      'NT' used to stand for New Technology. Starting with Windows 2000, "NT" was removed from the product name and is only included in the product version string.

      Even the current Windows is still based upon the code and kernel from the old Windows NT days, as opposed to the Windows 9x series (that was more of a DOS extension). Hence it is still a part of the NT family, just about 5 generations out from the last branded NT (v4.0)
      It's almost the same as MACOS being built on BSD UNIX technology that most people don't care about.
