75% of in patient private hospital stay and the private insurer pays 25%.. the private insurer will charge an excess fee once a calender year for any admissions. If the treating doctor charges you more than what the medicare benfits pay for a procedure, then you have to pay a gap fee to the doctor. However, some doctors will participate in the private insurers no gap fee guarantee and you dont have to pay any gap

they are for profit business..you have a choice of sticking to medicare if the insurance business sickens you..

  • Anyone ever tried to bargain on renewal? I understand drumming up new business is always a focus, but i never see any real offers for existing members.

    • Tell them you're going to ditch them for someone else and see what they say?

  • Hmm… setup direct debit or pay 6 months in advance before you'll get the voucher.

    • You can always cancel the direct debit after you receive the voucher right?

      • Maybe, looks like you only need to set up DD and pay the first month.

        • +1

The devil is in the details, they don't say how long it is before you receive the voucher. May need to give them a call

  • Further discount available if they have partnered with your company - if they do, you should know already but you can check here
